By the time the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Opening Ceremony commences,  a total of seven sets of Summer Olympic and Paralympic Ceremonies will have occurred since that memorable night on 15 September 2000 at Stadium Australia when Sydney welcomed the world with a stunning, mega-breathtaking Olympic Opening Ceremony for the ages.

That translates to, between 2004 and 2028, a total of 28 Summer Olympics or Paralympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies since Sydney 2000.

How will Brisbane and Queensland welcome the world in 2032?

Importantly, how will Ceremonies, gimmicks, theatrical and creative presentation have evolved in those preceding 32 years since Sydney 2000, the last time Australia hosted?

Will they be downsized or upsized ?  Will keeping the shows wholly contained in a stadium be old “old hat”, or will there be a return to blockbuster stadium shows or a combo?

What or who would you like to see more of, less of or who should be the director of Ceremonies?

Should there be different Directors for each Ceremony?

The rebuilt Gabba was announced last year to become the Olympic Stadium and venue for the 2032 Ceremonies.

Ceremonies could be at the Gabba and Brisbane River with the Brisbane River to host portions of the artistic display and Gabba to host the formal protocol segment. No doubt organisers will want a ceremony by the Brisbane River similar to Paris 2024 if Paris 2024's river Opening Ceremony is a success.

Yeah but the difference is that seine has plenty of places where the most important parts of the ceremony can take place, and its course will be far larger than brisbane river. For example the most important part in paris will take place au trocadero, which has a pretty bid explanade and can hold big crowds as we saw at paris handoverJardines del Trocadero - Wikipedia, la enciclopedia libre

In brisbane there's not really a place that can hold at least 10k athletes, unless you put seats on the main highway which would inmediately cut city-transit, also its bridges are far smaller in width and the only real place where i see this coming out is south bank. Even with renovations I dont think brisbane river bank will be able to hold thousands of spectators and less of a chance about a parade, cuz there will not be a real finish point. Something they can do is building a temporary stadium over the south bank lagoon and hold the opening ceremony in thereStreets Beach - Visit Brisbane

still keep thinking that the river being very large and not really having the capacity to put stands along it can be a pushdown for the river model. So a common stadium ceremony at gabba will be better, cheaper and specially less problematic than the parade.

Could well be on the cards to involve the Brisbane River being so close to the Olympic Stadium.  Given Queensland’s stunning tropical scenery, they may well involve other locations too around the state, “live”,  not recorded as it was for Athens 2004 and the drumming sequence from Olympia.

The 1988 World Expo in Brisbane involved the River to some extent.

A singapore 2010 platform could be instaled in the place mentioned before, the only concern for me would be all the trees and buildings placed where there was the expo but surely a platform stadium like in singapore and making a temporary amphiteather could make an astonishing background as like istanbul proposed for 2020. The main concern would be the impact on the price tag but if it is temporary something can be done

Would be very costly to build a temporary structure over water as Singapore did, which is a permanent structure and is still there today, 12 years later.

Singapore’s over-the-water platform performance area was constructed in a very sheltered waterway, compared to the strong current in the Brisbane River which recently swept away one or two river ferry terminals.

That whole Brisbane South Bank area where the 1988 World Expo was held is hosting several 2032 Olympic sports so it can’t really be used for a full Opening Ceremony as well as there isn’t the space like at Trocadero in Paris 2024.

I still can't get my head around the idea of an Olympic opening ceremony in the stadium where Harmison bowled the worst ball in the history of cricket :P. The river does look really wide though, there's a risk it'd end up like the Diamond Jubilee thing on the Thames, where there was a parade on the river but it was really cloudy and nobody could see the other side! Is there still nobody thinking that Australia's third city could justify a stadium at least as big as Perth's? I get cost-cutting and making the games fit Brisbane but since the Gabba will basically be a new stadium anyway...

Welll...that's exactly what I said earlier, if it is no possible for 2032 then why pointing out it was done back in 1988? Brisbane would'nt loose to much by making ceremonies in their main stadium, its not like if brisbane river was as iconic as the parisian seine,  or sidney's harbour. Pushing brisbane river for hosting the ceremony would be like asking London for making the thing in the thames, its a cool sport for tourists, but not for a massive event

Lol is that where Paris got the idea from? Maybe that'll become the standard format, although I don't know where LA could do similar...SoFi is very much a closed stadium.

I'd love to design the emblem,  branding, design, mascots, pictograms... or maybe even direct the ceremonies for Brisbane 2032.

Both the Shanghai World Expo and 2010 Asian Games Ceremonies were done with a river setting. Brisbane should consider an outdoor setting for their Cereomonies by the Brisbane River

Speaking of using the Brisbane River:

Credit: Big Ideas Revealed To Make Brisbane Olympics 2032 The Greatest - 22 July 2022

“Hundreds of ideas have been submitted to the Brisbane City Council on how to revitalise inner-city precincts during the Brisbane Olympic Games 2032.”

“Among ideas submitted include a Riverstage Indigenous Eternal Flame Landmark, a massive natural playground, and a floating Olympic pool in the Brisbane River”.

One of the ideas is the concept of an Indigenous Eternal Flame on the banks of the Brisbane River:

A Brisbane River Opening Ceremony is feasible. Sydney did their Opening Ceremony inside the stadium and held a part of the Closing Ceremony on Sydney Harbour.

Ric Birch wanted a Sydney Harbour Opening Ceremony but decided to go with the tradtional ceremony at Stadium Australia instead.

Amazing hearing about Ric Birch’s ideas for a Sydney Harbour Opening Ceremony in 2000.  Do you know where he talks about this, is it a tv documentary do you know or a media interview?

For 2032, if not Australian Ric Burch’s company Spectak International, I’m sure fellow Aussie David Atkins DAE Global would also want to be creating and directing the Brisbane Ceremonies.

Speaking of Sydney 2000 Ceremonies maestro … Ric BurchTYPSMAk.jpg

By the time Brisbane’s Olympic Games rolls around, Matilda, the 13-metre-tall kangaroo that 1982 Commonwealth Games director Ric Birch made wink at Queen Elizabeth, will be 50.

Now, thoughts of fire and water are coming to Birch.

eZYR1F6.jpg

The crack of burning sugar cane, the silent power of the Brisbane River and Queensland’s “different sensibilities” are in entertainment supremo Birch’s mind to pitch Brisbane’s 2032 Games to the world.
