Uhmmm, it already happened in Antwerp 1920.  One of the yachting races was held in Dutch waters -- so your debunking my Austro-Swiss bid has ACTUALLY been brought to fruition.  So, there is PRECEDENT.  And uhmmm?  Japan-Korea 2002? AUS-NZ Women's World Cup now happening?  UNITED 2026?  HELLO?

IOC isn't FIFA.

And I forgot another PERFECT, purposeful -- not incidental like 1920, example--the 1956 Summer Olympics.  Main body of sport in Melbourne but Equestrian events were in Sweden -- so that was the SECOND time an Olympic Games was split between two host countries and for the first time--on TWO different continents and opposing hemispheres no less.

Stockholm 1956 equestrian games program (Swedish, English and French)

Olympic Posters Through the Years Part 2: Equestrian Events Held in Stockholm, Not Melbourne ...

Also, the precedent that you're referring too: in 1920 there was one sailing event not held in Belgium but in the Netherlands because there were only two competitors and they were both Dutch. And hello, it was 1920 so very different times. 1956 was a necessity because Australia's quarantine rules would have made it impossible to get the horses there thus impossible to hold the equestrian events. The IOC thought it problematic that Salzburg's proposed sliding venue for 2018 was in Germany, even though it was just a couple of kilometres across the border

And as FYI has explained, it remains to be seen how well spread-out games will work. Let's see how well the logistical challenges posed by Milano-Cortina are handled.

It was the same IOC, though, who suggested PyeongChang use Japan’s bob run instead of building there own, and suggested to Milano they should consider using Stv Motitz’s run.

Different times - the IOC knows they have to promote more sustainability. I think it’s only a matter of time before a multi-country winter games happens.

Very interesting - have they got time for 2030? I assume they're envisaging basically one sport per host city, so nowhere needs to host anything more than the equivalent of a single World Championship which they've previously been fine with hosting before - clever. Swiss transport is good enough to make it work, plus they've got rather more existing contacts with the IOC than anyone else which can't hurt. If they're serious for 30 and get all the cantons they need we could have our new favourite.

Maybe it is nitpicking, but it's so frustrating that InsidetheGames uses that headline when the reality is almost the opposite; it is Swiss Olympic (association) trying to sell this idea to the people and government of Switzerland, not the government of Switzerland trying to sell this idea to the IOC.

Well, a headline’s role is to sell the story or get clicks, so it’s doing its job.

But it is a good point, we’ve had all these recent expressions of interest to fill the hole for 2030 now, but they’re al the NOC’s trying to push their agenda. Not one, to my knowledge, has actually passed the test of getting government backing (and before someone points it out, I’m not referring to SLC amongst them). Again, those NOC’s are also just doing their job, but it really is just still up in the air for all.

Side point: there‘s elections in Switzerland in autumn, and while it is usually a very consensual (almost-)all party government, I‘d be surprised if anything in official government support (other than that generic statement from the minister quoted) would be heard before the vote or soon after.

That's the problem with the news cycle these days that the IOC is so desperate for anyone to acknowledge their plea for a 2030 host that the slightest indication of interest will seem like more than it is.

Not the first time we've seen either a business interest exploring the idea or an NOC floating that headline to see what public reaction will be.  Sadly, it doesn't get us much closer to all those entities coming together to back a bid.

Sweden I trust could put something together for 2030 because they can pick up from where 2026 left off to make that happen.  Switzerland can't pull this one out of thin air to create this whole country-wide bid when it's something they have never planned and proposed before.  If they're looking at the future, the IOC I'm sure will be intrigued.  But I think they have to know that 2030 is too soon to make it work.

And to be fair Swiss Olympic itself mentions they are targeting either 2030, 2034 or 2038 (hence "Switzerland 203X").

At this stage, if the proper public and political backing was in place, I would say Sweden 2030 is more likely but it seems very difficult to evaluate the support or lack of for the project.

That makes it sound more like it's a plan for 2038, once whoever they get for 2030 then Salt Lake are out the way. Also a decade anniversary of both St Moritz Games.

A Swiss Games would be the first ONZIEME-LINGUAL   Games to happen, if it's in the cards: French, English, German, Italian, Romansch, Braille and FIVE sign languages (each one is different for each language)  Keep all those translators & interpreters in Geneva busy!!

OK I did not know that. Well that would have been a good idea; if Milano would have used St Moritz as a sliding venue, they might as well have dropped the entire Cortina part of the games and concentrated snow venues in Valtellina. But well. I'd still say that one venue in another country would be easier than spreading out the games completely across two countries.

Think the Swiss "bid" is like they're already here so the gifts and other things will be easy to deliver!

Sadly, those Swiss can never get together for credible Olympic bids.  There's too much rivalry between the various regionalistic cantons.

Public Support for Switzerland 2030

“Switzerland’s proposed bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games has received a massive boost after a new survey found that the 55 per cent of people polled supported the idea.“

This poll means nothing. It simply asks yes or no to hosting an Olympics. Rephrase the  question to "do you support government funding for hosting an Olympics and you likely get a different result as that's what the death knell has been for every recent Swiss bid. I like the idea of a country-wide bid as far as sustainability but that would require every canton to say yes. If one says no the bid is dead.

Wow, talk about using the entire country.  I know the emphasis there is that it's no new construction, but that's going to be an interesting logistical challenge where it's more than a 5 hour drive from 1 end of the country to the other.  Certainly helps that there is rail service connecting most of the country.

If they have the financial backing and the will to make it happen, more power to them.  Debatable if this is the new norm as a success or a failure that this bid only emerged after others dropped out of the conversation.

There's a couple red flags here. Once again  we have yet another poll that simply asks yes or no, not whether the public would support using taxpayer money to fund this, and it's already been mentioned that there will need to be investments in transport upgrades and that will have to come from the taxpayers along with security costs. Then you have the inevitable referendums that are likely to occur. Supporters have tried to counter that by saying if a canton says no then any Olympic venue can simply be moved. That's fine for the ski events but it's a little more complicated if Zurich says no (ice arenas) or St. Moritz (sliding)
