The Seoul Metropolitan Government is to ramp up its drive for hosting international sports events in the future, including the 2036 Summer Olympics.”

“Seoul is currently hosting the 26th General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees, which runs until Friday, and the city government aims to use the event as a springboard for its 2036 bid.”

“Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon will also meet with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach on Thursday and deliver Seoul’s intention to host the 2036 Summer Games.”

“The cost of hosting the event is estimated to range from 5.5 trillion won ($3.82 billion) to 68 trillion won. The Seoul Metropolitan Government says it will be able to reduce the budget by utilizing the established facilities built for the 1988 Seoul Olympics and using sports facilities owned by universities and the private sector.”

”A new complex for sports and MICE in Jamsil to be set up in 2029 and the planned remodeling of Jamsil Olympic Stadium in 2026 will also be leveraged. A new residence for athletes, if built, will be sold to the private sector after the event to further reduce costs.”

Finally, now that Moon Jae In (the moron who thought a bid with the North was a good idea) is out of the picture, South Korea can now do a serious Olympic bid.

Honestly I think they should go with Seoul. Busan would also be more than capable of doing the job and they have also become an attractive and innovative city over the last years (plus they could do all of the sailing events here without spreading the venues location too much). However, I recall he later is still bidding for the 2030 Expo, which would also be a huge event for them logistically wise. Not sure if also bidding for the Olympics would also hurt their ambitions for 2030.

“Lee Kee-heung, head of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee (KSOC), told insidethegames that his organisation was planning to hold discussions with the country’s Government over the possibility of launching a bid for the Games.”
