Sadly, yesterday events feel like the seed of something much, much worse, was planted. Not necesarily from Russia's side as well, but for other countries with similar ambitions (China with Taiwan, North Korea with SK, etc. )

After Afghanistan humilliation (pretty much Vietnam 2.0), the enemies of the West have obviously concluded and even say aloud that we're in our weakest moment. And like the saying goes, "When the cat is away, the mice will play". And, to be fair, they're not too far from the truth. The United Nations has failed as an institution, much like the old League of Nations, and its an organization where, no matter what the majority says, only what a couple of countries say will matter (China, Russia, the US). Also, the lack of unity and decisiveness in the EU member countries regarding what actions should had been taken regarding a country with a previous experience of doing the same thing with Georgia was laughable at best.

The west needs to pull itself together and show strength toward people who has obviously demonstrated they don't care if the world burns.

Yeah, but how likely is that really, though.

Well, more recently after WW2, Germany was not invited again until I believe Oslo 1952.  Same thing with Japan.  So, none of this "innocent ahtletes competing under the neutral "Olympic" business."  You're NOT WELCOME until you get out of Ukraine, respect other sovereign nations' rights.  Russia, in all its forms, has (ab)used the Olympic movement long enough!!

After WW2 a bipolar world was established and both poles had no issue with keeping Germany/Japan out in 1948.

Now, the aggressor is one of those poles itself, even if this bipolar system does not exist anymore (which is basically what Putin never really accepted).

That’s worrying. I pray she’s okay.

Is it possible to get the UK or NZ consulates to inquire?

My Aunt and Uncle are trying to  find things out but the authorities are useless. Protestors are normally arrested and then released some days later having been 'worked up"

There is a very large sentiment in Russia currently that attacking Ukraine is wrong but stopping it from within is near impossible.

Can't believe Russia will be competing at the Paralympics next week. The IPC should ban them

I wonder if Ukraine will be able compete at the Paralympics. Unless they decided not to.

Here‘s an idea: punish those that created the „mammoth challenge“. Ban them, their entourage and anyone who represents them, under state or Olympic Committee flag.

And stop the meaningless messaging.

Incredibly brave thing to do. I really hope he's ok.

FIS has now cancelled all remaining skiing world cups planned in Russia this season, some already for this weekend with international athletes on site but frantically trying to get home.

I think it's time for the IOC to call a spade a spade.  With Russia waiting until the WOGs were over, big bully Russia has attacked the weaker Ukraine for no credible reason.  So, leading up to Paris 2024, Russia -- as did the aggressor nations of both World Wars I and II -- who were NOT invited in both SOGs and WOGs immediately following the cessation of hostilities,

This is almost like 1939 Nazi Germany again.

Discuss.

They need to be frozen out and isolated. Apartheid South Africa is the precedent here.

If Bach was president in the 70s we'd have had a team called SAWOA - South African White Olympic Athletes.

Strip Russia and Belarus of sporting events and ban their flags, IOC urges

Following a meeting of the Executive Board, the IOC has also resolved that no Russian or Belarussian national flags should be displayed at any sporting events.

Russia's flag and anthem are already banned from major events such as the Olympics, Paralympics and any World Championship organised by a World Anti-Doping Code signatory as part of sanctions imposed over the cover-up of a state-sponsored doping programme.

This should be extended to all other events, the IOC has decried, and called for Belarus' flag and anthem to be banned as well.

While Belarus was able compete under its flag at Beijing 2022 and Tokyo 2020, several National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus (NOCRB) officials - including President Viktor Lukashenko - were banned from the Games over allegations of discriminating against athletes who took part in anti-Government protests.

Viktor's father Alexander, the Belarusian President and the former NOCRB leader, was also banned.

Following weeks of tension, Russian forces have launched a three-pronged assault on Ukraine, partly through Belarus and with Belarusian support.

Hundreds have already been killed in the violence.

The invasion has widely been condemned, including by United Nations secretary general António Guterres, who attended Beijing 2022 and has close ties to the IOC.

Several sporting events have already been stripped from Russia, including the UEFA Champions League final, all remaining International Ski Federation World Cup legs, a Formula One Grand Prix and FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The IOC's latest intervention may force other IFs which have been slower to act, such as the International Volleyball Federation and International Swimming Federation, into making a decision.

Russia is scheduled to host both the World Swimming Championships (25m) and Men's Volleyball World Championship later this year.

More follows.

IOC EB urges all International Federations to relocate or cancel their sports events currently planned in Russia or Belarus

The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) reiterated today the IOC’s strong condemnation of the breach of the Olympic Truce by the Russian government and the government of Belarus through its support in this. The respective UN resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 2 December 2021 by consensus of all 193 UN Member States. The Olympic Truce began seven days before the start of the Olympic Games, on 4 February 2022, and ends seven days after the closing of the Paralympic Games.

The IOC EB today urges all International Sports Federations to relocate or cancel their sports events currently planned in Russia or Belarus. They should take the breach of the Olympic Truce by the Russian and Belarussian governments into account and give the safety and security of the athletes absolute priority. The IOC itself has no events planned in Russia or Belarus.

In addition, the IOC EB urges that no Russian or Belarussian national flag be displayed and no Russian or Belarussian anthem be played in international sports events which are not already part of the respective World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) sanctions for Russia.

At the same time, the IOC EB expresses its full support to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for the upcoming Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.

The IOC EB expresses its deep concerns about the safety of the members of the Olympic Community in Ukraine and stands in full solidarity. It notes that the special IOC task force is in contact with the Olympic Community in the country to coordinate humanitarian assistance where possible.

The IOC EB asks the task force to continue to closely monitor the situation and to keep the IOC EB informed and updated, also with regard to potential amendments of today’s resolution.

The anthem and flag bans are too easy to mock now. I really don't think they should even bother with that "sanction" anymore, even as part of a package.

As it is, this package is basically what we got after the Sochi doping scandal.

I'm sorry, but I think we need to go further. Russia needs to be banned and whilst Russian athletes will be collateral damage that is the lesser of two evils now.

/\/\  I thought that too.  And if Russian athletes still want to compete on the world stage, maybe they should DEFECT to Ukraine, etc. -- if those countries will have them!

I still say Johnny Weir (w/ his Russian husband) should oversee all diplomatic negotiations between all parties now.  Goooo JOHNNY!!

C'mon FIVB -- announce you're going to move this year's Men's Volleyball World Championships to North America or Italy or Japan.
