Late French entry could force delay of 2030 Winter Olympics bid election; Commission chair stands down to avoid conflict of interest

Recommended Posts

Romanian International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Octavian Morariu stepped down as chair of the Future Host Commission for the Olympic Winter Games, the IOC announced Friday, to comply with conflict-of-interest rules set by the organization. That same set of rules could also upend the desired host city election schedule previously proposed by the IOC. Morariu’s […]

This is starting to become like a soap box. lol

Delaying even further 'til possibly summer 2025? That would give only 4-1/2 years for whoever the 2030 host would be. At that point, the only realistic contender to, more-or-less, comfortably take on such a short time-line would be SLC.

yeah theres no way it can be delayed that long.  France needs to get on this as of 2 months ago if they really want to be serious about this.  Italy 2026 set the standard of Late 11th hour bids, so it is possible, but that needs to be locked in at 2024 at the latest.

Nah.  You can't take a French entry for 2030 seriously.  Maybe for 2038; but it's too late and NOT the ooportune time for 2030.

The 2030 bid is just a dubious plot by Tony E to stay employed beyond summer 2024 of course :D

So strange that this adhoc new process actually stands in the way or clear and decisive dates of electing a host city.

Remember when the date of a decision was set in stone for years in advance?? lol

While I do have problems with many aspects of the “New Norm”, I do have to give it some credit in that the flexibility in making decisions at least is giving them options in dealing with the mess they’ve found themselves with the 2030 WOGs. It may well be that’s in the end they’re still forced to give it to SLC by default, but they are able to explore other options now, which would have been closed off to them previously.

So I dunno what to think here.  Trying to think like the IOC here, they probably letting Sweden stay in the driver's seat, and will let them stay there unless the Swedes vote down their bid.  Obviously theyre probably hoping Sweden seals that deal.

But does this also indicate that the IOC thinks France is a backup who can get their ducks in a row to get everything lined up in 4 1/2 years?  It sort of feels like the IOC believes France to be a bit of an insurance policy, as flimsy as that might be.
