We need a new Category for the Euro Games . . .

As the 2023 Euro games are about to get underway, here are images of the Euro Games 2023 torch . . . kinda UGLY!

But here's an image. I think of the Euro 2019 cauldron in Minsk:  REALLLLLLLY CRASS and GAUDY!!

Do we even know who is broadcasting them?   Was a report last year that a deal had been done with the EBU which would see it get PSB coverage on the likes of the BBC, France TV etc. but there is no indication they'll be screening them and a subsequent report names MediaPro as striking a deal to be the host broadcaster and distribute the event.

Everything points out tomorrow's Opening Ceremony will be far more simple and less lavish than the last two editions. Seems it will mostly be focused in musical performances (DJ Tribbs, Krzysztof Cugowski,Roxie Węgiel) also starring Kalush (Ukraine).

Incredibly vile that I have an appointment right when the opening ceremony starts... hopefully I can find an upload once I'm free

This seems to be an absolute flop.   Looking at the schedule the games seem significantly scaled back this year and even though they have a deal with the EBU, which on paper gives it free to air coverage on the continents biggest PSBs, most aren't bothering to even show it.   The BBC hasn't even mentioned it's happening on it's website, never mind put any coverage on the iPlayer or TV, prioritising the grass court Wimbledon build up tournaments instead (and rightly so).

Live coverage is on europeangames.tv, which is an excellently set up service from Eurovision Sports with multiple live streams, content on demand and a really good schedule guide - it is much more user friendly than what Discovery+ put out for the Olypics and free to use with no sign up required.   Not sure if they have an app that you can view it on on Smart TVs though and there doesn't appear to be any YouTube streams this time.

Will the opening ceremony be on European games tv? I have a VPN app with different channels around the world and can’t find it on the tv guides anywhere

I thought the BBC was supposed to be doing this?! The European Championships last year got far more attention - maybe the EOC need to admit defeat on this one.

Edit: not even on iPlayer, is that official site the only place we Brits can watch?

No news though if the concept of the European Championships will continue. Athletics wanted to go back to doing its own thing, and has already awarded the 2026 EC to Birmingham. So that leaves a bundle of sports that may or may not trigger interest without athletics attached.

That said, European Games 2027 are also not yet allocated, so really maybe time to join forces.

I accept I'm biased but I'd have thought Brum would be a pretty much ideal place to host whichever one wins out. I hope one of them does, because we have proved that Europe can have its own games, I wouldn't want to see the idea due off. But we've also seen that if there's two, they're both diluted. It's time for a settlement between them, and that'd be an obvious next step for Birmingham too after 2022.

Clearly too much politics amongst the European Federations to get something off the ground which should have started years earlier - and have a Winter edition too.

Indeed not sure if it's officially linked to either the Games or the Championships but the inaugural European Para Championships, with 10 sports, take place in Rotterdam later this summer.
