Doesn’t this defeat the whole purpose of the torch relay? That in the end, the flame from Olympia did not live on in the cauldron. This is complete disregard of the Olympic flame. Well, given that it's underneath a balloon, and the obvious safety problems it could have if the ring was actually powered by fire, I can make some sense as to why they chose something safer and more sustainable for the environment. I'm a traditionalist, the cauldron ought to have fire: fossil or clean. Irrespective of size either. If the Paris org committee chose to go electric because of the whole balloon safety issue, then OK I can let that pass. But I don't want to see Milano/Cortana to follow suit, be lazy and use a Phillips Hue bulb for its cauldron. Same for LA. Quote
Kevin C. Posted July 27 Report Posted July 27 Beside that, I thought this was a unique opening ceremony. I loved that there were people, I loved the artistic integrity, as well as inclusion of an actual orchestra in the ceremony itself. I also loved how the olympic a them was sung in its original Greek lyrics. It felt weird to hear the English version during the Rio & Tokyo Olympics. Quote
Kevin C. Posted July 27 Report Posted July 27 Also, I understand when the olympic flag was hoisted, it was upside down. While embarrassing as it is, it could've been worse. At least this wasn't when Dominican Republic hoisted the olympic flag during the 2003 pan am games and they used a John Williams song from 1988 instead of the a them. Roggue looked piiiiiiised. Quote

I thought the 2012 contraption, which looked like a bunch of golf tees tied together, was trying way too hard to be different. Same with the ones in 2016 or 2020 (2021). But those at least used real fire. Quote

It’s a slap in the face honestly to him. I only heard of him today and I think this was perhaps the most awful snub one can have. The one who comes in second isn’t remembered (well maybe the one who comes in fourth isn’t remember in the Olympics) The Buffalo Bills ALMOST won the Super Bowl 4 years straight, but they didn’t. I doubt he could. If it is the one I saw, he was in a wheelchair. He barely touched the torch. Those that actually lit the cauldron took the flame from him. So he is remembered. Quote

So I missed the flotilla. The Olympic cauldron is interesting. I'm wondering what it'll look like in the daytime, when you can see the tether. I guess maybe I'll catch NBC's rerun of the ceremony later on this evening. I don't know what to think of the torch relay and lighting; it was more geared towards people watching it on TV/streaming, but what about the athletes at the Trocadero? They too had to watch the cauldron lighting from screens. I'd think they'd want to watch it right there in person. OK so I tried to watch NBC's rerun of the ceremony last night... and fell asleep! I watched some of the flotilla of athletes, and started thinking that I couldn't even really see what they were wearing, and there was all this talk of their outfits. I don't remember which country's delegation I saw last before I fell asleep. When I woke up, Celine was singing already. I thought to myself 'I SAW this already' and then went to bed. I guess I'll try to watch the entire ceremony from beginning to end sometime after the whole thing gets posted on Youtube. I assume right now in the US, because of NBC's exclusive rights to broadcast the show, the entire ceremony won't be posted until some time after the Games end, and of course while the Games are going on, other US news outlets are only allowed to show still photos and no moving clips of the Olympics. This morning I caught the women's cycling time trials. It's really too bad that it's raining right now in Paris, there were a number of skids and falls among the cyclists. Quote

Apparently, the Sudanese anthem was played in place of the newer, less known SOUTH SUDAN anthem, before their team played in Men's basketball! THank God, Macedonia changed its name from FYRoM to just Macedonia now! Quote
