Alexjc Posted April 19, 2023 Report Posted April 19, 2023 The New Zealand Government as officially asked the New Zealand Olympic Committee to formally prepare plans to host a "Regional" spread Commonwealth Games in 2034. The bid has cross party support as the previous National government did eye up 2026 until they were removed from power in 2017. Labour looked at a potential hosting but the Pandemic derailed a study. Early banter has the event as a "Super Games" so to cover both islands and include sports that NZ does well in at the Olympics. https://t.co/5cfqXEywVg?ref_src=twsrc^tfw|twcamp^embeddedtimeline|twterm^screen-name%3ATheNZTeam|twcon^s1_c14 Quote

NZ has so many problems that they should be focussing on fixing and 11 years is not alot of time to sort the **** out. The NZ media are already jizzing all over this - declaring that they would host the best and biggest Commonwealth Games ever.... :S Quote
TorchbearerSydney Posted April 19, 2023 Report Posted April 19, 2023 Having a well planned Games can help focus cities on sorting stuff out..its a good goal for a nation like NZ to have. NZ can do this in their sleep with a 11 year lead in window! 2 Quote

To this day I still have no idea why Wellington deliberately broke its excellent transport network...But I believe the ultra-Left had a big part of it. As for the rest of the got it together regional cities...Hamilton has already tried to baggz the Rugby, Cricket and Rowing, it knows it has Cycling. Even way down South, the tourist region centres as well as Christchurch want a piece of the action. ...and out of the Right of the spectrum, an ACT MP suggested a bid for the 2035 RWC as well since facilities will be still in good nick. TorchbearerSydney Posted April 19, 2023 Report Posted April 19, 2023 Q: But I believe the ultra-Left had a big part of it. Thats hilarious- the Ultra left want free, state-supplied public transport for all. The Ultra right are the Oil and car companies that demand an end to public transport. You have things back to front. Quote
Victorian Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 If this NZ games will be a whole of NZ games they need to be careful of not just putting the majority of the events or all the marquee events on the North Island. It will need to be spread across all of NZ. They could have the Opening Ceremony at Eden Park, Auckland with the Closing Ceremony at the new Christchurch Stadium. NZ has the facilities for water sports like Canoeing, Sailing and Rowing plus they have been successful with these sports so the three of them could be considered to be included for 2034. The two biggest marquee events at any multi sport games are Swimming and Athletics. Same thing, one should be on the North Island with the other on the South Island. Link of a List of NZ potential venues : https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1xkLrlZTEajEBgw-cnXW3yt9QV89Utvo&usp=sharing As far as infrastructure is concerned, there are enough facilities across the whole of NZ that new stadium build requirements would be limited. The two things that would need attention is the athletics facility and an aquatics facility. The Aquatics facility needs to be build so it could be based anywhere. My suggestion is Christchurch. Athletics has several options (looking north island first) Trusts Arena, Auckland - There is room for expansion whether it is permanent or temporary grandstand structures. North Harbour Stadium - Could redevelop North Harbour Stadium to include an Athletics track. Sky Stadium - Put an athletics track into the stadium like what was proposed for the 2006 Commonwealth Games bid. Auckland Waterfront Stadium - A new Auckland waterfront stadium that has been thrown up in the past could Western Springs Stadium - A redeveloped Western Springs Stadium could host Athletics and then convert into a cricket ground post Games If Christchurch is an option, the new Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub Athletics Track could be Games ready with some grandstands built around the track. 1 Quote
Scotguy II Posted April 28, 2023 Report Posted April 28, 2023 So Eden Park, NZ national stadium is getting an upgrade, but no mention of timeframe and costs. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/sport/2023/04/eden-park-announces-retractable-roof-stand-upgrades-as-part-of-major-development-plan.html?cid=soc4%3Anewshubfb&fbclid=IwAR0uxoFQwgwTsuNHmXdL_OXfBsPauZJ2ZNHo2ShE1zP_eBkOYPUqj5B7Hd8 1 Quote

Also Wellington's "Cake Tin" is now at the end of it's current iteration and there are talks of reprofiling it's oval shape ground into a rectangle. NZ Cricket have already said they want to develop the Basin Reserve and put lights in there. The Cake Tin was designed to have a roof put on it as well. Quote
yoshi Posted April 29, 2023 Report Posted April 29, 2023 Oh don't you use the cake tin for cricket anymore? I guess if you're going to make it a rectangle, then between that and the current shape of Eden Park, the main stadium of any bid would have to be in Christchurch... would make most sense as the most blank canvas of a city, and would give it something to look forward to. Could it work as a South Island Games? Quote

Could it work as a South Island Games? Wellington's "Skycity" stadium (its current name) never really attracted large cricket crowds...Only for the 2017 CWC. Thank god NZ Cricket decided to keep the Basin Reserve as home base. The nearly let it go! The other problem was the big Rugby matches look like they were "too far away" from the people...and even the players said that. There were and still are plans to have pull in push out stands mounted on large tyred chassis that could be rolled back for cricket BUT the roof would be needed or the current canopies cover over a bit more. Athletics already has three venues to choose from BUT the kicker will be Swimming and Athletics go together, and you want them near each other. Quote

Scroll back up to see the athletic tracks. Also Mt Smart (the 1990 main stadium) is still capable of being refitted with it's track...also has its old warm up track that has already been refurbished. Currently NZ has no FINA competition standard swimming venues. It does have FINA standard pools dotted around the country. But will need to refurbish Auckland's aquatic centre to get it up to spec. Christchurch has to build an entirely new facility which they want near the new Te Kaha rugby/football Stadium. Wellington still doesn't know where to put their new pools. Athletics and Swimming are the two major and compulsory marquee events. You could split them up but at the moment Christchurch could take swimming as a facility built from scratch, like the old QEII Park was, is most desirable. It's early days and the NZOC has until the end of the year to tell the Govt how they are going to do it. Quote
