Those surveyed across British Columbia are virtually split over the possibility of returning the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to Vancouver and Whistler in 2030, after hosting for the first time in 2010. According to a new survey by Leger, 34 per cent of respondents across the Canadian province from December 17 to 19 said they […]

Those aren't good numbers at all. And thinking that the 31% who are undecided or neutral, are going to be a "key group in understanding how to engage", is totally foolhardy. Those are the people who can give literally give two sh!ts either way, & if you do manage to make some headway with SOME of those people, those are the ones that never show up to any referendums polls anyway.

Meanwhile, SLC has full support in the high 80%'s. The wild card here is really Sapporo. I think that's where the IOC's attention will focus on for the other bid to try & lock-in a double. If not, then SLC 2030 it is.

Guess, this thing is dead then? I can't see them swing public opinion in favor of their plans with Beijing up on the horizon. I guess it's just waiting for Sapporo now. When will they publish their survey? In case, public support in Japan is underwhelming Bach will try to lock in SLC sooner rather than later, probably by February.

This is the Achilles heal of the IOC'S reforms. There is no attempt whatsoever to engage the public at a grassroots level about why a city should bid for the Olympics.

At this point, why would they attempt to?  They have at least 1 city, hopefully 2, that is interested in 2030.  If Vancouver's residents aren't interested, tough to get them engaged.  And they of all people don't need to be told why their city should bid for the Olympics.  Because it's not like they don't have the facilities (as opposed to Calgary which couldn't keep most of theirs maintained)

Calgary had bid previously for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games before they dropped out and ended up to Milano-Cortina, Italy. I think Calgary might wait until 2038.

Vancouver is tough for a variety of reasons. First, it's a city of transplants: many people don't have a long term stake in the community and the city's prestige. Second it's a city with relatively high housing prices and lots of homelessness and drug addiction, so people will inevitably question spending money on sports vs cleaning up Hastings Street.

How do you explain Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to tourists? It’s complicated... - Vancouver Is Awesome

And then there's the fact that many people feel both Whistler and Vancouver are already too gentrified and touristy for their own good. Is being an entrepot for Alaskan cruise ships really worth it for the average Canuck in the city? Vancouver has the same problems with tourism that Barcelona has, just on a smaller scale. For people who feel that way, using the Olympics to attract yet more tourists to Vancouver would be a mistake even if it works.
