Brisbane 2032 Venues/Stadiums Thread

What seemed to be Greece's initial faux-paux, was not including Gianna Angelopoulous on the Athens 2004 organizing committee once she successfully won them the bid back in 1997 (due to whatever in-fighting that was going on at the time). When nothing was being done by 2000, she was asked to come back, & everything started to come together after that (& also still having to deal with recent post 9/11 security concerns. That's not an 'excuse'). And in the end, Greece still delivered, & even Rogge called them; "these Games were unforgettable dream Games".

Rio also had their financial crises to deal with into the lead-up to 2016 (not to mention the whole Zika drama). But in end, the Brazilians also delivered. You may call them "excuses", but I would like to call it "sh!t happens" in life sometimes. Case in point; some people call Tokyo 2020ne a "disaster", due to extenuating circumstances beyond their control. And the Japanese certainly can't ever be faulted for "poor planning".

That said, the point is the 2032 Games are still 9 years away, & anything can happen between now & then, that could bring the verdict of those Games in a positive or negative light. So let's not start tootin' your own horns just yet over the expense of others. It's almost as bad as those Angelinos always chiming that their city is the "model" for all future Games.

Brisbane Arena goes to the market. Shouldn’t be too long before the Brisbane Olympic Stadium follows:

“The Queensland government will soon conduct market soundings to determine the shape of the Brisbane Arena project on Roma Street.”

“The proposed 17,000-seat indoor stadium has been earmarked as Brisbane 2032’s Olympic swimming venue, with a drop-in pool to be installed for the duration of the Games.“

I really wish they'd scrap it and use the Sydney 2000 venue instead.

Like the Tokyo Marathon (held a 1000kms away in Sapporo), as long as all the branding, timing and signage is right no one watching TV will ever know.

Indeed. And a koala sanctuary really does seem better fitted to a community recreation precinct than a high performance niche sports facility.

Ballymore Stadium has opened the first stage of their redevelopment. It will host Hockey at Brisbane 2032.

Great Barrier Reef Arena has also been opened. There are no sports confirmed yet but if Cricket is added to the program, GBR Arena would be a potential venue. It may even host pre Games training camps too.

Funny you should bring that one up. It’s one that puzzles/concerns me.

Whitewater facilities are one of those expensive, specialised, dedicated facilities that put a burden on hosts. LA ‘84 can’t even make a business case for a temporary facility in LA environs and is touting instead using an existing centre in Oklahoma City.

Sydney’s Penrith centre was one of the successes of the games - it’s proven to be a success as a games legacy. During Brisbane’s bidding it was oft mentioned that it could use the Sydney centre so as to align with the IOC’s “new Norm” mantra to avoid any new, unnecessary construction of venues and use existing venues.

And now here we are with Brisbane planning a brand new centre, covered within the Federal Government’s contribution. How is this necessary or economically justified? Does Australia really NEED a second whitewater centre? I doubt it. It seems to me having two now destine’s one to become a white elephant.

Its absurd . Should be made to use Penrith.

This is where Brisbane's $7 billion in federal funding blows the whole idea of 2032 being some kind of poster child for a sustainable new norm. Not all medium sized cities have have a sugar daddy like Australia's federal government to shower it with billions like this. Right now - Brisbane is receiving 50% funding for its infrastructure from the Australian taxpayer. Sydney received a little under 5%. Melbourne in 1956 got 0%. If 2032 had to play by the rules of 1956 and 2000 it would struggle to cough up the additional money to cover the cost of these Games.

There is only ONE "poster child" for a 'sustainable' Games, & that is L.A. (lets get it right)!

"Not all medium-sized cities have a 'sugar daddy' like Australia's federal government to shower it with billions like this."

Its true though!

If San Diego, Austin or other American cities of a similar size to Brisbane got 50% of their infrastructure paid for by Washington they'd have no problems hosting the Olympics.

The article is quite vague but I think what they're suggesting is to build a permanent pool that can be used as the warm up pool? Surely they're not suggesting that the arena be a permanent aquatic centre.

Here comes the scope creep that will cause the billion dollar blow outs.

Meanwhile I wonder if the success of the 2023 World Cup has given the 2032 Olympic organisers pause to think about the Football tournament venues in 2032?

If they're not locked into AAMI Park i'd suggest they try and secure Docklands Stadium in Melbourne - AAMI Park is stupidly small and I guarantee Melbourne fans will sell out 55,000 seat Docklands in 2032. Same goes in Sydney - switch to Stadium Australia from SFS if they still can.
