baron-pierreIV Posted December 28, 2021 Report Posted December 28, 2021 (edited) I just looked at the list of 2028 venues on Wikipedia. There aren't any listed for Boxing & Weightlifting. Haven't heard any official announcements from the IOC but good riddance awful sports. Next I'd remove would be Judo, Wrestling and Taekwondo. Enough of those combat sports!! So, as it stands, without the addition of other sports, 2028 will feature 28 sports. Edited December 28, 2021 by baron-pierreIV Quote
ulu Posted December 28, 2021 Report Posted December 28, 2021 The loss of all that eye candy in the Judo and Wrestling would be a tragedy. Quote

StefanMUC Posted December 28, 2021 Report Posted December 28, 2021 They‘re out for now (like Modern Pentathlon), but can still be reinstated if they do the reforms the IOC wants (but never implements for themselves). 1 Quote

If they were permanently off the schedule, the Microsoft Theatre could easily host sport climbing while badminton could be moved to the exhibition hall in the LA Convention Center vacated by boxing. Then volleyball could shift to the Galen Center. Makes the Olympics more compact. Quote

Galen Center is too small. Indoor Volleyball is big in Southern Cal since the teams are based in Anaheim. With that new Clippers arena, that's where Indoor Volleyball might go -- and still keeping the 18,000 capacity they had for the Anaheim Center (or whatever the current venue they have). The biggest following (both live and on TV) in a Summer Olympics are (especially for US audiences) are: 1. Athletics; (2). a close 2nd is Swimming; then (3) Gymnastics; (4) Basketball and (5) the Volleyballs - both Indoor and Beach. So Indoor Volleyball will be moved to either the Forum, in which case Gymnastics would be moved to the Intuit Dome; or vice-versa. With Indoor Volleyball requiring a lot of free space around its court, the Galen Center is too small for that. And Indoor Volleyball is peculiar in that it must have at least an--IIRC- 18m height clearance in FOP. Quote
Bear Posted March 20, 2024 Report Posted March 20, 2024 IOC EB confirms that as of right now boxing is still out of the LA28 sports programme, and will only be included if the various boxing national federations can agree to establish a new international federation (or if enough NFs agree to join World Boxing, I assume). It was also said that the IBA will have absolutely no official role in boxing's Olympic future, meaning there's no way it will ever be re-recognized by the IOC again. There is no set timeline or deadline for the establishment of a new IF, but in today's press conference the IOC Sports Director indicated that it should be before 2027. 1 Quote

For it to have a shot of still being added to 2028. Actually should be 2026 at the VERY LATEST to: (i) gain the proper number of spaces (80 to include both genders?) in the Village within the 10,500 max; (ii) for all the qualifying rounds in the international scene to play out in 2027 and early '28; and (iii) to get into LA28's ticketing system. They start selling tickets by July 2027. Probably could be accommodated at the Anaheim Convention Center or Walter Pyramid at LBS. That would then make 36 sports in ALL -- making it such a GIGANTIC event. Quote
StefanMUC Posted March 20, 2024 Report Posted March 20, 2024 There are 248 quota places in Paris, that might be reduced but certainly not to 80, if boxing is included at all. Quote

Kit responded that it should actually be before that, indicating that it should be 2026 at the very latest like you said. Quote

You completed your Expulsion% speedrun with a world record! See you never. They had to mess it up just when my country is with such a talented generation, what a shame. But hey, just the world just need to make World Boxing or something else happen for real then. Quote

In order to remedy this, the IOC needs to have a partner International Federation for boxing by early 2025." https://olympics.com/ioc/news/ioc-statement-on-cas-decision-regarding-withdrawal-of-recognition-of-iba 1 Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted February 26, 2025 Author Report Posted February 26, 2025 So . . . Boxing is back in for '28, with World Boxing in charge. IOC officially recognises World Boxing The IOC didn't even wait for its Meeting in Greece next month! (My secret feeling is that they did this to pre-emptively circumvent the summit when Twampon and Putin will meet and by which time IBA would probably have leaned on Putin to get Twampon to lean on USOPC and LA28 to stick with IBA over WB.) Also, as I have suspected all along, Boxing will play at the Kia Forum in Inglewood! Quote
