munichfan
Great start, then it went down REALLY REALLY badly after the parade. Congrats Korea, you pulled off the best one of the Asian bunch!
Ikarus360
I knew the moment they said this would be innovating and never done before, we should be frightened. The olympic ceremonies as we used to know them are never coming back, isn't it.....
Olympian2004
I can't believe what we have just seen. They must be joking. This makes Tokyo's opening ceremony trainwreck look like the Orient Express.

Shiruba98
That was horrible. Worst Olympic opening ceremony I've seen in a while.
JMarkSnow2012
Lots of jumping up and down to get round the low-key cauldron!
FYI
WTF! Did I miss something here?! Where was the "unprecedented-ness" of it?!
SkiFreak
Did their budget run out to build an actual cauldron?
Olympic Fan Darcy
I didn’t realise the snowflake was made up of the countries placards
Olympian2004
Paris 2024 will have a candle if this trend continues. Milan and Cortina will leave it at a burning match. Los Angeles should be worried.
munichfan
Somehow this was even more underwhelming than Tokyo. At least they had a cauldron and there were some very enjoyable sequences (I really liked the pictograms section, for example).
krow
that was...anti-climactic. i thought they were going to set an athlete on fire or something. 1

SkiFreak
Ok, time to get the games out of Asia. The last 3 OC installments were bland. Give me Lillehammer, Vancouver, Atlanta, London any day.

Olympic Fan Darcy
No cauldron? What the snowflake gonna float the whole 2 weeks?
yoshi
What the hell was that?! The cauldron is a torch plugged into a snowflake shaped copy of London's idea... that was a letdown. At least it means Xi can't say he did a better opening ceremony...
Brekkie Boy
Is that the cauldron? I know they've been getting smaller to be greener but sticking a hand held torch in a snowflake is ridiculous. Was expecting at least the snowflake to be lit. Anyway, well done Atlanta - you no longer have the worst cauldron ever. As for the ceremony - a better tone than Tokyo and you can't go far wrong relying on children in the absense of a big showcase spectacular. The parade though goes on far too long as always and I think viewers need more than 15 minutes to warm up for it - much better to front load the artistic part and then get through to the lighting of the flame quite quickly after.

Here's hoping that the quality of Beijing's OC is not reflective of the quality of the entire Games...
Kenadian
They could have at least lit a candle.

Nacholympic
No cauldron!! That's why it was "a never before" Short, simple, pandemic but good At least, much better than Tokyo.
JMarkSnow2012
With that LED tech, they could have rivalled Sochi. But they chose "modesty"
