Toronto 2036

Not sure if this is allowed but does anyone think Toronto will bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics? It would be 60 years since the last time Canada has hosted the Summer Olympics and would mark the first time the Olympics were in Canada.

Funny how 2032 was the least competitive race in modern times, and 2036 maybe the most competitive!

That's on the IOC. If you push the VP's personal favourite through years before a "normal" bidding cycle would even start, it ain't much of a surprise when the field is "less competitive".

That said, I do not see any realistic chances for a Toronto bid to happen. Vancouver faces significant opposition for 2030 - which would be a games with pretty much everything already in place. Talk about an Olympic stadium and so many other major venues that would be needed in Toronto and it becomes a really far stretch.

Public support issues aside, Toronto is one of those cities in the same category as the likes of New York, Hamburg, and Madrid, cities capable of hosting an Olympics, but do not have the need for that all important albatross the Olympic Stadium. The only way Toronto ever gets a stadium of that size and scope is for the NFL to come to town and that's just not happening.

Even though countries from Europe, Asia, and Africa are interested in 2036, I think a country from the Americas hosting 2036 wouldn't be too bad imo as long as the Vancouver 2030 bid dies down and Sapporo is given 2030 instead.

Now you may be wondering “But wouldn't Toronto hosting 2036 be too soon for the Americas after LA 2028?” Well think about this, Athens 2004, Turin 2006, and London 2012 happened, PyeongChang 2018, Tokyo 2020ne, and Beijing 2022 happened.

So LA 2028, Brisbane 2032, and Toronto 2036 wouldn't hurt. Then again Salt Lake City may want 2034 but just remember what I said about Athens and Turin.

Okay I just realize the gap for Turin and London is 7 years but it's still interesting to think about.

English & French may be the official languages in Canada, but the French part is mainly because of Quebec. Ontario (where Toronto is located) & the rest of Canada mainly speak English.

If we're also going to be looking at trends for this, like Athens/Turin, & Pyeongchang/Tokyo/Beijing - let's also keep in mind of the trend that the Summer Olympics has also never been away from Europe for more than 12 years. So after Paris 2024, that means that 2036 would be ripe for Europe. The IOC won't want to stay away from their home continent for longer than that. The only way that wouldn't happen, is if no solid European bid were to come forward for 2036. But Russia, maybe Turkey, or also maybe even Germany, I can see as making a play here.

Plus, another issue here can be public support. If Vancouver, which has many of the facilities already in place for a 2030 bid, are having cold feet (no pun intended), then how would it be for a city like Toronto where a lot would have to be invested, in a time where many citizens question nowadays if the Olympics are a wise investment. Either way, though, I don't see North America getting another Summer Olympics until at least 2040. And that also raises another question, can Vancouver host a Summer Olympics by then. Which by 2040, why not.

Surely Sky Dome's age and potential need for a replacement in the coming decades could resolve the stadium issue?

Toronto could effectively do an Atlanta by having a new Olympic stadium scaled down post Games to the size of Sky Dome (which would then be demolished if no longer a need for it).

The Blue Jays have opted to undertake a renovation of the Rogers Centre (aka Sky Dome) a replacement stadium that could be used as an Olympics Stadium isn't in the cards. It's NFL or bust for a new stadium.

rennovating the venue instead of demolishing the Rogers Centre seems like a good idea for the 2036 Olympics if Toronto is awarded.

For hosting baseball yes. A renovated Rogers Centre could not be the athletics stadium though.

Not sure following in the footsteps of Atlanta is a good comparison seeing that the Braves have since abandoned Turner Field and the Georgia Dome was bulldozed after just 25 years in use to build a more expensive stadium.

As noted, there are no plans to demolish Rogers Centre.  And remember who owns both the team and the stadium.  Different than in Atlanta where Turner Field was owned by the city and the county, so it gave them a lot more freedom with what to do with it.

Toronto can't be awarded the 2036 Olympics unless they bid for it.  And they can't bid for it unless they have a plan to host.  A renovated Rogers Centre is not it going to be a part of that plan.  When Stan Kroenke built SoFi Stadium, he didn't need to make any adjustments to make it work for the Olympics since track and field would be elsewhere.  Not the case in Toronto.  Even if they did build a new stadium - which now sounds like it's not in the cards - I doubt they would want to build a baseball stadium that could also work for athletics, specifically the 1 time it would need to serve that function.

I'd add to that the fact that owners of multi billion dollar sports teams don't want a stadium that either had an athletics track or is adaptable to one.

Toronto put on a highly regarded Pan Am Games in 2015 and there was lots of chatter that another Olympic bid would be forthcoming and it never happened in part due to the mounting costs required (it probably didn't help matters that the Pan Ams came a little more than a year after Sochi). Both the New norm and Agenda 2020 are designed to get cities like Toronto to throw their hats in the ring as the Golden Horseshoe can provide a base for a potential bid. Unfortunately, Toronto lacks some of the key venues like an Olympic Stadium and canoe/slalom course, both which have questionable legacies that neither the IOC or World Athletics seem to be willing to help out with and that keeps cities like Toronto and New York on the sideline among other issues.
