/\/\ So, does Russia drop down to bronze?  Or does Canada move up?  See at bottom.  Still another decision.  Seems like they don't quite have the whole shebang ready.
Why don't they just wait for the World Figure Skating Champs in Boston in March?  It'd be more appropriate there.

It will be at the Trocadéro on August 9.

See my corrected post?  It seems the matter for the bronze is unresolved.  They still haven't decided whether Russia drops down to bronze OR, Canada moves up.  (This was one of the dumbest moves ever--just to add one more event to the WOGs.)

Well, I posted my post 2 minutes before you edited your post. In any case, on June 9, a medal ceremony is planned at the Trocadéro for all the athletes who have recently been re-awarded Olympic medals. If new names were to be added to the list before this date, there is no doubt (for me) that they will also receive their award on June 9. And if for bronze it's not yet 100% resolved before June 9, well we'll see.

2022 Olympic US figure skating team finally received its gold medals, more than 2 years after competing:

Still say it should've all waited 'til Milan 2026. Just would've been more fitting.

They've already waited 2.5 years.  They shouldn't have to wait another 1.5 years.  They got their medals at an Olympics, so that's a fitting gesture, IMO.  I'd rather see this than for them to overshadow the 2026 competition.

Have you noticed how absolutely everyone forgot about the very existence of Russia during the Olympics? Not only did no one complain about their absence, but I even have the impression that we completely forgot that this country existed (if we focus purely on sports news around the world of course). A great defeat for Putin.

Darja Varfolomeev, our gold gymnast today, was born in Russia (has partly German descent) and only moved to Germany five years ago at 12 without speaking the language.

Today at the victory ceremony, she sang our national anthem loud and proud. She is probably very relieved not to live in that country anymore.

We have a bit of the same thing in France with Anastasiia Kirpichnikova, who competed with the Russian colors until her naturalization in 2023 ; since then she represents France. She is a swimmer, trained since 2019 by Philippe Lucas (the coach of a certain Laure Manaudou), so she already had some ties with France for a few years. I had watched some videos of a TV report (I think) which showed her preparation for Paris 2024, we clearly felt her freed from a weight and relieved. Her very beautiful silver medal obtained just behind Ledecky showed it.

I think they were one of the "elephants in the room."  Everyone is glad that the Games were not used by Putin as a platform but at the same time, the great sporting nation that they are--granted that they CHEAT when they don't have to--I sort of feel sorry for their athletes.  But their absence is someone else's gain--and the party will go on regardless.
One depressing bit of news I heard -- that Russia's prisons are now nearly empty because they've sent the criminals to the Ukraine front as cannon fodder and so, of course, they have started again, ILLEGALLY detaining foreigners as "spies, etc., etc. -- as there is now a lot of room in their prisons to house these ILLEGALLY detained persons.  What a sick, vicious society.

what are the odds donal trum attempts to intervene to have russia at LA28 in its full capacity

I think it'll all depend on a decisive outcome w/ Ukraine.  Now that Sturm'n'drumpf will be back as C-i-C, I wonder how we will resolve our standing with NATO and Ukraine!!  I reaslly hope the Pentagon, the DOJ and Biden are formulating plans to declare martial law and arrest the whole MAGA gang before Christmas!

If not, this is what I want to see in the State of the Union address in February!!

Maybe you should see some of those Taiwanese legislative brawling footage back from the 1990s when the nation was learning how to be a democracy. I can't see what you just say as being far fetched now...

I wouldn't mind seeing this as well, but I think the reality is Trump will halt all aid to Ukraine and as a result, within two years (well before the Olympics) Russian tanks will be in the streets of Kiev and the war will be over. Would that lead to the Russian ban being continued? Actually, I think with a resolution, no matter how bad it is, the IOC would say grudgingly that peace has prevailed and Russia would be allowed back in to the IOC's good graces.

well before the Olympics

If Putin's past behaviour is anything to go by he'll wait until the Olympics. Perhaps Milan '26.

Georgia invasion, Beijing 2008; Crimea invasion, Sochi 2014; Ukraine invasion, Beijing 2022.

There's a pattern.

he really does treat the IOC with the kind of arrogant contempt they deserve.

gets a lot of milage out of humiliating them at every turn and then playing the victim when they retaliate (remember those valieva photo-ops?). always careful, though, to dangle some promise of future cooperation to ensure the IOC is working for him no matter what they do.

i wish our autocrat was ever that canny.
