You shouldn't rely too much on the color of the river here. It's always like that a few days after heavy rains (here those of the 26th) because upstream of Paris there are plenty of fields, agricultural land, along the Seine and its tributaries, so it's just that the the water carries some dirt (but which are not in the upper part of the river, they float in the lower part of the river with their weight). But in itself, it has no importance regarding a surplus of bacteria or anything else.

BBC commentator just now during the cycling leg...

"These crowds standing by the Arc de Triomphe have never seen anything like this before"

I'm fairly sure they have. I'm fairly sure France has hosted a few bike races over the past...121 years.

The current in the Seine this morning was also very very strong and the athletes battling away at times seemed to not be moving at all, just swimming on the spot

Around 315 m3/s for the women's race, 330 m3/s for the men's race.

Whatever was in the water clearly took a while to kick in for Hayden Wilde...

How do we think this triathlon course holds up with ones in the past in terms of beauty for the games? Is it on par or better than the likes of London, Rio, and Tokyo? All were beautiful in their own right

I think they're all very different.  The triathlon has typically been held near a very large body of water for the swimming portion (it has only been an Olympic sport since 2000).  This Paris triathlon is the first held in a river, and showcases the center of the city.

Sydney's triathlon was on Sydney Harbor; Beijing's was at a reservoir.  London's was by an artifical lake in a park.  All very different, and beautiful in their own right, as you said.

I like watching road cycling and the marathon to see what the Olympic host city looks like.  And yes, I'm aware that sometimes these events are not actually in the host city.  It's still fun to see what the areas look like.

LA's is going to be in the Rivers of America at Disneyland. That is clearly going to be the number 1 location all time cannot be beat.

I'm fine saying London's didn't really compare to the other two in this regard. We saw Hyde Park (which is lovely) and Buckingham Palace, I'm sure the helicopter shots were fantastic, but Paris really showed off the city at every turn and Rio's was on Copacabana!

London's was designed to be very spectator friendly with more laps than normal and the park space can be more easily controlled, and it was a pretty route. But Paris' and Rio's you can say were quite special.

Paris is a double or quits: yes the images are very beautiful but it was with the risk of seeing the triathlon "cancelled", we came close to having the biggest scandal of the Olympics in recent years.

I'm not sure it's worth trying such a bet again in the future. I mean, for Brisbane... do it at sea, there's nothing very sexy in the buildings around Brisbane River.

Got a feeling they will use Gold Coast as a venue for Triathlon ?

Where was Athens' (cause I don't remember)? That's the only one not mentioned.

It was on the Mediterranean, at a seaside suburb called Vouliagmeni.

And Tokyo's was In Tokyo Bay (Odaiba, a large artificial island).  It had views of the Ranbow Bridge.

The Athens 2004 Triathlon compeitions were held in and around the pristine waters of Vouliagmeni Beach on the outskirts of Athens.  It’s a beautiful sheltered bay with gorgeous views from the cliffs and winding road on one side.  I worked as team leader at the turning point for cycling and running on the cliffs above Vouliagmeni. Two magical days I’ll never forget.

They should've had a back up course ready to go. That's where the cockiness was. They lucked out, but I'm very happy they did.
