The German ambassador in France also took a swim :

Probably testing for the German team that has some serious medal hopes in the open water and triathlon events.

Yes this is turning into a PR nightmare for Paris organisers.

This closeup of the brown icky colour of the Seine water at the Triathlon starting area just in from ABC News Australia:

Arrogance.

They absolutely should've had a Plan B for this.

If it was looking 50/50 a month out (which it was from the test events) then you revert to Plan B or keep both options completely open. You don't say during the Games - "sorry triathletes, it rained a bit, guess you're screwed".

And the political line is easy too - "we've done a great job cleaning the Seine up to this point with our amazing Olympics acting as a catalyst to finally do this, and we will finish the job, but we couldn't do quite enough it in time for this triathlon which will instead be at xyz location"

There will be thunderstorms tonight in the Paris region. Unless a miracle happens, you can forget about plan A of the triathlon in the Seine. So we'll move on to a duathlon.

The worst part is that before the opening ceremony, the Seine had really become clean again; this is proof that it's the bad weather that's messing everything up. We can control a lot of things, but the weather is much more complicated.

oh my god it's happening the athletes are actually in the seine as we speak

Damn, just as I’m rewatching the opening (and actually enjoying it a LOT more than I did live). I’ll have to catch the replay after.

Omg, yes you’re right.  The water might be “safe” but it doesn’t look good.  Still an icky brown colour

it's raining too which is not exactly ideal if you want to keep the quality clean

The current in the Seine this morning was also very very strong and the athletes battling away at times seemed to not be moving at all, just swimming on the spot
