What a morning here in Oz!

First Cam McEvoy. This was a bonus. Not that I didn’t have hopes for him, but the 50m is always a lottery. And the first Aussie bloke I think to crash the women’s gold medal rush at Paris.

Then Kanylee McKeown. Got the double double backstroke and became the first Australian EVER to win four individual gold medals (yep, beating Thorpe, Fraser at al).

And finally Saya Sakakibara. I was trying to avoid knowing how her race went, but my partner let the cat out of the bag when he said we had 11 golds, which meant I knew she myst have done it. I was really hoping she’d do it, after her bad crash at Tokyo, and the story of her brother Kai who’d suffered severe brain injury in the same sport (it’s sure a f*cking dangerous sport). She’d been totally dominant in all the races here - so deserved.

For the record, she is in a relationship with Romain Mahieu, who won bronze 20 minutes earlier in the men's race that saw the historic French triple. I imagine that made the day even better for her.

Yeah, he jumped onto the track to hug her just as she finished. I was just trying to find a pic of it

Loved Sara’s post-race interview:

Speaking to Channel 9, the Gold Coast local was stunned to have won gold for Australia.

"I honestly can't believe it right now. It all feels like a blur. This whole day was a blur. It is crazy. I feel that it's a dream. It is real, right?" the 23-year-old said.

"Every setback I had since the moment I was on, I thought I am going to give this another crack, I just had that in mind. I wanted it, I wanted it.

"I knew it just comes down to like a split second and all I had to do was just f***** go, and I just f****** went and I didn't want to leave here without making myself proud."

Now the swimming’s over,  guess we’ve hit the wall and are hoping for those surprise medals to lift us further now. I suppose that will change at LA, where we’ll have the slower start, and look to a late swimming-led surge in the second week.

Nice to see Nicola Olyslagers get silver and Eleanor Patterson get shared bronze in high jumping at the Stade. And if we’re going to miss gold, can’t begrudge it to Ukraine (and also give them a chance to double medal)

What have both the Boomers and Opals did to deserve to open their elimination rounds in basketball with Serbia? This could be scary considering the Serbian pedigree. I remember when the Serbians knocked off the Opals in the quarterfinals after barely qualifying in Rio De Janero in what turned out to be the great Penny Taylor's final game, and her teammates, embarassed over what happened for what they failed to do, couldn't look at her in the eye.

The bronze-winning Boomers even with the young and dynamic Josh Giddey have aging players with Patty Mills not what he once was. Joe Ingles isn't around now. Will the surviving Opals players learn from what happened 8 years ago? If Lauren Jackson was around then, it would not have happened.

Mates, don't ever touch cocaine! Just say no...

Unnamed Australian Kookaburra Field Hockey Player Taken Into Custody In Paris With 16 Year Old Drug Dealer Over A Cocaine Transaction

And the Opals just blasted Serbia convincingly 85-67 in the Quarterfinals. As many of you know here, I'm an American but I really enjoy and follow the Australian/New Zealand sports scenes. Right now, I'm kinda miffed as to why NBC in its non-Peacock/online Paris 2024 broadcasts, they're not giving the Opals some love--hence the normal FIBA broadcasting duo serving the worldwide OBS feed. I think it's Jeff Taylor and Kim Smith we get for the non NBC-designated commentators. NBC hardly talks about the Opals at all and show one of their games despite being a serious medal contender. Australia does have a number of WNBA players (and have some serious previous WNBA experience in the case of Lauren Jackson), even some those are not currently on the roster like Shyla Heal and are really good. Surely, Nine and Stan Sport are given the Opals much respect in their coverage.

Bad news though: they as reward will very likely face Team USA in the semis once the USA dispenses Nigeria.

As for the Matildas, Sam Kerr's ACL injury clearly worked against them in a very powerful group that they were in. Thought they would advance out of group play. Given the momentum they got from last summer as WWC co-hosts and capturing the nation's hearts, I thought this would carry over to here. Catley, Arnold, Heyman, Fowler, Foord, Hunt, Kennedy, Van Egmond, Gorry, Carpenter, Carpenter, Torpey, Raso, Hunt, Vine, and Wheeler all certainly were capable in stepping up in Kerr's absence. We'll forgive them for that and of the group they were in. Disappointing all around though.

  • 40 years ago we won Gold at LA 1984
  • 20 years later we won Gold at Athens 2004

… and now 20 years on at Paris 2024, Olympic Champions!!

BEST EVER DAY FOR AUSTRALIA IN ANY OLYMPIC GAMES OF THR MODERN ERA

Congratulations Nina Kennedy winning the Women’s Pole Vault and in doing so produced a performance which not only won Australia’s 4th Gold Medal of the day, but Australia’s best ever single day performance at any Olympic Games since 1896.

Coupled with today’s Australia’s bronze medallists Matthew Denny (men’s discus) Jemima Montag and Rhysian Cowley (mixed relay walk marathon) and the other three Gold Medallists, Australia has had a huuuggge day and broken our Athens 2004 total gold medals won at any Olympic Games which was 17.

Our new Paris 2024 record now stands at 18 golds …… and the Games aint over yet!
