"What did you think of that Michael?"

"It was....errr.....different...."

At the same time, the post-ceremony commentators on German TV are almost p*ssing themselves with praise for this ceremony. Felix Neureuther, formerly part of the German alpine skiing team, says that this has been the best show he has ever seen and it will be impossible to surpass it. To everyone his own, I guess.

I am still very underwhelmed. I gave them a chance to make something out of the new concept of this ceremony - but it fell flat way too many times. Even in sunshine, this would have been a hot mess. Only the silver horse segment (at least before it became too long and boring), the Eiffel Tower light show, the cauldron lighting and Céline Dion's appearance created truly iconic moments. The rest was disjointed and further harmed by the poor camera work. For me, it is a 3 out of 10. Je suis desolé. I am sure the Games themselves will become much better and more iconic than this.

I actually think this ceremony will look very good cut up for tomorrow's news bulletins.

But as a whole it's been incoherent and hasn't really clicked. Ambition overriding reality.

And the BBC's closing 30-45 second montage of the ceremony made it look amazing.

Everything was just too long/disconnected/muddled in reality.

I bet it looks amazing on the news which is about to start now too.

It always amazes me, all those years of preperations for the OC, over in just a few hours.

Usually there's not much more than 2 years of preparation for the opening ceremony, except maybe in Beijing 2008.

Loved this Opening Ceremony.

Loved the Cauldron even if it was the longest Cauldron lighting in Olympic history from when Nadal first received the flame.

No need for formation of the rings. The rings on the Eiffel Tower is already enough.

The formation of the rings was (sort of) part of the Eiffel Tower light show. There was a moment where only three of the five rings were visible and then the other rings were added. I believe at least that that was their "formation of the rings" segment. ;)

On an overcast night, would be a waste.

Sign of peace is NOT used in Olympic ceremonies.  It was already mentioned in the speeches.

Where were you?  Formation of rings was just a London thing.  Not a required element.  But they did do the explanation with the one-by-one lighting of the rings on the Eiffel.

(Now to do my mini-review for the ISOH Journal!!)

Kind-of. Anybody can stick a set of Olympic rings on a well-known landmark in their own time.

I wanted to a drone show presented by Canada's Soccer Team.

What? The arrivals from different entrances in Atlanta; the horsemen in Sydney; the flames in Athens; the rising LEDs in Beijing; the plant-life in Rio ...

And just to add up, the sign of peace was the Imagine part.

We had no doves of peace, though. Weren't those part of the ceremony until recently as well, at least in stylised form (since the Seoul 1988 dove barbecue)?

But I guess that, just like with that "You have to play Imagine, dammit!" madness, the IOC under Thomas 1976 is slowly throwing the real Olympic traditions under the bus. Just like they did already years ago with the Olympic values.

I did not realize they were so actors. They looked like they were so moved.  Better drugs.
