Yeah - kind of silly to be talking 2034. Focus on locking down a great bid from Southern Ontario in 2030 first before even a muttering of 2034.

They should be engaging directly with feasible nations . I'd love to see a bid from Kenya focused on Nairobi. I think with the right support and mentoring it would be possible.

No real planning for an Auckland centric games has been made yet.

A mayoral candidate has stupidly brought back the idea of a waterfront stadium with such a long lead in time...Don't even go there...

Forgetting that the CGF insists on using what you already have - in Auckland's case, Albany Stadium which could have a track laid in it or Waitakere Stadium that would just need temporary seating.

I think Sky Stadium in Wellington would be a perfect location to host the Athletics. The new Christchurch Stadium or Eden Park could host ceremonies.

Excuse my ignorance because I know very little about stadiums in NZ but would Albany Stadium even fit a track? It appears to be rectangular.

How the 2026 Victorian Commonwealth Games will change the event for the future

Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive Katie Sadlier told the Herald Sun African nations were showing interest in a similar style Games, with events spread across towns and cities.

“The games is a huge exercise if you do it on your own in one spot, so the evolution of having the Games in several Victorian hubs is something we are very excited and open minded about,” Ms Sadlier said.

“Having Australia first off the ranks to run something that isn’t on one site is really exciting and I am confident they will do a fantastic job.’’

Commonwealth Games Australia chief executive Craig Phillips said: “We see it as an opportunity to develop a model that is sustainable and that notion that a whole nation, say for example, New Zealand could host a Games across multiple cities and towns and potentially cross border hosting.

“So I think for us the significance of Victoria 2026 is, if we can make it work, and it work well, then it broadens the number of nations that could host the Games.”

Small Commonwealth countries are understood to be relying on a successful delivery of the Victorian 2026 Games to allow future Games bids from a coalition of Pacific or African countries.

There is also a big push to provide more qualifying slots for competitors from smaller countries to be able to compete in Victoria.

Victoria’s plan of hosting up to 21 sports across four regional hubs is a fresh template for the Games organisers and is designed to give confidence for small countries, and regions to bid for future Games.

Mr Phillips said the concept was to have overarching Games branding, so the international television audience saw a ‘Victoria Games’.

But within that there would be scope for the regional hubs to introduce their own “flavour”.

New Zealand may be the country that saves the games for another dew decades.

NZ'ers have been orgasming over these games and no doubt the Adern era will want to get a games locked in for 2034 before next years general election which highly likely will see them loose power.

Yes definitely at least they'll want something positive to go out on...and leave National with the hard work of laying out a clear plan. - Only to come back and be Govt when the Games are on and take credit as NZ's election cycles seem to pattern out.

Overall the '22 games have been pretty good for the original TRADITIONAL CWG sports. The team events that get all the anticipated glamour have fallen short.

If the CGF want to pull a double host bid and bring 2030 and 34 to the table next year...then what's to stop the NZOC/NZ Govt from going for 2030 with an Auckland centric bid head to head with Ontario-Hamilton...a great final build up to Brisbane '32. - failing that...

All the while putting in a long term planning for a NZ wide super games in 2034 post Olympics?

I do prefer 2034 as NZ's turn...It will be decades overdue and the look of the games will be vastly different 54 years after we previously hosted. (hopefully the OC wont be so maori-centric as it was in 1990 and more reflect the "everybody" nature of today's diverse society.

You mention 1990 being so 'maori-centric'. I have an inkling Victoria 2026's Opening Ceremony will be largely focused on Victoria's ATI heritage.

Could Wellington host as Wellington? After Auckland and Christchurch it's the capital's turn surely... although obviously Christchurch recovery games would be very very special.

Wellington does not have the venues to go it alone, neither does it have the infrastructure, a bit of frost and the whole train network goes down for example.

Wishful thinking but you know that the OC will be Maori culture dominated. By the end of the decade NZ culture will be Maori culture 100%. Asian, Indian, African, European, british will all be relegated to individual times such as diwali, chinese new year etc.

:o I wouldn't be too deflated just yet...There will be a society backlash when the Govt changes. I'm more worried it will trigger off something so much worse.

Yes there will be the traditional maori welcome but as we are seeing with OCs this century, a more focus on community. Yes to tradition but also to reflect on what NZ has become. - Who'd thought that we would be launching rockets into space nowadays back in 1990?

(I do know that a mention was made after the 1990 OC that although the "war story of NZ" up to the Treaty signing was amazing, it was only after the Pacific Islands dance routine (reflecting Auckland) came in that the tempo of the ceremony really picked up.)

Latest political poll if election was today, shows that Jacinda and Labour would lose with National and ACT forming a right leaning government. Jacinda and grant Robertson better get on the phone to the CGF as soon as he touches down back in Wellington lol

NZ or Malaysia would be preferable to another location in GB.

Malaysia-Singapore joint bid could work. Or, as mentioned in the article, an East African games could prove attractive. Caribbean I doubt, due to infrastructure proving an issue. Pacific would be even worse. Why not Malta or Cyprus? Although, there are potential members that would make things interesting. If the Gulf countries ever decided to join the Commonwealth and bid for a Games, they'd get a CG easily. Same with Egypt...

Well that escalated quickly lol  Best news for the Commonwealth Games in a long time, we just need someone for 2030 now. Mad to think that if Canada comes through, it'd be the first time this century that 2 Games in a row would be outside UK/Oz.
