BMX Racing - Will be at the Anna Meares Velodrome as it has already been announced. Brisbane will also host the 2026 UCI BMX World Championships.

T20 Cricket - Plenty of options. Assuming the Brisbane 2032 continues with the format from LA 2028 of six teams per gender of two pools, SF and Medal matches, The Gabba and Carrara could host Finals with a golden opportunity to take the pool matches to North Queensland with terrific venues in Cairns (Cazaly's Stadium), Townsville (Riverway Stadium), and Mackay (GBR Arena). Allan Border Field in Albion (Brisbane) is another option as well. All of these venues have hosted International Cricket and out of all the states in Australia, Queensland probably has the most venues that are International Standard.

Sports Climbing - The new Ballymore Stadium redevelopment includes a Sports Climbing wall behind the grandstand however Games organisers may look for a temporary facility in the city somewhere. Not sure where though.

Surfing - A few options including Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast as well as the Sunshine Coast. I would like to see the Sunshine Coast get the gig for Surfing to boost their number of sports.

Skateboarding - Could skateboarding be held at the venue that hosts the BMX Freestyle?

Coastal Rowing - Plenty of options like Surfing however in the same way to the Sunshine Coast for Surfing, I would like to see the Sunshine Coast host Coastal Rowing to provide more events to the city.

@AustralianFan @Victorian

BMX Racing: Yes, it is already planned for the Chandler Olympic precinct.

T20 Cricket: The Gabba & Carrara with Alan Border field if needed. Will have to wait until after the review to see if they are still available.

I did read an article mentioning 6 teams for the LA games due to strict overall athlete numbers. I just don't see that that is enough for Brisbane but can live with that number. Maybe 8-10 is doable. The host nation automatically qualifies if they want to field a team sport. So, a guess of the six LA teams - UK (England, Scotland Ireland). India, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa. If the host nation fields a team maybe it goes to 8. The West Indies although a good T20 cricketing team is made up of a lot of islands. With 8 years to Brisbane, the West Indies may be able to field a side from one island and then go through some qualifying games.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) consists of 12 “full members” - Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe.

Sports Climbing:  & Skateboarding: I have no idea. Pop us probably. Let the experts work on that.

Surfing: They could choose any of the vast number of beaches on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Snapper Rocks is a regular on the WSL Championship Tour so likely the favorite but has limited spectator seating capacity.

Around the corner is Duranbah Beach with lots of room for temporary stands and the cliffs overlook the beach also being a good viewing area. The Snapper rocks event has moved to Duranbah on occasions due to SR small swell.

Coastal Rowing: Don't know much about it so had to look at a couple of you tube videos of the 2024 championships.  Not sure it is a great spectator sport but that's just my opinion. Quite a few locations to choose from.

Kirra and North Kirra on the Gold Coast would be my choice. Usually fairly calm at that time of the year.

Maybe the calmer section of Mooloolaba Beach towards the river end on the Sunshine Coast. The next beach to Alexander Headlands being used for marathon. race walk, road cycling and kiteboarding.

Aah yes thankyou @Victorian, just found the BMX Racing Track at Chandler Sports Precinct in the Project Validation Report:

Agree with your other venue suggestions too for T20 Cricket, Sports Climbing, Surfing and Coastal Rowing.

Skateboarding has it’s own purpose-built competition arena but it could be co-located next to the BMX Freestyle Arena ascit was at Paris 2024:

Here’s photos of these two venues at Paris 2024:

Thanks @Brisbane Boy, yes agree that Chandler Sports Precinct alreadyhosts the BMX Racing track, as I’d missed that before.

Also like your suggestions for T20 Cricket and the number of preliminary games looks like it will be restricted as you said, so much reduced numbers from the T20 World Cup.

Surfing at Snapper Rocks and Duranbah Beach sounds good, especially the latter with better placement of more spectator stands.

Coastal Rowing Malloolaba Beach would be good to have more events on the Sunshine Coast.

Love your idea @Victorian of playing T20 Cricket at Cairns, Mackay and Townsville.

You’re on a winner there. Some have suggested on skyscraoercity.com to share matches over to Adelaide and Perth too.  But this won’t work and so on your initiative I looked further into this North Queensland idea of your’s:

*****************

Olympic T20 Cricket:  6 Mens Teams and 6 Womens Teams proposed

While the schedule and structure has not yet been finalised for the sport’s debut at LA 2028 and likely continuance at Brisbane 2032, the ICC has proposed two Olympic T20 Cricket competitions between the top 6 world ranked Mens Teams and Womens Teams.  This is to stay within the total athlete quota.

So the Olympic tournament would be less than one third of the size of the T20 Cricket World Cup and so no need to play matches interstate.

Although the following will obviously change between now and 2032, as an example, here are the current ICC Top Six T20 Cricket World Rankings for Mens and Womens teams:

Mens

Womens

  1. India

  2. Australia

  3. England

  4. West Indies

  5. New Zealand

  6. South Africa

  1. Australia

  2. England

  3. India

  4. New Zealand

  5. South Africa

  6. West Indies

While initially I liked the idea of some T20 Cricket matches going to say Adelaide and Perth, it will be in the dead of a cold, wet winter in both of those cities at the time of the Brisbane Olympics - so not pleasant for players and spectators.

Better to keep it in warmer, drier North Queensland where the northern economies can be boosted and average July/August maximums and rainfall are:

Show off more of tropical North Queensland to the world and draw in spectators and tourists from all over the world.

CLARIFICATION OF HOW ADDITIONAL EVENTS CAN BE

ADDED TO THE BRISBANE 2032 OLYMPIC GAMES

INITIAL SPORTS PROGRAMME

The initial sports programme, which includes all sports for a specific edition of the Olympic Games, is determined by the IOC Session from among the sports governed by the International Federations (IFs) recognised by the IOC.

Only sports which comply with the Olympic Charter, the World Anti-Doping Code and the Olympic Movement Code on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competition are eligible to be in the programme.

ORGANISING COMMITTEE PROPOSE ADDITIONAL SPORTS

With the implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020, the process of establishing the Olympic programme changed to boost the popularity of the Olympic Games while ensuring that the numbers of athletes, and the cost and complexity of the Games remained manageable.

So this new process came into effect from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games onwards.

  1. International Sport Federations make their case to the Brisbane Organising Committee for their sport’s inclusion at the 2032 Olympic Games
  2. The Brisbane Organising Committee then considers all the proposals, consults with stakeholders and decides which additional events they wish to formally propose to the IOC Programme Commission be added to the 2032 Olympic Games
  3. The IOC Programme Commission then considers this proposal and makes recommendations to the IOC Executive Board
  4. As the event programme must be finalised no later than three years prior to the Brisbane 2032 Opening Ceremony, approval of any additional events must then be made by the IOC Executive Board by 23 July 2029.

IOC RECOGNISED INTERNATIONAL SPORT FEDERATIONS

So, for an additional event to be approved by the IOC Executive Board to be added to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, the International Sport Federation which runs that event must be recognised by the IOC.

As at today, the list of IOC Recognised international sport federations is:

Fire at the Gabba during the BBL

An electrical fire in a DJ booth it seems according to Fox Cricket. After at least two previous electrical incidents in recent years involving blackouts during live tv broadcasts, a total re-wiring of the Gabba will probably be needed.

The big questions I have with this design:  is it as good a concert venue as the multi-use Brisbane Arena?   Is it meant to be “instead of Brisbane Arena” as the big indoor concert venue that Brisbane/SEQ has long been waiting for?

This Mt Coot-tha Aquatic Centre design has permanent pools over which temporary flooring would need to be installed to convert it into a bigger capacity concert / events  venue.  Weight limitations would come with a temporary floor over the pools and so this venue is sudddenly thrn not as versatile with the variety of events it could host.

The design itself looks good and I don’t mind at all that it’s up on scenic Mt Coot-tha, a bit like Barcelona 1992’s scenic Olympic Diving Pool up on Montjuic.

But I wouldn’t want Brisbane to lose the Brisbane Live multi-use concert and events venue.

Thanks for posting that seeing as it is the actual proposal to the 100-day review.

This idea was put forward some time ago, but this proposal has more detail now.

It looks good on paper with some nice images.

Don't think it get up as a lot of new roadworks, roundabouts and bridges involved.

This would most likely come out of other infostructure costs and not be included in the venue construction costs.

If it is intended as a replacement for Brisbane Arena/Live venue no way it gets built.

Even as a stand-alone pool complex i don't see that happening either.

Yes I agree with you.

It’s interesting too that this is the second design put in which includes National Aquatics Centre as the HQ for Swimming Australia.

The Arcadis Plan for Victoria Park also featured a National Aquatic Centre and a separate swimming venue for competition

Something’s up here and I smell a rat.  So in quick succession two independent architect groups have submitted dfferent designs which feature a national HQ for Swimming Australia.

We need a competition venue for swimming and water polo finals, not be favouring just one Olympic sport over the others in building a national centre for thst sport only.

None of my business but I must say ever since that idea of putting a roof on Suncorp & using it for swimming came up, I think anything else would be a letdown. Imagine La Defence but bigger & full of Aussie swimming fans. Useful legacy too in a city famous for rain...

Yes it would be an impressive swimming venue.   I guess we’ll have to see if the 100-Day Review has anything to say about it.

When the idea came up, puttng a roof on Suncorp Stadium was not mentioned but, as you said, it would be highly desirable to have one.    I’m hoping that funding to put a roof on Suncorp Stadium can be found and that a submission was actually sent in to the 100-Day Review team.

Whilst Mount Coot-tha may be a stunning location with spectacular views of the city, I have strong doubts this facility would work due to the impact on the heritage area, lack of transport and grandstand seating only on one side of the pool (once you take out the room for media, there will be limited seating capacity for spectators.

My preference would be for a glass roof installed over Suncorp Stadium and for Suncorp to host the swimming following in the footsteps of Paris La Defense Arena and Sofi Stadium or a temporary sail like Kazan World Championships.

Great idea. In the sunny state of Queensland, a transparent roof pver Suncorp Stadium would be ideal.  Hopefully a funding source can be found if the Government decides to go with a roofed Suncorp Olympic Swimming Stadium.

I think we need to have a reality check on Brisbane 2032.

Brisbane should not be compared to recent mega cities LA, Paris, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Beijing. We will not be getting anywhere near the crowd numbers those cities got or will get in the case of LA. Okay we will get more than Tokyo did.

Brisbane is the start of the new norm although Paris & LA have provided some of what the IOC wants in the future.

We don't need a 50k crowd for swimming at Suncorp as they can get the same number for the planned football games.

Remember at present Lang Park (Suncorp) is also down for opening and closing ceremonies.

I sincerely hope that gets changed and a new stadium is recommended by the 100-day review Authority.

Where do you move football, to accommodate swimming taking over that venue. There is nowhere else with that capacity.

Even if the Government finally approves a new 60k stadium for athletics and opening closing ceremonies football won't be played there.

Swimming stays at the Brisbane Arena as planned even though i don't really believe we need Brisbane Arena at all.

My thoughts won't matter as the Brisbane Arena Entertainment Centre is set to be built somewhere.

I would prefer it gets moved to the Cross River Rail site when construction is completed there.

I would use Brisbane Arena for Basketball during the Olympics not swimming.

Swimming to the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre as the permanent legacy base for swimming.

A roof is planned, so maybe spend some extra money on an enclosed roof. The Gold Coast City Council will chip in $75 million which no other Local Government Authority has offered to do. 10k capacity which is enough in my opinion.

The world will just be looking at the swimmers.  It will have capacity crowds in a smaller environment so the atmosphere will be great and that will come out through the telecast.

Ipswich Stadium locally known as BHA or Brighton Homes Arena.

This is the training ground of my beloved Brisbane Lions Australian Football League (AFL).

It also is the home venue for the Brisbane Lions Womans Australian Football League (AFLW).

For any overseas people looking at this, AFL is not Soccer (football), Rugby League or Rugby Union.

My Brisbane Lions team played in the last 2 Grand Finals.  Lost in 2023 but won in 2024.

In Australia the Grand Final is the ultimate prize for the season.

The AFL Grand Final is always played at the MCG in Melbourne (excluding the covid years).

Capacity is 100,024 with 95,000 seated and 5,024 standing room.

In 2023 there was a capacity crowd, but we fell short by 11 people in 2024 with only 100,013.

I attended both grand Finals. A bit sad the first one but made up for that the following year.

We lost by 4 points in 2023. Brisbane Lions were underdogs again in 2024 but thrashed Sydney by 60 points.

A brief look at AFL (link below) in the 7-minute highlight from the 2023 Grand final for those overseas that know nothing about the game. Brisbane Lions are in Maroon with gold Lion on front.

Now back to the Ipswich Stadium.

The clubhouse can be seen in the background and can be used for the athletes, some VIP seating on level 1.

It has a bar fronting the ground and a cafe.

The Brisbane Lions own 50% of Total Fusion a health and fitness franchise.

It is just out of site in the bottom left of the image and is part of Ipswich Stadium.

The white building behind the clubhouse is a large warm up and gym area for athletes (AFL at present).

Indoor recovery pool and spa at Brighton Home Arena.

An aerial view of a gym at Brighton Home Arena.

A wide angle view of an indoor field at Brighton Home Arena.

Quite a few offices that may be able to be used too.

There is a small 600 seat grandstand on the right of the image. They broadcast the AFLW on channel 7 from the purpose-built media area that goes the length of that grandstand.

The remaining seating is just 3-tiered concrete seating with grass in between around the ground. No shade.

There is a grass hill area out of site behind the bottom goals. Goes in a semicircle shape and seats quite a few people.

They will need to erect temporary stands around the ground where possible.

The Rail Station is only 500 meters from the venue. But it is a terminus station being the last on that line.

You can see the rail station in the background. The white long structure top of image to the right of the light tower

Yes they’ll erect temporary grandstands for ticketed Games spectators.  Likely a temporary pool off to the side for the 200m freestyle discipline, as Paris 2024 did.

As you said, the Brisbane Lions facilitites will no doubt be used by athletes and officials.  Great train station access for the public get to Ispswich Stadium too as mentioned.
