kevzz Posted July 26 Report Posted July 26 Judging by the train arson incidents today, I am worried the cauldron can be easily vandalised. Hope the balloon is strong enough to withstand an arrow or gun. Quote

Brekkie Boy Posted July 26 Report Posted July 26 Not sure how much the most expensive OpeningCeremony tickets were but would be surprised if people aren't asking for refunds. It was disrespectful to the fans, disrespectful to the athletes and disrespectful to the traditions of the Olympics. Quote

It was already mentioned in the speeches. Where were you? Formation of rings was just a London thing. Not a required element. But they did do the explanation with the one-by-one lighting of the rings on the Eiffel. (Now to do my mini-review for the ISOH Journal!!) Formation of the rings was part of every OC since at least Sydney. Or call it presentation of the rings. The green boxes in Rio, the wooden rings in Tokyo, the floating rings in Beiing 2008. Quote

TorchbearerSydney Posted July 26 Report Posted July 26 My sympathies to the creators for the weather- it look really wild and wet! There was some great moments.... as people say that can be edited into a 'wow' package....but the pacing was all off. I would give it a B....partly for ambition.... ejaycat Posted July 26 Report Posted July 26 I had jury duty today (and was dismissed!), so I rushed home and caught the ceremony from the middle, when the dude in the mylar hoodie was wearing the Olympic flag like a cape and started walking up to the stage. So I missed the flotilla. The Olympic cauldron is interesting. I'm wondering what it'll look like in the daytime, when you can see the tether. I guess maybe I'll catch NBC's rerun of the ceremony later on this evening. I don't know what to think of the torch relay and lighting; it was more geared towards people watching it on TV/streaming, but what about the athletes at the Trocadero? They too had to watch the cauldron lighting from screens. I'd think they'd want to watch it right there in person. Quote

kevzz Posted July 26 Report Posted July 26 I have a feeling the Paralympic opening ceremony will be much better than this as it will be in a more focused area from Champs Elysee to Place de la Concorde in a more stadium like setting. And thank goodness closing ceremony will be in a stadium. Quote

Altho I think they are much looser on that one now. And the whole Dove-wings thing has morphed into a "Nike"/angels concept. They've gotten more fluid with certain portions of the show. Quote

It just missed everything else. The sign of peace was done during the horse segment. Disappointing they didn't do a proper formation of the rings other than a token effort on the tower though they'd have probably got them upside down anyway. Quote

Even during the cauldron lighting, one could suddenly hear one of the commentators asking someone off-camera in English "Who's that girl? Who's that girl? Exactly, there were hardly any inserts on the screen during the ceremony. And the lack of PA announcements, especially during the final torch relay, was not helpful either. Once again, this proves to me that a ceremony that is stretched out across such a large "field of play" simply does not work. I hope that this will be a one-off occasion and Los Angeles will seriously reconsider staging their opening ceremony at two stadiums. Quote

You paid for tickets to an Opening Ceremony and got a couple of speeches, a song from Celine Dion and a migrane from strobe lighting. Will say as a TV viewer I'm glad for the furst time in ages the main cauldron was lit in it's final position but for the audience and athletes to sit out in the rain for 3.5 hours with no ceremony to watch to then not even see the lighting of the flame I think they'd have every reason to feel robbed and have been mis-sold their tickets. So I would still like to deny this point: when the tickets went on sale, it was publicly announced that the show would be spread out on the Seine and it was even specified on the Paris 2024 website. People knew what to expect when they bought these tickets. Quote

Yes that was very poor and having no rehearsal ckearly didn't help, though I think the final torchbearers usually don't form part of that anyhow. Quote
