Lviv 2038 WOGs as part of the rebuild/revitalization effort courtesy of seized Russian assets? Pie in the sky or even a small possibility?

Recommended Posts

Back when I was talking up Lviv and Ukraine I never, ever in my most frightening nightmares thought it would become what it has.  This will eventually all pass, and I am increasingly confident Ukraine is going to pull off the surprise win here (nothing for sure but they are doing a hell of a job trading minimal ground gains for massive amounts of Russian blood.  Once a few more NATO toys arrive I expect/hope the tide to truly shift).  Assuming Ukraine wins.......whether its by early next year or even five years' time, a country rebuild the likes we have never seen before will be undertaken, and countries are already prepping for that day.  Cities will be completely re-invented courtesy of Russian reparations from seized assets under the watchful eye of city planners to make sure grifting is at a minimum/completely avoided.  A revitalization plan the likes we have never seen before will be undertaken once Ukraine mops the last Russian from its land.

So what makes Lviv possibly work?  You wanna talk about a games that could absolutely captivate the world and bring everyone together, look no further.  This will truly be for the people of Ukraine and a healing moment to show they have overcome the Russo-Fascists.  And on the dime of seized Russian assets?  Have at it!  Im sure the pre/post ceremony would be the most must see TV thing we have ever seen.  I want the poetic justice of Russia to pay for this whole thing with all the seized money, that would just be too wonderful

Granted, I emphasize this project would be furthest on the backburner to getting the absolute baseline standards up and running again........all necessary infrastructure, but if the undertaking parallels the European post WWII rebuild, it actually is feasible.  In the Ukraine revitalization, there will need to be something for the people too, and if this can somehow be molded into that, it would just be too cool to me.

Well its not like it will end up being Sarajevo 2.0 not in terms of games success but in infrastructure legacy. Last year I was all into Lviv presenting a bid for a 2030 games, but war really changes how things develope, and even if ukraine in an strangely fantastic scenario manages to win russia and for some strange reason china, india and the new russian government allows russia (worlds largest country) to be seized of their own goods (without leading to a fascist russia), and for another reason that whole money doesnt go directly into NATO but for ukraine, doubt an olympics would be on the table. Is like saying afghanistan, syria, sudan or vietnam should have hosted the olympics because of their symbolic belic victories, there just doesnt exist the conditions.

Even if Ukraine does achieve military victory (and I’m really not optimistic), seizing Russian assets won’t happen, unless a second Versailles Treaty with all its disastrous consequences is desired.

I hardly think swiping up a couple hundred billion from Russian oligarchs would replicate the treaty of versailles.  Hell, theyve earned it over the course of the years.  Seeing a couple hundred oligarchs magically go bankrupt over the course of the next few years would be the worlds smallest violin by a long shot.  Furthermore, if there is a nation that has absolutely earned isolation, sanctions, and Morgenthau Planning in spades, it is Russia.  My sympathy is quite minimal.  This isnt just a Putin problem, this is a Russia problem.  They will have to pay as well.  Oligarchs wont cover everything.  They can either do it willingly, or forcefully........there are economic means to implement forceful repatriations too.  They can kick and scream all they want.  We have the economic tools to forcefully institute repatriation, and we should use them.

That thinking is exactly what led to Versailles. There must be a dialogue with a post-fascist Russia, even if it today is hard to imagine that there will be such a state with genuinely cooperative people at all levels of society.

Coming back to Lviv Olympics…by the time this could be politically possible, there will not be enough snow left in the Carpathians. A Kyiv Summer bid a few decades down the road however…

Realistic it's very unlikely - rebuilding starts with homes, schools, hospitals.   Bobsleigh tracks and curling rinks won't be high on the agenda.

Sarajevo bid themselves for 2010 but it was just too soon and as much as a games bid can provide hope for a recovering city and country, it can't stage the games.   We've seen too with Christchurch in NZ too that although the idea of a Commonwealth Games forming part of the rebuilding process (following an earthquake in this case) in reality that just isn't even on the agenda.   Cities have greater priorities and can't afford to take on the potential debt.
