Seoul to bid for 2036 Summer Olympic Games - mk.co.kr - 18Oct22

“The cost of hosting the event is estimated to range from 5.5 trillion won ($3.82 billion) to 68 trillion won. ”A new complex for sports and MICE in Jamsil to be set up in 2029 and the planned remodeling of Jamsil Olympic Stadium in 2026 will also be leveraged. A new residence for athletes, if built, will be sold to the private sector after the event to further reduce costs.”

Finally, now that Moon Jae In (the moron who thought a bid with the North was a good idea) is out of the picture, South Korea can now do a serious Olympic bid.

Honestly I think they should go with Seoul. Busan would also be more than capable of doing the job and they have also become an attractive and innovative city over the last years (plus they could do all of the sailing events here without spreading the venues location too much). However, I recall he later is still bidding for the 2030 Expo, which would also be a huge event for them logistically wise. Not sure if also bidding for the Olympics would also hurt their ambitions for 2030.

The IOC would never have accepted such a volatile joint bid anyway.

If anything, dropping this idea probrably rised their chances significantly. (Of course, without the elephant on the room that is Brisbane being 4 years earlier in nearby timezones...)

I don't think anyone in their right mind honestly viewed the so-called joint bid as nothing more than a publicity stunt for Moon.

Seoul has an opportunity here for a solo bid that would bring a much needed renovation to the Jamsil Sports Complex though there are concerns about potential costs in the master plan. If nothing else, I could even see venues in nearby Gangneung from the Pyeonghang games potentially playing a part.
