AustralianFan Posted October 19, 2022 Author Report Posted October 19, 2022 Could it be Busan 2036 ? …. or Seoul 2036 ? Quote
Ikarus360 Posted October 19, 2022 Report Posted October 19, 2022 Finally, now that Moon Jae In (the moron who thought a bid with the North was a good idea) is out of the picture, South Korea can now do a serious Olympic bid. Honestly I think they should go with Seoul. Busan would also be more than capable of doing the job and they have also become an attractive and innovative city over the last years (plus they could do all of the sailing events here without spreading the venues location too much). However, I recall he later is still bidding for the 2030 Expo, which would also be a huge event for them logistically wise. Not sure if also bidding for the Olympics would also hurt their ambitions for 2030. https://www.expo2030busan.kr/ Quote

iceman530 Posted March 14, 2023 Report Posted March 14, 2023 Exactly. This bid all a sudden looks much less laughable and all a sudden respectable Quote
stryker Posted March 16, 2023 Report Posted March 16, 2023 I don't think anyone in their right mind honestly viewed the so-called joint bid as nothing more than a publicity stunt for Moon. Seoul has an opportunity here for a solo bid that would bring a much needed renovation to the Jamsil Sports Complex though there are concerns about potential costs in the master plan. If nothing else, I could even see venues in nearby Gangneung from the Pyeonghang games potentially playing a part. Quote
AustralianFan Posted November 3, 2024 Author Report Posted November 3, 2024 @yoshi @Roger87 Just looking for updates on Seoul’s bid for 2036 and this is what I found: Seoul mayor confident in 2036 Olympics bid 12 August 2024 Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon voiced strong confidence in the city's ability to host a profitable and successful 2036 Summer Olympics, citing Seoul's well-established infrastructure and robust public safety measures as key factors that would contribute to the event's success. In a Facebook post on Sunday titled "Again, the Seoul Olympics," Oh reiterated his commitment to bringing the Olympics back to Seoul, a pledge he first made two years ago. After visiting the Paris Olympics last month, he stressed the growing importance of sustainable, low-carbon and cost-effective Games. "Seoul is the ideal location for such an event," Oh stated. Credit: Korea Herald ******************* 2036 Seoul Olympics will be a "Black Olympics” 21 October 2024 Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon once again emphasized that the 2036 Seoul Olympics will be a "Black Olympics." Mayor Oh presented a special honorary citizenship certificate to Cooning Patama Liswa-Dtrakul, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), at Seoul City Hall on the 21st. At the meeting, Mayor Oh said, "The Republic of Korea has begun a new challenge to host the 2036 Olympics," adding, "We are confident of hosting a surplus Olympics as successful as the Paris Olympics and are fully prepared to host a meaningful Olympics." Mayor Oh asked IOC member Kuning Patama, "We ask for your attention and help to host the 2036 Olympics, which can publicize the pride and pride of Asians around the world." AustralianFan Posted November 3, 2024 Author Report Posted November 3, 2024 Found some more updates re Seoul 2036 to do with the refurbishment of the 1988 Olympic Stadium in preparation for it’s 2036 bid: From Yon Hap News Agency 29 August 2023 “Jamsil Olympic Stadium, the main venue of the 1988 Summer Olympics, will undergo a three-year facelift to be reborn as an urban sports and cultural complex, the Seoul city government said Tuesday.” ************************ From The Stadium Business 10 July 2024 Seoul to rework Jamsil Olympic Stadium as temporary ballpark 10 July 2024 The City of Seoul has announced that KBO League baseball teams LG Twins and the Doosan Bears will temporarily relocate to an adapted Jamsil Olympic Stadium, whilst work takes place to transform their current home. The latest news comes after the Seoul Metropolitan Government in September detailed plans to build a domed stadium on the site of the Jamsil Baseball Stadium, with the new venue set to feature an adjoining hotel overlooking the field. The stadium will form part of the wider Jamsil Sports MICE Complex, a multi-purpose development on the site of the 1988 Olympic Games in the Korean capital which also includes the Olympic Stadium. In a statement, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said: “Jamsil Main Stadium will be used as a replacement baseball stadium during the construction period of the dome stadium, but it will be built with a focus on the convenience of visitors with citizen safety as the top priority, so that the word temporary is meaningless. We will strive to quickly and safely promote the construction of Jamsil Dome Stadium.” In August 2023, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced plans for a major redevelopment of Jamsil Olympic Stadium as part of proposals to bid for the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. Located in Songpa-gu, a district in the southeastern part of the South Korean capital, Jamsil Olympic Stadium opened in 1984, ahead of Seoul’s staging of the 1986 Asian Games, followed by the 1988 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Roger87 Posted November 3, 2024 Report Posted November 3, 2024 Nice the mayor is on board, but if the proper national government (In an unitary centralist government like South Korea) isn't making the real deal with them, it just end as nice promises. And so far, the national government has been really quiet on this since months. It's like the Nice-French Alps bid, only when the national government of Paris gave the real confidence the bid was real to happen. Quote

It's the same for any country anyway, I think; with the notable exception of the US (and maybe 2-3 other developed countries with a very strong federal system, like Australia?), the national government will always end up with the largest share to pay. Agreed. The Government of Korea is currently quiet on the 2036 bid and so government financial gurantees is sure to be high on the list of discussion items between the IOC Future Host Commission and the 2036 bid team. Public opinion in support of the Seoul 2036 has consistently remained in positive territory throughout. This from En.Namu.wiki: Public opinion on hosting the Olympics is not negative : In public opinion polls on hosting the Olympics, there is overall support, with 72% in favor in October 2022 , 71% in August 2024 , and 68% in September 2024 . Unless a country is an absolute dictator who can suppress opposing public opinion, the competitiveness of a candidate country in hosting is determined by public opinion, and in fact, there are many cases of giving up on hosting the Olympics due to negative public opinion and public sentiment. In this respect, the high public opinion in favor of hosting the 2036 Olympics in Seoul can be seen as a positive factor in the bid. Quote
iceman530 Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 This........looks like its gonna be a really strong bid. It feels like its between Seoul and Istanbul right now. Quote
