Does the Winter Olympics just need a rotating roster of hosts?

Recommended Posts

Hush, New Norm is sacrosanct!

It was delivered by Fencing 1976 when he had climed down from Mount Doom, err Krasnaya Polyana, err Sinai, after splitting the Black, sorry, Red Sea and leading the IOC to the dessert, I mean through the desert, to dance around the golden cashcow, oops, to meet with his mates Vlad & Xi.

The middle of a pandemic was no excuse to move so far ahead of any expected schedule, with many NOCs still confused and caught offside by the new rules, and ample time and flexibility to cultivate new bidders into continuous dialogue (as opposed to now, with the IOC having a year at most to attract anybody new into the 2030 dialogue).

And to think, all the innuendo and suspicion over Brisbane’s elevation could have been avoided.

And yet, the 2032 Summer Olympics are bound for Australia in the safe, quality hands of Brisbane 2032.

Done and dusted.

There is no expected schedule.

The IOC will move in to secure a quality candidate whenever it see fits.

That’s the point of the flexibility of the New Norm system.

In the middle of a pandemic, the ending of which was unclear, there was no other quality candidate besides Brisbane.

And that’s a good result. Just a pity the circumstances of its election has fired such suspicion and innuendo. Brisbane didn’t deserve that.

At the time there were certainly expectations that there were a good four or five years to go before anything got serious - especially in the middle of an epidemic that had forced most NOCs to curtail their activities for the duration. I wonder what they were referring to when respondents to the host selection surveys last year complained of “rules changing mid-process”?

Anyway, enough of your Jihad. Back to topic.

Zhangjiakou looks like it would meet all the criteria for a permanent rotating host slot. Wouldn’t that be great!

Jihad ??

Seriously Rols ??

You’re meant to be a Moderator on Gamesbids.com and setting an example.

You should be using moderate language.

Not deliberately directing such inflammatory language as “Jihad” directed at other Gamesbids members, namely myself.

You can’t pick and choose when you’re a Gamesbids Moderator representing Gamesbids.com and when you Troll with inflammatory language as you have just chosen to do.

Sheesh!

Jihad is exactly how you treat any discussion that is in any way not wholly supportive of the “New Norm”. You treat any criticism of it as heresy.

Answer me this, honestly.

Do you believe that the “New Norm” is flawless?

Do you believe that it’s problems should be raised and discussed?

Water off a duck’s back for Brisbane.

They got the Games as the first out of the blocks when New Norm was announced 3 years earlier.

Seriously, the whole world knew about New Norm.

The date of the New Norm launch document was February 2018,

just before the PyeongChang Winter Games.

It was New.

It was New at the exact same time in 2018 to all 2032 aspirants, including Brisbane.

Brisbane ran like the wind out of the blocks and caught the prize.

What were the others doing?

You’re an adult Rols.

If you use inflammatory language like “Jihad”, you should expect to be called out for it every time.

Deflecting much.

Jihad. Holy War. Crusade. Fatwa. Whatever…

i don’t consider them inflammatory. I consider them accurate to how you so obsessively pursue any comments that are the slightest critical of your Holy “New Norm”.

Seriously Rols, you’re making it worse,

You’re actually defiantly doubling down on inflammatory language and adding more!

It’s just a debate on a new bidding system,

not an excuse to let fly which you just have in the worst possible way.

Please stick to the debate, not disgusting inflammatory language as you have just displayed yet again under a very weak disguise.

You’re the one who has deflected the debate by refusing to address the message and instead resort to attacking the messenger. It’s all too common.

For the record, in my professional career I have used all those terms in my reportage. Describing management boards’ jihads against rebel shareholders, politicians’ crusades against rival factions etc etc. My sub-editors, editors or readers  have never complained of me using those terms as disgusting inflammatory language. All are common usage to describe continuously determined and focussed behaviours.

example, from the Merriam-Webster Webster Dictionary:

In running for reëlection, pursuing his political jihad against progressives, and eyeing 2024, DeSantis has raised about a hundred million dollars.—John Cassidy, The New Yorker, 17 Sep. 2022

Your words today to me are deeply offensive to me.

Your words to me today:

“Jihad”

”Fatwa”

”Holy Wars”

—————————————————

Seriously,  what on earth possesses you to introduce these offensive terms during a debate on Olympic bidding?

Spare me your manufactured outrage.

Honestly, to be triggered by one rather unremarkable use of a word in common usage in all spheres of media

Poor excuse for your behaviour and a string of offensive words.

It’s clear you have no idea of the harm your own choice of words.

You’re quite happy to dish it out, but when called to account, you’re suddenly on denial.

If I could block you, I would.  But as a Gamesbids Moderator Rols, you can dish out offensive words but no-one can block you.

Truly appalling behaviour today Rols, about which I have duly taken screenshots of.

I have NOT denigrated your race, your sex, your sexuality, your social status, your occupation, your nationality, your physical features, your intellect, your religion or any other form of identity.

I have characterised your conduct in a discussion as akin to that of a religious zealot defending their holy texts. I think the comparison is apt.

Your reaction has been out of all proportion. So much so, that I can’t help but suspect it’s manufactured. That you’re triggered more by my existence on the board more than anything I said. The alternative explanation is concerning and bizarre.

You’re embarrassing yourself with this latest tantrum.

You,

Rols,

seriously think that if you don’t find something offensive that no-one else will.

Are you serious?

Shockingly selfish, inwardly focussed behaviour that you throw out insults like this

The same system, for all its flaws and abuses, that delivered Lillehammer, Salt Lake City, Vancouver on the WOG side and Barcelona, Sydney, London, Paris, LA on the SOGs.

Was it flawed? Of course. But just as true, Is the “New Norm” perfect? Of course not. And it sure as hell hasn’t solved the issues dogging the winter games.

Can we just get past this crap that the old system is irredeemable with no positive aspects, and the “New Norm” is beyond criticism. And also the offensive suggestion that discussing flaws in the “new Norm” is to automatically support the old regime.

It’s through criticism that  progress happens. It was criticism that saw the faults of the old system finally addressed. It will be criticism that will see the flaws of the “New Norm” hopefully addressed.

No-one said New Norm is perfect.    No-one ever.

But its a lot better, more flexible and less costly than the rigid, costly old bidding system and for the Summer Games has reignited widespread interestin hosting them from multiple interested parties, including 10 candidates with whom the IOCis currently in continuous dialogue with.

As far as the Winter Games, we could be going through a transformative period with this idea of a rotating period of winter hosts in a warming clinate.   Today’s announcement about a possible three-way effort to jointly stage the 2030 Games by Switzerland, France and Italy might also become part of this new push.

We wait and see.

Spot on re 2032.

In the middle of a 100 year pandemic:

  1. a German bid wracked by in-fighting and with the spectre of a potential unfavourable referendum hanging over it, or
  2. the Safe, Quality Hands of Brisbane 2032 and from the country who had arguably produced “the Best Olympic Games ever”.

Again, a no brainer.

In the middle of the pandemic, the IOC moved in to lock in Brisbane for 2032.

You mean the Best Games Ever selected under the "old broken costly inflexible budging system"?

"In the middle of the pandemic, the IOC moved in to lock in Brisbane for 2032." Yes, they did. And it was a shady move. Whether you like it or not they got the Games under a cloak of darkness and this will forever be a mark on Brisbane's 2032 legacy. Brisbane's allocation will never match the sheer magic of that night in 1993. Many Australians are completely unaware the Olympics are coming back to Australia. In the 1990s it was huge news.
