Don’t laugh.

she won’t light the cauldron, but I bet she’ll be a torch bearer and likely appear in the opening ceremony. She’s a national hero now.

I've done (relatively simple, for now) ethnographic work for my uni degree, and I love the Olympics.

Not only did Raygun conduct ethnographic work, she became a literal Olympian in the process. Legend. I love her.

Why did the Ballroom DanceSport decide THEY should become the authority on Breaking? Its the equivalent of Tennis becoming the authority on Rugby. Idiots.

Because the World DanceSport Federation is the sport’s world governing body and runs the Olympic Breaking competitions at the Olympic Games.

Yes, they only do ballroom. Why did they arrogantly takeover breaking?

I'm going to venture a guess here.  That's the only way Breaking could've gotten in.  World DanceSport is a recognized federation by the IOC.  Does Breaking have one?  I guess none.  So that's the only way the IOC would've acceded to Estanguet's silly wish.

Even if Estanguet wanted breaking for 2024, and that was not a good thing (from my point of view), we must still not forget that he was already present at the 2018 YOG; so Estanguet did not have much to do to convince the IOC which, in reality, was already rather favorable to the arrival of breaking in the Olympic world even before Paris obtained the games.

Right.  But if Estanguet didn't want it, it would not have been included.  Why not petanque/boulle or jai a'lai?

I guess it depends as well on when Brisbane holds its athletics schedule, if it's first week it might be too tight. I'd expect him to be in the LA handover though, assuming he breaks 9.58 before then (looks very likely tbh). Even better if he goes full Bolt & obliterates the world record at LA itself ;)

Yeah, how he does in LA will be the test. If he makes the podium in any race there, his chances (and hype) for w032 will soar.

Could he actually be quite significant in Brisbane's plans? Bearing in mind the stage they're at now, not much major building will have happened before next year's World Athletics Championships, & if he breaks or even comes near to either of Bolt's world records there, would the interest steer them towards Victoria Park simply because it could be a bigger stadium?

Or he could end up like Jack Hale

Who the hell is Jack Hale you ask?

Ran 10.13 as a 16 year old (a record Gout just broke), was the 6th fastest 16 yo in the world at the time and only improved his PB to 10.12 as a 22 year old and never came close to being selected in the Olympics or World Champs

Quite. There’s no doubt he’s an exciting prospect now, but who knows what could happen in eight years. Injuries, other unexpected setbacks. Look at Peter Bol, our hot hope after Tokyo. Best to let it all play out and see.

Interesting, both our caldron lighters to date have been track athletes. Surprising we haven’t had a swimmer yet. Kaylee McKeown? She’s a Brisbane girl too.

Would like to see Kieran Perkins and Susie O'Neill light the torch TOGETHER in Brisbane. Not only they're both Brisbane products and swimming legends, but it could also serve, in a way, a nod to when Australia made Olympic history in being the first nation to have both male and female co-flagbearers with Moscow 1980 from Max Metzger and Denise Boyd marching in the OC. But perhaps for the same reasons suggested about Cathy Freeman here, they too come from the same era as Freeman and can possibly connect with Sydney 2000 to Brisbane. But maybe too distant for that now and could work against them.

Australia certainly has lots of Olympians to happily chose from for this. How about Sally Pearson, Saya Sakakibara (who is from the Brisbane-Gold Coast region), Cate and Bronte Campbell (ditto), Ariane Titmus?
