Can I just throw in this little timebomb

So Victoria cancels the 2026CG over the total claimed overall cost of $7.5 billion ($2 billion infrastructure/$1 Billion housing/$4.5 billion "games operations")

Brisbane 2032 is currently costed/budgeted at $7.1 billion

$7.1 bill so far, and that's only what has been promised for infrastructure and facility upgrades. The security Nd running costs are what blew out Victoria's bid at the Comm Games. Multiply those costs by up to a factor of five and yes that is the Olympics by way of a comparison. Anticipate a bill somewhere north of $30 bil by 2032. Someone said that the city gets the broadcast royalties. Not actually true, the broadcast rights are paid to the IOC who split some of that royalty money with the Organisation Committee.

Anyway that said, I believe that the Andrews' Government have made the right call. We are in the midst of a housing crisis, cost of living crisis, builders going broke and in short supply amidst one of the biggest infrastructure builds in Victoria's history. It was a good and pragmatic call, and I don't often give governments that much credit. It would have been grossly irresponsible to stage a $7 billion, 12 day long sports festival when the state's finances are under severe pressure and we are undergoing already major infrastructure builds to support a booming population.

Good call Dan ;)

As much as I love any multi-sport event, no matter how international or regional, if it was budgeted for $2bil and going to cost upwards of $6bil, tripling the cost to the taxpayer, I am saddened to agree that yep the right call was made. Even if held in Melbourne for upwards of $4bil (as was mentioned in the press conference) is still doubling of the budget, and that's a bunch of new trains, housing, hospitals, schools that wouldn't get funded.

Moving on from that decision, I wonder, with 3 years to go, if any other city will pick it up. If the costs were right, as was looked at, Melbourne could've hosted with all of the venues (bar an athletes village). Can anywhere else do this in such a short time, being that whichever city hosts it won't have budgeted any costs for it?

Commonwealth Games Federation received only eight hours’ notice of cancellation

The Victorian government made decisions “which have added considerable expense” – including introducing more sports, an additional regional hub, and changed venue plans – “often against the advice” of the the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Games Australia, according to a CGF statement.

They are disappointed they were given just eight hours’ notice of Victoria’s cancellation of the 2026 games. They are also disappointed the government did not consider “discussing the situation to jointly find solutions prior to this decision being reached”.

“Up until this point, the government had advised that sufficient funding was available to deliver the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games.”

I can think of one but that would involve a certain former britsh colony that does not make part of the commonwealth and is a global super power (for the time being) (Los Angeles, USA?). If they can relax the rules for this emergency, this could actually save these games. Other than that, only a lunatic dictatorship, i belive.

A high-ranking event industry official said the Victorian government had been repeatedly warned of a cost blow out by hosting the Commonwealth Games in regional areas.

“But the Victorian Government wouldn’t be told,” they said. “With the Games being hosted in so many different regional places, the cost was going to be five times the amount [of it being hosted solely in Melbourne].”

A case in point was the proposal of building a temporary velodrome in Bendigo when there is already an international velodrome at John Cain Arena in Melbourne.

“Event industry professionals always had eyebrows raised about why you would leave so many world class venues empty,” a source said. “They had all the infrastructure in and around Melbourne…”

“It was done to get votes for the election in regional Victoria, and so now, the actual cancelling is a smart political move, no one is fussed…but the sports will care…”

Andrews arrogance killed the Games

Who hosts now? Canada?

Doubtful. Canadians seem less invested in the event than Australia is.

I expect to see the entire CG fold.

I'm sad however that the Andrews Govt stuffing this up might harm the legacy of 2006 - Melbourne did an incredible job back then and it would be a shame if this overshadows that .

The CGF rightfully rips the corrupt Vic govt a new one!

https://www.commonwealthsport.com/news/3594069/response-to-victoria-government-2026-commonwealth-game-host-withdrawal

The reasons given are financial. The numbers quoted to us today of $6 billion are 50% more than those advised to the Organising Committee board at its meeting in June.

These figures are attributed to price escalation primarily due to the unique regional delivery model that Victoria chose for these Games, and in particular relate to village and venue builds and transport infrastructure.

Since awarding Victoria the Games, the Government has made decisions to include more sports and an additional regional hub, and changed plans for venues, all of which have added considerable expense, often against the advice of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA).

Going back 10 years

The Minister then tabled legal advice to GOLDOC in 2012, under the former Newman government, detailing the potential fallout of cancelling the Games.

“The advice ... provided at that time was that such an order would do immeasurable damage to the standing of the state of Queensland and the Gold Coast as a host city and that the damages that would be forced to be paid by the state if the Commonwealth Games were axed would be in excess of $1 billion,” she said.

So, Victorian taxpayers will be on the hook for another $1 billion plus eh, just like paying out $1.1 billion for not building a road

A road that was had a poor business case and had its contract deliberately booby trapped by the Libs. The road, eh?

Vic Labor govt is far from perfect bit the literally insane degenerates that are fixated on it and conspiracy theories make any alternative unviable.

Its funny, if you had to pick one Commonwealth city that could quickly host a Comm Games (or indeed an Olympic Games) it would be ......Melbourne!

Thats what I find perplexing.

Rejigging it to a mostly Melbourne event could have been done without losing face.

What i'm keen to know is not who's idea it was for us to host 2026 - but who's idea it was not to adopt the 2006 model and instead try to deliver a never before attempted regional model in only four years. Odd.
