Paris 2024 Cauldron

Now that the massive outdoor Opening Ceremony has been approved by the IOC and announced to the world, attention turns to the staging of the Opening Ceremony which will be the biggest in Olympic history, 6 km long and 600,000 spectators.

The Cauldron in recent Games has become much smaller and very “internal”, hidden away inside the Stadium where only those present there can see it.

I hope Paris can buck this trend and do something mind blowing which is visible to most, not the few.

In this video from France24, at the end the reporter Peter O’Brien from France 24, implies an obvious place for it - on top of the Eiffel Tower.

That truly would be an incredible sight.

The render in the Paris 2024 shows tephe Eiffel Tower big and prominent and towering over what looks like the final ceremony area.   With 600,00 watching the Opening Ceremony, wouldn’t the Eiffel Tower cauldron be seen by the whole city?

I guess is it posssible to have an environemtally friendly flame that can be seen by many from a long way away?

OK, let's see you replace all that comm/ equipment with a silly "flame"  -- not to mention all the contracts that will be broken by putting a "flame"/gas lines in there?  U're nuts.

Those Olympic rings on the Tower picture look rather fiery, with the brightness noticeably varying across the rings. Are they trying to tell us something? Tbh after the 'rings on fire' ceremony trope I'm surprised nobody's taken the small step to 'rings as cauldron' yet...

Actually, it's happened . . . at LA 1984.

well spotted Yoshi.   Baron, yes LA was great - Igot up in the early hours and watched that LA flame lighting the rings on its way up to the Cauldron in 84, it was a fantastic moment after a beautiful ceremony.

Flaming Olympic Rings on the Eiffel Tower …. that would be something to see too.

You might be on to something ……. .   Often the big rings are gold in colour with just the lighting,  but yes they can sometimes be lit up in flames.

Actually, Athens 2004 also set alight Olympic Rings in the stadium lake.

London 2012 came close to flames with overhead rings showering sparks

The parade of nations on the Seine wil come to a stop at the Lena Bridge before the Trocadero for the remainder of the Opening Ceremony.

Now the Lena Bridge, the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower are all in the one straight line of sight.

The Eiffel Tower looks exactly in a straight line down across the Lena Bridge to the Trocadero.

This googlemap image is not official but it illustrates how prominent and close the Eiffel Tower is to where the Opening Ceremony has it’s protocols and finale, incldung the raising of the flag and lighting of the Cauldron.

That’s the Lena Bridge close to the Eiffel Tower and in a direct line past the athletes in the boats to the Trocadero - all close to each other.

The logo flame sits nicely on the top of the Eiffel Tower for now in these musings, but where it will atcually be on the night is going to keep us guessing for the next 2.5 years until we get some firm intel.

Actually, 2 bridges over, they should start the Relay coverage at the Alma tunnel where Princess Di died ... and just about there is the statue of Lady Liberty

. . . where it would be just as naturel to have her holding a real live FLAMING TORCH -- without removing all the comm. equipment on top, which the OBS will be needing anyway.

Absolutely yes, definitely can picture a Cauldron flame burning brightly for all to see on top of the biggest and most famous tower at the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony …..

The olympic flame projected on the Eiffel tower seems likely to be LED lighting and they could add the cauldron in front of the Eiffel Tower which is possible.

Actually, could be nothing, but the top of the Eiffel Tower in these renders of the Opening Ceremony appear to show some sort of circular platform right on top.

Now, should it be a platform, what might go on it  -  and how would they light it?

As I said it could be nothing, but it sure looks very different to how the actual top of the Eiffel Tower looks now  ……..

God, you guys are so anal-obsessive-compulsive about every little detail in artists' renderings.  No wonder Qanon and anti-vax theories abound.   Those are F*CKING general renditions 3 years ahead of the event!  And if it's going to be a surprise, then they wouldn't put them there.  Oh, look -- there's an orange banner over there!!  That must be where Monsieurs Trump and Kennedy, Jr., will re-emerge as Rulers of the World!!

One advantage is that we surely won't have another London style guessing game, as you can't just add large objects to the Eiffel Tower without anyone noticing ;)

Exactly, it sure will be noticed :)

It’s such a world famous and Parisian landmark and it’s tall imposing presence literally on top of the final location of the final segments of the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony at the Trocadero and Lena Bridge, kind of begs for inclusion doesn’t it?

Hanging the big golden Olympic Rings on the Eiffel Tower seem almost a certainty.

Whether a Cauldron is going to somehow be included in the Eiffel Tower remains to be seen but it will be fun guessing.

After watching a waterfall come cascading down  the middle of a packed grandstand at the Sydney 2000 Opening Ceremony and then the Cauldron rise up from a pond above the orchestra pit, anything is possible.  It was a bit surreal, hard to believe it was happening, until the Cauldron got stuck and then the wonder gradually turned to squirming for 3 minutes or so —— then thank goodness the Sydney Cauldron headed on up to it’s throne at the top of the Olympic Stadium.

Paris is sure to do something beautiful and eye-poppingly memorable wherever the Cauldron is placed and what shape it is, environmentally friendly, etc.

The 2024 cauldron will--like Athena-- erupt from the tete of Tony Estanguet!!

I think Paris cauldron should follow Rio's and Tokyo's examples: visible but simple, small but in the concept.

Paris 2024 will do what works for them.  I really wish all the newbies here refrain from second-guessing what the Pari 2024 or Milan 2026 COJOs will be doing.  even though they may come here and read, they will do what works for them -- and/or vetted by the IOC.  So posts like those above are really unnecessary and ineffective in the long run.

Or you could just let the say what they want and you can scroll passed it.
