New Gold Coast Arena
Interesting, the City of Gold Coast Council are planning for a $480m 12,000 seat indoor arena of it’s own at Southport’s Carey Park.

All Olympic/Paralympic venues on the Gold Coast have been allocated so not sure what events they have in mind for it.

The Stadium Business.com are suggesting:

“The venue could host some of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games sports and culture events, as well as international and national music acts, major sporting events and family entertainment.”

Additional Sports for Brisbane 2032

LA2028 recently had six additional sports added to it’s sports program. Brisbane's 2032 can also expect to have  additional sports  added although not necessarily the same extra ones that LA just got.

So the planned 12,000 seat Gold Coast Arena may come in very handy indeed for additional indoor competition/s.

Outdoor sports considered likely to be added to Brisbane 2032’s program are T20 Cricket and Surfing.

perhaps for a potential inclusion of netball, isn't that a popular sport in the Commonwealth and in Australia?

Yes absolutely, Netball is very popular here and you’re right, I think it would be a top contender to be added to Brisbane 2032.  A perfect home for it would be Gold Coast Arena.

I'd give netball a 75% chance for 2032. Cricket will 100% be there which is why i support a new stadium at vic park - could potenally use the new stadium for track and field and ceremonies and use the gabba for cricket, than tear down the gabba once the games are over

Yes, it may last only one Olympic Games, but hopefully longer. The new Gold Coast Arena would be a perfect modern venue for Netball preliminaries and finals to be played at.

From Netball Australia.

“With the support of World Netball, Netball Australia has declared its intent to have Netball played at the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.”

“Netball has been a Commonwealth Games sport since 1998 and the work starts now to see it included in Brisbane.”

“Netball Australia CEO Kelly Ryan said netball deserved to compete under the five famous rings.

ADDITIONAL SPORTS

vying for inclusion at Brisbane 2032

Wow. This has been revealing and surprising as to the sheer number of sports who are pushing for inclusion at Brisbane 2032.

Ok so the IOC has stressed new sports must be sustainable, inclusive, urban, youth-oriented, spectacular and gender-equal, while not requiring new, permanent infrastructure.

The IOC’s Olympic Programme Commission will decide which additional sports are in and out for 2032 and they will not officially begin considering these any earlier than 2026, according to this report: ABC News Australia.

A sport is usually not considered a "core" part of the Olympic program until it is part of at least three consecutive Games.

So here’s what appears to be the full list, warts and all, of those sports wanting to get into the 2032 Brisbane Games.

Some of these sports have been marked as either ‘favourite’,  ‘maybe’ or ‘long shot’, according to Victoria University, while those in italics are personal guesses:

AFL FOOTY 9s     (long shot)

  • AFL Footy 9s is similar to Rugby 7s in that an immediate connection is made to the sport, with added reference to the number of players on the field: AFL International.com
  • it’s is a real long shot for Brisbane 2032, as too few countries play this sport and the host nation would dominate

BREAKDANCING                   (long shot)

  • despite the Paris 2024  controversy, it remains a popular youth-friendly sport
  • breakdancing’s surprising exclusion from LA2028 ocurred prior to the Paris 2024 Games
  • USA Today.com

CRICKET                        (favourite)

  • Olympic cricket could be coming down under in 2032 after the sport was proposed for inclusion at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
  • The sport has been proposed for inclusion at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, which if accepted would make it a shoo-in for Brisbane 2032.
  • Cricket.com.au

E-SPORTS               (maybe)

  • competitve video gaming has experienced explosive growth worldwide in recent years.
  • the IOC has recently announced a new standalone Olympic E-sports Games, which could possibly lead to it making an appearance in the mainstream games: Victoria University.

FLAG FOOTBALL                   (maybe)

  • will be under consideration by the IOC for inclusion at Brisbane 2032 due to it’s debut at LA 2028.
  • ”Australians are born for this game”: The Guardian

FLYING DISC                   (long shot?)

  • In April 2024, the Organising Committee of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games met with a delegation from the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), led by its President Robert "Nob" Rauch, and the Australian Flying Disc Association (AFDA), where the sport was presented for inclusion in the Olympic programme.
  • Inside The Games 5 April-24

KARATE  and KICKBOXING            (long shot)

  • both sports put in bids for the LA 2028 games and were not successful. They are not likely to be included at Brisbane 2032 as they appear to have limited widespread support among the large IOC membership:   Victoria University

LACROSSE                (favourite)

  • this sport has been officially added to the LA2028 and is favourite to continue at Brisbane 2032
  • SVG Europe.org
  • this is a sport in which Australia is again expected to do well. As it will be played in a modified six-person format (similar to rugby 7s) and using a shot clock, nations traditionally not strong in the current version of this sport – with its bigger field and larger number of players – may begin to take an interest and support its inclusion: Victoria University

MOTORSPORTS                (long shot)

  • put in a bid for the LA 2028 games and were not successful.  It’s not likely to be included in the Brisbane games, as it appears to have limited widespread support among the large IOC membership: Victoria University

NETBALL                  (maybe)

  • World Netball declares its intention to work with Netball Australia to make a compelling case for Netball’s inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
  • World Netball will also further develop and promote it’s modified Fast5 fornat of the sport which features 5 players a side, dynamic rule changes, shorter quarters, power plays and supershots.

PICKELBALL               (long shot)

  • Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.
  • Players use paddles to hit a perforated, hollow plastic ball over a 34-inch-high net. You can play singles or doubles, and the game is played to 11 points, with a team needing to win by two points.
  • There's hope for pickleball in the Olympics someday soon”: Pickelball.com

RUGBY LEAGUE 9s           (maybe?)

  • Rugby League could feature at the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, with discussions having already been held between the NRL and the former Queensland Government about the inclusion of the code’s Nines and wheelchair formats.

SKATEBOARDING                 (favourite)

  • made it’s debut at Tokyo 2020, continued at Paris 2024 and its continuance at Brisbane 2032 looks likely

  • “We are already talking with Brisbane 2032”:  Francs Jeux.com

SURFING                     (favourite)

  • made it’s debut at Tokyo 2020, continued at Paris 2024 and its continuance at Brisbane 2032 looks likely
  • Gold Coast’s rolling surf would be favourite to host this competition
  • Victoria University

SURF LIFESAVING                 (long shot)

TRAIL RUNNING                 (long shot)

  • Trail running is a sport that involves running  on unpaved surfaces in natural environments, such as forests, fields, mountains or beaches.running is a sport that involves running on unpaved surfaces in natural environments, such as forests, fields, mountains, or beaches,
  • The Trail Running 2032 Campaign and its ‘pillars’, which have been designed to present trail running as an Olympic and Paralympic sport on the world stage: Trail Running.org.au

The question now would be where would the existing or temporary venues be for at least those listed as favourites or maybe ?

Lacrosse Queensland seem to use the fields of St Lucia campus of University of Queensland and the Mt Gravatt campus of Griffith University a lot for their competitions. Perhaps this is a pointer to potential venues for Brisbane 2032 with temporary grandstands?

As it turns out with the Mt Gravatt campus closing, a better option for Lacrosse at Brisbane 2032, would be Keith Hunt Park on the Gold Coast which was the hockey venue at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.   Temporary grandstands and other overlay.

What is Flag Football?
As in American football, the aim of flag football is to advance up the field via a series of offensive plays into the opposition’s defensive endzone.

It is a non-contact sport with 'tackles' made by removing one of two vinyl 'flags' attached to the ball-carrier’s waist - one on each side.

  • Play starts at a team’s own five-yard line with the centre snapping the ball back to the quarterback who either passes the ball forward to try and find a receiver, or hands off to a running back.
  • The play is over when either a flag is removed, the ball-carrier goes out of bounds, or a forward pass hits the ground.
  • Each team has four attempts - known as downs - to reach the halfway line. If successful, they have another four downs to reach the endzone and score a touchdown. If unsuccessful on either count, the ball is turned over to the opposition who start on their own five-yard line.
  • Turnovers also occur due to interceptions - when a defender catches a ball intended for a receiver - and fumbles, when the ball-carrier drops the ball and a defender collects.
  • In flag football, no running plays are permitted when the offensive team is five yards or less from the endzone.
  • After a touchdown, which is worth six points, teams go for an extra point - by running or passing - from the five-yard line, or two extra points from the 10-yard line.
  • A Flag Football match consists of two 20-minute halves with the clock running continuously in each until the two-minute warning.
  • After the two-minute warning, the clock stops every time there is a stoppage, ie. when the ball-carrier goes out of bounds, a forward pass goes to ground or there is a turnover or a score.
  • A flag football field measures 70 x 25 yards (45.7m x 22.86m) including 10 yards (9.1m) allotted to each of the two endzones.

Now they’re permanent Olympic sports, Brisbane has plenty of options to stage these.

SURFING

Likely to be either on the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast to be near their Athletes Villages.  Will be spectacular television images beamed around the world of the rolling surf at whatever beach they choose for Olympic Surfing.

SKATEBOARDING

The skateboarding can be easily assembled in any open space flat space. At Paris 2024, they set up the temporary, prefabricated Olympic Skateboard Park and temporary grandstands at Place de la Concorde and then quickly removed it for the Paralympics Opening Ceremony.

i would think the Goldie would get this. could do it at surfers' paradise - have grandstands set up on the beach, similar to the setup used for schoolies

I think it’s wishful thinking on the part of the Gold Coast to snaffle some events off the Sunshine Coast. I think the Sunshine Coast Stadium upgrades will proceed.

See this ABC News Australia report:

Gold Coast poised to poach Olympic events from Sunshine Coast amid Stadiums delay

qFNJY4Q.jpg

g5fhJNj.jpg

The Gold Coast is poised to poach more Olympic events if cost blowouts plaguing the Sunshine Coast's stadiums force a venue rethink.

The Sunshine Coast was promised a major upgrade to its outdoor stadium and a new indoor sports centre to host soccer and basketball during the 2032 Olympic Games.

The venues would also address a chronic shortage of community sporting facilities in a region with an exploding population.

However, the new Queensland government recently revealed costs for the two stadiums had jumped from $290 million to $410 million.

The outdoor stadium upgrade would increase capacity from 1,046 seats to 10,000 permanent seats plus another 10,000 temporary seats during the Olympics.

The new indoor centre would deliver 11 courts, seat 6,000 spectators, and be used to host major futsal and basketball championships from 2027.

City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said his region was keen to host more events if the Sunshine Coast could not, but warned time was ticking.

"We've already got facilities here … we're more than happy to accommodate [more events]," he said.

2032 Olympic Training Venue:  Bentleigh Aquatic Centre Upgrade

The $23.1m legacy upgrade of the Bentleigh Aquatic Centre in Brisbane’s City of Logan will also provide yet another quality training venue for the world’s swimming teams when they descend on Brisbane in 8 years time:

tTIjcbz.jpg

Swimmers with eyes set on Olympic glory can soon build their skills in Beenleigh with construction of an Olympic-sized pool now in progress.

The $23.1 million upgrade of Beenleigh Aquatic Centre will see the creation of Logan’s second Olympic-sized pool.

The 50-metre, eight-lane swimming pool is expected to open mid-2025 and replace the outdated pool that occupied the space since 1964.

The existing pool was so old that it was marked with imperial measurements, coming out at thirty-three-yards long.
