Will go though the 100 day review but Gabba rebuild looming as preferred option

Bulldoze a park or a school?

As Michael Jordan once said

I agree.  A Gabba Rebuild may be back on.

one of three things will happen.

1 – the Gabba will be torn down and rebuilt and Crisafulli will use weasel words to the effect of "there was no net increase in stadium numbers" or,

2 – the independent review will (once again) recommend Vic Park and demo of the Gabba, once again there is no net change in Stadums. or,

3 – a new stadium at vic park will be built and the gabba kept for 2032 cricket. Crisafulli will point to the independent consultants and say "its out of my hands"

I have been away in the lead up to the election as anything to do with the stadium would depend on who won. now we have (arguably the best winner for the Olympics) i think things will start going full steam ahead and i'm keeping my eyes open for the rings as i go about my day

Yes agree with your assessment of where things are in the wake of the change of government in Queensland.

I also wonder what the new Premier might have up his sleeve regarding a private investment consortium which uses more private funding than public ?

If no more Olympic federal funding coming, was thinking if Crisafulli has up his sleeve a private/public contribution proposal for construction of a Victoria Park Stadium and warmup track only but retain control of Victoria Park and it’s use in the state government’s hands?

i suspect more federal funding will come.

maybe not before the federal election (due by May) due to Queensland being a key state (especially for Labor) and the perception in regional Queensland that money is funneled to the southeast corner but i suspect the olympics will be put on the infrastructure Australia priority list.

its all a moot point until march when the new premiers independent committee hands down the report. at least the horrid QSAC plan is dead and buried however

I hope so but then the Australian Government have a significant contribution to a number of Olympic projects.  They may insist Brisbane 2032 stays within the agreed funding envelope in the existing signed Agreement between the Australian and Queensland Governments on Olympic infrastructure projects, or as I hope, an increase in federal funding?

The new independent Olympic infrastructure review must consider Victoria Park, the lord mayor said as Queensland’s new premier confirmed the Brisbane 2032 stadium debate would be finally put to rest in about four months’ time.

Premier David Crisafulli said the clock would start ticking on his promised 100-day review sometime next month, when the board of the independent Olympic infrastructure delivery authority was constituted.

“That’s a lot of work to do in a short period of time, but it’s important that we put a road map forward, and within that 100 days, you’re going to get something that Queenslanders are proud of,” he said.

That review should consider all options, including Victoria Park, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner told the regular Brisbane City Council meeting on Tuesday.

I thought the independent Brisbane 2032 GVLDA - Games Venue and Legacy Delivery Authority  had already been established already through an Act of Parliament earlier this year and began operations in July with an interim CEO?

By the sounds of it, the seven independent board members have not yet been appointed.

Victoria Park is the best option hands down and i suspect the review will find this too.

if we go Vic Park, we can keep the Gabba operating and shift AFL & Cricket there seamlessly  - and potentially even keep the Gabba for 2032 Cricket.

The Gabba is space constrained on 3 sides - one by East Brisbane state school and Vulture and Stanley Streets on 2 other sides. The Stadium already overhangs both streets example here on the Stanley Street side

a full tear down and rebuild would cripple both streets for a long period of time and both are commuter throughfares.

even with the cross-river rail station opening opposite the stadium, it's still a nightmare both as a driver and as a stadium attender - its space constrained outside the stadium too, and when there is a full house (i went to the Lions v Carlton game that was sold out) it was a nightmare inside - long waits for food and drink. in contrast i was in Perth at Optus Stadum for the WWE in Feb where they had 55,000 and it didn't feel like it. lines for entry, food & drink and toilets were quick and  efficient.

The Lions first finals which was their only home finals match at the Gabba showed the need for a new stadium in Brisbane. The Gabba is outdated and old

Emma Thomas is the Interim CEO of the Games Venue and Legacy Delivery Authority and commenced in her role on 1 July this year.

Advertisement for up to seven independent board directors will soon commence, to be selected by CEOs of the nine Games Delivery Partners.”

“The board will then appoint a permanent CEO.”

Whether the new Crisafulli Government accepts this Interim CEO appointment or not remains to be seen.

So the 9 Games delivery partners whose CEOs will select the 9 GVLDA Board of Directors are:

  1. The Queensland Government,
  2. the Australian Government,
  3. the Brisbane City Council,
  4. the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee,
  5. the Sunshine Coast Council,
  6. the City of Gold Coast,
  7. the Australian Olympic Committee,
  8. Paralympics Australia,
  9. Council of Mayors (SEQ) Pty Ltd.

Does anyone have any updates on this?

Greens councillor claims LNP ‘cabal’ plotting to build Victoria Park stadium

Cameron Atfield

A Greens councillor has sensationally accused an LNP “cabal” of conspiring to build a stadium at Victoria Park, after Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner insisted this week it must form part of the Crisafulli government’s 100-day Olympic venue review.

Paddington councillor Seal Chong Wah, who won the ward from the LNP at the March council election, said the wheels were set in motion when former LNP lord mayor Graham Quirk delivered his review of Olympic venues in March.

Chong Wah said the Schrinner administration could not, on one hand, promote the transformation of  Victoria Park to Brisbane’s “Central Park” while also saying it was a “compelling” site for a new oval stadium.

“Those two things are completely incompatible,” she said.

“The LNP mayor’s active promotion of Victoria Park as an Olympic venue of course started with a review by former LNP mayor Graham Quirk.

“There is increasing evidence that the LNP are not being transparent or honest with the people of Brisbane.

Proposed site for new Olympic stadium Proposed site for new Olympic stadium

Graham Quirk has confirmed to this masthead this was the site identified in his Olympic venue review.

“It is highly likely that an LNP cabal – including the former LNP mayor, current LNP mayor and key decision-makers in the new LNP state government – are already planning a new Olympic stadium in Victoria Park.”

Then-Labor premier Steven Miles appointed Quirk to conduct the 60-day review after the cost of the Gabba rebuild blew out from $1 billion to $2.7 billion.

Asked to respond to Chong Wah’s accusation, a spokeswoman for Schrinner said the lord mayor was “not commenting on Greens conspiracy theories”. Quirk also declined to comment.

Comment was sought from Premier David Crisafulli, who said this week his promised 100-day venue review would begin next month.

Chong Wah noted that the first stage of the $120 million Victoria Park/Barrambin parkland project showed a “gaping huge hole … big enough for an Olympic stadium”.

“Schrinner campaigned on the renewal of Victoria Park for two years ahead of the last council elections,” she said.

“Clearly, this was an election-focused greenwash.”

At Tuesday’s council meeting, Schrinner insisted the review explore all options, before he promptly rejected two of the four serious proposals – the Gabba and the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre.

Labor council opposition leader Jared Cassidy said Schrinner was “trying to have a bob each way”.

“It’s very strange of the lord mayor to get up and say in one breath ‘I will not rule anything out’ and then rule out the Gabba and QSAC as Olympic stadiums,” he said.

“When will Adrian Schrinner make a decision about what he wants for Brisbane 2032? He will wait for everyone to do the hard work and then do a Steven Bradbury at the end to claim the win.”

To build Victoria Park, Crisafulli would have to break a pre-election pledge that no new stadium would be built.

Speaking on 4BC this week, former Howard government minister Gary Hardgrave said: “I think [Crisafulli’s] got to break a few promises and get on with a few things that need to be done.”

Victoria Park is my first choice. If this is unable to be achieved then I am happy to settle for a Gabba redevelopment like was first proposed

Posting this to add to the discussion only because the backers of a Hamilton Stadium have renewed their push for it.

I’m not expecting it to happen but I don’t mind it if the government approves this and funds the Doomben rail extension to Hamilton, stranger things have happened:

Interesting, the City of Gold Coast Council are planning for a $480m 12,000 seat indoor arena of it’s own at Southport’s Carey Park.

All Olympic/Paralympic venues on the Gold Coast have been allocated so not sure what events they have in mind for it.

This is becoming a joke, is there any point in this so-called 100 day review now?

Victoria Park appears to have been ruled out as the site of a new Olympic stadium before the terms of reference have been finalised for a 100-day review of Games venues.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie today dismissed the Herston option, days after Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner called for all sites to be considered and reconsidered as part of the LNP government’s independent review.

It is news when you've been droning on for years about the New Norm being an antidote to bloated Games organisation, and Brisbane 2032 being the poster child for change. Its turning out to be a prime example of disorganisational paralysis due to there being too many cooks in the kitchen. It also has a tap of funding (the feds) that most other Olympic cities do not have access to. Its already shaping up to be more expensive than 2000 (inflation considered) and Sydney built an entirely new Olympic Park.
