Proposed 2032 flat water rowing/canoe venue:  Rockhampton’s Fitzroy River

I think that there is a very real possibility that World Rowing, having done their technical assessments of the Fitzroy River course this year during the July/August Games period, will soon approve this venue for the 2032 Olympics.

World Rowing had to determine if at that that time of the year if across the rowing lanes if the currents in this particular river section gives an advantage or disadvantage to athletes rowing in the outside lanes versus the inside lanes.  Well that technical assessment of this dormant river course has now been completed.

Look at the ocean tidal movement in the flat water courses of two approved Olympic Games (Tokyo and Los Angeles) and we can see why the Queensland Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie is showing such stubborn bravado and confidence about the proposed 2032 Fitzroy River flat water river course.  This river course apparently doesn’t have a winter river currents problem during it’s dormant July/August winter period.

So, in comparison, hers’s a recap of two other recent World Rowing-approved Olympic venue assessments where ocean tides directly affected the Olympic flat water courses:

Tokyo 2020

Sea Forest Way”, Tokyo Bay

(circled in red)

  • sea water, tidal rowing course
  • the Sea Forest Waterway’s rowing competition and canoe course was newly  constructed in the canals between the Inner and Outer Central Breakwater Reclamation Areas of the Port of Tokyo
  • Tokyo Bay is obviously connected to the Pacific Ocean and its tidal movements
  • World Rowing did their technical assessment and determined that this tidal venue provided no advantage or disadvantage to any athlete no matter what lane they competed in.

  • this rowing course is directly connected to the Pacific Ocean
  • originally constructed for the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games
  • World Rowing did their technical assessment and determined that this tidal venue provided no advantage or disadvantage to any athlete no matter what lane they competed in.
