Btw, how do you pronounce Zaragoza in spanish? Something like ZaragoHa?

The pronunciation would be something like "THaragoTHa" not "Saragossa". The THA would be be similar to the THA of THAnks (Z).

The new emblem of Jaca

Jaca will have a futuristic ice rink.

The city of Jaca will inaugurate a new, high-class ice rink at the time of the European Youth Olympic Festival of 2007.

The new pavilion was designed by the architectural team of Coll-Barreu and stands out due to its innovative, avant-garde, original and emblematic character. Coll-Barreu’s proposal won the Ideas Tender summoned by the Jaca 2007 Foundation and to which 17 prestigious firms in the country had been invited to participate. Five teams reached the final phase, all of which had an extensive trajectory in designing sports facilities although the winning preliminary plan obtained the unanimity from the judging panel.

The new building, that will cost about 20 million euros, is distinguished by its dome-shaped structure, which is formed by a membrane that alternates with an opaque, glass and steel surface. The creators have defined it as a ‘drop of water’ that evokes typical elements found in Pyrenees weather and which harmoniously integrates itself within the mountainous surroundings.

The façade drops out of sight and the roof flows to the ground. In order to avoid the abrupt reductions of the need for acclimatization, the dome displays greater transparencies towards the north and is more protected on the south side. The pavilion will have an ice surface of 2706, 22 square meters, divided into two tracks; one for competition with Olympic measurements and the other, smaller in size, for recreational and complementary uses.Indeed, this is yet another one of the most significant elements of the new pavilion. This new structure will be built next to the existing ice rink, which will be demolished after celebrating the European Youth Olympic Festival.

The old ice rink, inaugurated in 1972, marked the beginning of a new era in the urban-planning development of the city and in its direction as a tourist location. Its frantic activity in this time has turned Jaca into the indisputable ice sports centre of the country as well as a reference point for other locations. The new pavilion is born with the vocation to continue and to reinforce that work.

Yes, Zaragoza is going to change: the EXPO, the "new" airport with a new AVE station, the AVE station that alredy exists, the "New Romareda" which will be built sooner or later, the main streets are being remodelated for the EXPO, a "metro" will be constructed (la mayor parte del tiempo no irá bajo tierra), a teleferic will be constructed too in the EXPO area.

One of the big challenges is make the Ebro River (the most mighty of Spain) navigable, a big dam will be constructed for it.

Begins the installation of the arcs of the New Ice Ring's cover.

The cranes have begun to install the arcs that will support the structure of the cover of the new ice rink of Jaca. It is one of the most complex and spectacular phases of the works of the New Ice Rink of Jaca. A powerful crane has begun to elevate the arcs on which the oval cover of the new ice rink will lean.

It is predicted that all process will be finalized at the end of the month of July. Since then, the works of preparation of the interior of the pavilion will intensify. The beginning of the positioning of the arcs offers the true dimension of the spectacular building, that in its zenith will reach an altitude of 18 meters. The works advances according to the predicted rates and it will be given in the month of December, two months before the beginning of the European Youth Olympic Festival.

EXPO ZARAGOZA 2008 ("THaragoTHa" :D )

From 14th June to 14th September 2008 the first International Exposition, organised according to the recognised model of the International Exhibitions Bureau (B.I.E.) will be held in Zaragoza.

EXPO ZARAGOZA 2008 will be an international celebration of the dynamic relationship between water and human societies, in a global, effective and supportive project, created on the basis of an enduring concept: WATER AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

The chosen theme is of vital importance not only for present time but also for future

generations. Water is life, raw material; it is energy, a path linking peoples and regions, the germ of civilisation and source of culture. It is, above all, a symbol of universality.

This exposition is supported by solid principles and motives at international, national and local levels. They are indicators of the Spain’s development and stability, its consolidation as a world-class tourist destination and its experience in organising largescale events, such as the Olympic Games in Barcelona’92 or the Expo Sevilla’92.

Planned participation: between 70 and 90 countries, as well as international organisations, NGOs, companies, etc.

Over six million visitors planned.

The emblematic buldings:

EXPO ZARAGOZA 2008 presents an important innovation: content and container harmonise so that the site, its surroundings and the museographic programme become an active element of the theme.

The exposition structure, for which the organiser is responsible and which presents the development of the theme to the visitors, is organised into two categories: themed exhibitions and themed squares.

1)Bridge Pavilion

EXPO ZARAGOZA 2008 and the future city landmark. Constructed over the river Ebro, this pavilion bridge will be home to the themed exhibition WATER, A SCARCE RESOURCE and will contribute to joining both banks of the river. It is guaranteed to attract a high number of visitors as it is one of the gateways to the site.

proy%20ocho.jpg

2)Water Tower

Constructed on a base in the form of a drop of water, this building will become one of the symbols of the International Exposition; a singular pavilion dedicated to the theme of WATER FOR LIFE, pure fun, full of surprises and activities involving the spectator: vapour mazes, rainbows, storms, ice, sound and image and all kinds of sensations for the visitor’s entertainment.

proy%20cuatro.jpg

3)Rivers Aquarium.

This pavilion dedicated to WATERSCAPES proposes a natural trip round the great rivers of the planet: Ebro, Nile, St. Lawrence, Amazon, Mekong and Darwin.

It will be part of the amenities to be bequeathed to the city of Zaragoza when the International Exposition ends and will contribute to the development of tourism in the city.

proy%20cinco.jpg

4)Themed Squares.

Located between the pavilion bridge and the Spain pavilion, they aim to enrich and intensify the message of the vital link with water, from various perspectives. This provision of some of the essential messages of the EXPO will be very effective in communication terms, enabling more detailed treatment of specific aspects.

Six independent themed squares are planned, each with approximately 1,000 square metres of useful surface area for exhibition purposes

plazas-prueba.jpg

5)Institutional pavilions.

Spain Pavilion.

This will house the ‘WATER AND LANDSCAPES’ exhibition in Spain. The State Company for International Expositions (SEEI) is responsible for organising the pavilion content.

Aragon Pavilion.

With the theme ‘ARAGON, LANDSCAPE DIVERSITY’, the pavilion will reflect the marked influence of five different civilisations on the Region of Aragon in terms of water management over the last 2,000 years.

From this pavilion the EXPO ZARAGOZA 2008 message can be extended to the rest of the region.

proy%20seis.jpg

Participant country pavilions.

The participating countries will be grouped around the major ecogeographic regions of the world.

They are determined to a considerable degree by the natural conditions of water and by the more or less intense action of man.

The great ecogeographic regions represent the work of civilisations on the natural physical medium to create specific conditions for life and development of human communities.

1. AT THE LIMITS

1.1. - Ice and snow.

1.2. - Oasis.

1.3. - Highlands and mountains.

2. GRASSLANDS: SUN AND WIND

2.1. - Grasslands, steppes and savannahs.

3. UNDER THE RAIN

3.1. - Temperate forests.

3.2. - Tropical rainforests.

4. ON THE SHORE

4.1. - Great rivers and floodplains.

4.2. - Islands and coasts.

6)Metropolitan Water Park.

The International Exposition site is completed with the design of this new park, which covers 1,200,000 m2 and will provide a first-class green space for the city and the surroundings set in the Ranillas meander.

The environmental scale will range from more developed areas with an urban threshold at the Ranillas Avenue to more natural environments embodied by the wetland area, supported by ecological restoration, providing various habitats in all areas, based on the course of the river and with a central transitional area leading to the International Exposition site, and the urban area will be reserved for entertainment activities, amenities and services, where water will clearly predominate.
