Charles Coste should have lit that cauldron somehow, as he’s probably the only guy alive in Paris who was alive when the Olympics were last held there.

He was featured almost at the end of the torch relay, which was pretty decent

I was gonna say that.

They ban someone for rightfully telling this person to **** off, but not the person who literally told them to kill themselves.

I've always felt this forum and moderation board has been way too tolerant of this personage but there shouldn't be room for more doubts that there is an obvious bias.

Now watch me getting banned for dropping truth bombs.

In the words of Esmeralda from the Hunchback of Notre Dame...

JUSTICE!!!

True, but the paperwork to remove the word "Dominion" from the formal name of the nation has never been completed, and King Charles III, who visits Canada about once every three years, is still the head of state.

Actually it has. Canada's legal name has always been just 'Canada'. Dominion was a conferred title from the British government. It stopped being used by Britain in the late 1940s. By the Canadian government in 1951 and the legal paperwork and legislation surrounding the Constitution Act 1982 and the Canada Act 1982 all use the sole legal name as 'Canada'.

Chuck is in name only and we didn't actually follow any of the protocols or provisions that would normally be required. The governments just sidestepped all of that because of optics.

So not a flame, just a light.

Yes, but the thought about sustainability counts considering that cars (especially older ones) are still burning fuel and making our world hotter than hell.

Well...

All I can say is they could've chopped an hour off it all.

A great idea doesn't necessarily mean it will work in practice.

Not the worst opening ceremony...if you could call it that. But not one of the best...(maybe because I'm old and grumpy now.)

Then why didn’t he get to “light” it? He won’t go down in history as having actually lit it. It’s a slap in the face honestly to him. I only heard of him today and I think this was perhaps the most awful snub one can have.

The one who comes in second isn’t remembered (well maybe the one who comes in fourth isn’t remember in the Olympics) The Buffalo Bills ALMOST won the Super Bowl 4 years straight, but they didn’t.

Have you tried it?  Might be good for you and you might like it?   How was your 6-hour layover?

Totally agree, watching someone get banned while the actual problem is ignored is... quite something. Total trip.

Also now that the ceremony is over and I feel more comfortable questioning this - why the hell was "Shall we all move to the live chat now?" considered a bannable post? absolutely ridiculous.

Did you know that Canada's government still has a "Dominion Sculptor"?

I think it was just a desire to slow down the flow of messages that was just becoming too much, regardless of their content.

then it could have been presented as such, instead it came off as a total power trip

He didn't get to light the Olympic cauldron precisely because he's not young. If you're not Brat, you're history.

I only post here during "Games".

One reason for that is you!

It's ok for 2 or 3 weeks, but not more. I don't need people like you all the time.

Yeah, I purposely forgot.  But don't worry, the feeling is TOTALLY RECIPROCATED.

Yes, I suppose a fireless Olympic Cauldron was the inevitable conclusion of a trend that's been developing since Vancouver 2010

So interesting thing about the cauldron, it's powered by water and electricity and it incorporates 40 LED spotlights to illuminate the cloud created by 200 high-pressure misting nozzles. EDF were the ones who are powering the cauldron with this unique, clever and safe concept for both the environment and the people of Paris, as if it was actual fire, it'd be quite a disaster.
As for the cauldron being on display, it'll be on the ground in the daytime for people to come and see it. Then at night, it'll float gracefully back up to the Parisian skies for everyone to see!

I’m sorry? The cauldron doesn’t have real flame in it but just LED light mimicking a flame? Doesn’t this defeat the whole purpose of the torch relay? That in the end, the flame from Olympia did not live on in the cauldron. This is complete disregard of the Olympic flame.
