Australian Kiwi Posted July 23, 2024 Report Posted July 23, 2024 I opened the article expecting to see a colour rendering - I actually thought that picture was from Amsterdam 1928 (although we could only hope - that is a beautiful Art Deco stadium that has been a legacy to that city for nearly a century). FYI Posted July 23, 2024 Report Posted July 23, 2024 Quote Wow, that really is no frills AKA: the Aldi Olympics. Quote Yikes Is that final & settled or an attempt to get things moving on Victor Park That's what I said, hence the black & white 1928 'vibe-ish' imagery. Seems that was intentional to get that point across. Quote

Seems that was intentional to get that point across. That might indeed be what the newspaper intended, in fact also certainly since they published such a sh!tty render. But the pic itself was obtained under a Freedom of Information application, which apparently always, in Qld anyway, supply results in b/w photocopy. Whichever department supplied it also quickly came out with a statement after that this wasn’t a final design. Edited July 23, 2024 by Sir Rols Quote
ejaycat Posted July 23, 2024 Report Posted July 23, 2024 14 hours ago, Sir Rols said: Apparently so. Yeah, it’s an unfortunate pic/render seeing as it’s black and white and photocopied - really emphasises the Amsterdam 1928 vibes. I’ve still got no problem with athletics in a smaller venue. Yeah, I know for a lot of people that’s heresy - but so was not having a cauldron high and in view of everyone (from Vancouver and London onwards), not having the OC in the athletics stadium (Rio) and not having a stadium OC at all (Paris). I just think it’s the inevitable we have to accept if we want new or a bigger pol of hosts - dual-use athletics/fotball stadiums are just not widely viable these days. it’s just ridiculous if Brisbane hosts and Olympics, and can’t get a decent legacy venue for cricket/AFL going forward beyond a bit of ad-hoc temporary tinkering. What a waste of an opportunity. I don't have a problem with athletics in a smaller venue either. I guess the only drawback would be smaller ticket sales? BTW, would this be the stadium for athletics only, or would this also be used as the stadium for the opening/closing ceremony? Sorry for the ignorance, but I'm not up to speed on the venue plan for the Brisbane Games... Quote

Sorry for the ignorance, but I'm not up to speed on the venue plan for the Brisbane Games... No, that's what the whole hoopla is all about. The ceremonies are now proposed for Suncorp (formerly Lang Park) stadium. Which is also a smaller, tight-fit rectangular stadium. Most everyone there is arguing that a newer/larger stadium for Brisbane is needed/wanted anyway (regardless of the 2032 Olympics). And that just refurbishing QSAC & Suncorp is only putting a band-aid on Brisbane's stadium issues & a total waste of taxpayer money. Quote

If the people of Brisbane feel they need a larger stadium for whatever they use it for, then I think that should be taken into account more so than a vanity stadium for the Olympics. I really think if the IOC thinks Brisbane's proposals for their stadiums meet their requirements, then that should be fine. Isn't that the new philosophy of the IOC anyway? Brisbane's plans could provide a successful template for other cities to follow so that even more cities can host the Olympics. Quote

If the people of Brisbane feel they need a larger stadium for whatever they use it for, then I think that should be taken into account more so than a vanity stadium for the Olympics. That's how it's listed, so yes. The thing is, the Queensland state gov't there has decided, for now anyway, not to build anything new for the Olympics, period. That's what has this ongoing debate over the stadium issue. Initial plans were to rebuild the Gabba stadium, which is much closer to the city, but when the budget on the proposed project increased, people didn't like that & then the whole project was then canned. Then there was an independent study to determine what would be best for Brisbane, & the results were a new stadium in their Victoria Park area would best fit the needs of the city. But then the State gov't balked over the cost of that & rejected the results. Which pretty much then brings us to the current QSAC/Suncorp deal, which was proposed by no other than IOC VP himself, John Coates. 12 minutes ago, ejaycat said: I really think if the IOC thinks Brisbane's proposals for their stadiums meet their requirements, then that should be fine. Isn't that the new philosophy of the IOC anyway? Brisbane's plans could provide a successful template for other cities to follow so that even more cities can host the Olympics. Yes & no. The IOC's so-called "new-norm" approach doesn't necessarily call not to build for the Games, but for a city to do what it thinks is best for their city. But now, it seems the IOC is so scared of bad PR, due to the bad headlines of white elephants in previous host cities, that now they're telling Brisbane not to build anything & just use what they currently have, without taking into consideration of what might be best for the city of Brisbane itself. Personally, I think that Brisbane is just too small, for now, for a 21st Century Olympics (since transport there is also of concern), & that's why they're running into these problems ITFP. So in that sense, they really wouldn't be a good template for other cities of it's same size to follow. Especially when the Australian Federal gov't is providing for half the bill (you know in the U.S. for example, that would not be possible, since the Feds here only provide for security). I know you haven't been on here for quite awhile, but I'd suggest reading through the general Brisbane 2032 thread, & this one from the beginning, to get a general sense of what's been going on with Brisbane 2032. Cause it's very much more complex than what it appears to be on the surface. Quote
Gonzo Posted July 24, 2024 Report Posted July 24, 2024 Clown show rolls on ----- No project validation report for $1.6bn QSAC stadium The government is yet to complete a project validation report for the $1.6bn QSAC stadium proposal for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. Opposition Deputy Leader Jarrod Bleijie was left stunned after the State Development and Infrastructure Director-General Graham Fraine admitted that, like the Gabba proposal, the government’s plans to redevelop the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre has not been costed through a PVR, also known as a business case. Mr Fraine said the government was still in the process of completing the PVR. “Why would the project validation report or due diligence not have occurred by the department to make recommendations to government before the (QSAC) announcement was made?” Mr Blejije asked the committee. Mr Fraine said the PVR would evaluate transport, environmental and podium costs and would means test the estimated $1.6bn cost. “That $1.6 billion was a cost that came out of the review panel and their report, which they themselves acknowledged during the course of putting it together would need to be tested,” he said. “And that is what the project validation report will do.” State Development and Infrastructure Minister Grace Grace earlier said there would not have been time to complete a PVR prior to the QSAC announcement as they take between 6-12 months to complete. “These are best estimates in relation to what we have and what we've done in the past when we did the intergovernmental agreement,” she said. “There's been no PVR on Victoria Park either. And I note that the opposition has supported all of the venues that the government has said that we will be going ahead with when it comes to the Games.” Quote

(lol) Its not for an Olympic swimming pool. Brisbane 2032 which will be using temporary drop-in pools for the swimming competition and warm-up pools exactly as Paris 2024 (Le Defense Arena) Los Angeles 2028 (Sofi Stadium) are doing. The $2.5bn actually for a centrally located multi-purpose concert and events venue which Brisbane needed anyway. This was the case long before the host election occurred and fully meets the IOC’s New Norm requirement that no new venue unless a legacy need exists. The Australian Government is paying in full for the Arena’s construction under it’s National Infrastructure Program. It’s not the Queensland Government which is paying for this piece of legacy infrastructure, the national government is. In the centre of South East Queensland, the fastest growing population area in the entire country, this much needed venue will finally provide Brisbane with a long awaited covered concert/events arena for legacy use. It’s the Olympic Games with its temporary drop-in pools that will benefit from this legacy concert/events venue called ‘Brisbane Live’. Under New Norm, 86% of Brisbane 2032 venues are either existing venues or temporary venues. This Brisbane Arena is a new venue and fully meets the New Norm requirements and will be a concert/events venue much used before, during and long after the Games have left town. Quote
Brekkie Boy Posted August 6, 2024 Report Posted August 6, 2024 Appreciate that @AustralianFan - gives me a bit more confidence but whilst the stadium issue dominates the headlines they'll always be doubt. The Olympics should be the biggest stage athletes compete on, so think at least a 60k stadia is required. At the moment the plan is for a venue a third of the size of the Sydney stadium. 1 Quote
