Sir Rols Posted February 22, 2023 Report Posted February 22, 2023 One of the co-conveners of this is a former prolific GamesBids member, MoRush. He’s been involved in urban development initiatives in Cape Town. Fantastic to see one of our own make the leap to real bid organisation and involvement. I think we’d all love to see this. The only trouble with considering Soputh Africa in the past has been the old issue that bedevils a lot of our Southern Hemisphere possibles - climate. Cape Town’s pretty cold in the IOC’s mandated games July-August window. It’s long been bought Durban is their best shot climate-wise (Durban also had the best games-ready main stadium already in place with the Moses Madhiba). But of course Durban did itself no favours by picking up the 2022 Commonwealth Games and then getting stripped of them when the Government refused to support them. It’ll be interesting and crucial to see how supportive the Government would be of a bigger Olympic bid. Anyway, I’d certainly want to wish Mo and his team the best of luck! Rooting for you. 2 Quote
Sir Rols Posted February 22, 2023 Report Posted February 22, 2023 Just realised Mo later became @Rafa Be great if he’d come in here at some stage for old time’s sake 1 Quote
Rob2012 Posted February 25, 2023 Report Posted February 25, 2023 Today's Formula E race (starts in two hours) is a nice opportunity for the city to show off its credentials. Looking sexy... Quote
Sir Rols Posted March 15, 2023 Report Posted March 15, 2023 And, with support from the sme team behind the 2040 working group… “South African student designers, enter the Caesarstone South Africa student design competition and design the Athlone Olympic Urban Sports Centre.” Details: Athlone Olympic Sport Centre Design Comp Quote
stryker Posted March 20, 2023 Report Posted March 20, 2023 I've raised the issue before and I'll bring it up again. How on earth could South Africa or any other African country for that matter, afford to host even under the rules set by Agenda 2020 and the New Norm. I look at Ghana which just had to postpone the All-African Games by a year because of financing and that event is nowhere near on the scale of an Olympics. The only way I could see South Africa pulling this off (and this is a big if) would be a country-wide bid (such as athletics in Durban). It would add to the logistical challenge but I cannot see how a single city like Cape Town, Durban, or other African cities like Cairo, Casablanca, or Dakar could construct all of the necessary venues, even temporary ones, and not blow up the budget or struggle to find uses for them post-Olympics. 1 Quote
Australian Kiwi Posted April 3, 2023 Report Posted April 3, 2023 Cape Town is too cold for the July-August window (as BS as that is, as a Melburnian) Its a cracking shame the 2022 Commonwealth Games fell apart . Had it been staged Durban might have been the city given the leg up to be front of the IOC's mind for Agenda 2020. It might have been a more forgiving decision to put 2032 in South Africa than a third Australian Olympics. 1 Quote
capetown2020 Posted March 25, 2024 Report Posted March 25, 2024 Very much here (Mo), and very kind words from Sir Rols, but this think tank is purely research. Who will I see in Paris? Would be amazing to meet up. 1 Quote

olympian Posted March 26, 2024 Report Posted March 26, 2024 this is a bid i can certainly get behind. but a lot of things needs to fall into place. but cape town definitely has that natural beauty that many will certainly envy. Quote
Roger87 Posted March 26, 2024 Report Posted March 26, 2024 First let's wait till the elections coming up May will bring some sense of stability. Then we can speak about this bid Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted April 8, 2024 Report Posted April 8, 2024 NOT GONNA happen. Why will they bid with a city with the wrong climate and NO Olympic stadium when there is one already built for and waiting for an Olympic Games in Durban? They'd be utterly stupid and show no fiscal responsibility at all if they went with Capetown. Photogenic vistas do not an Olympic host city make. Quote
