Now, watching this discussion about Erdogan this or Imamoglu that. I found funny how this discussion went to the opposite spectrum when so far, it's looking Istanbul as the (early) frontrunner of this race. Practically we saw representatives of both national and local level being on link with Bach and representatives of the IOC. In recent weeks, this has been hyped not just by Turkish, by a good part of the "third world"

If Germany flops again with the bid process (which it's looking likely with their recent prospect now discussing which olympics you want for different years and places lol), Istanbul may surprise.

A bit at a loss........the Lira is now at a stunning 27 to the dollar.  Thats profoundly shocking for that currency given how much value it has lost over the past decade.  But.......in a country like Turkey, with leadership like Turkey, theyll still do it.

It's not just the financial risk, it's the security risk as well. A German or for that matter any Western European bid (London especially) would clear the field quickly. I'd even put a second bid from Seoul or a bid from China ahead of Istanbul at this point. The IOC wants safe bids.

I like Poland a lot too myself, and I could certainly get behind a Seoul bid.  Would IOC view Poland as a dangerous bet because of Russia geopolitics?  Hopefully not, I think they could swing it

Perhaps that question is better served in the Poland 2036 thread. But the key word in their post is "Western" Europe, which Poland is not.

And as someone else poised it in the Poland thread just yesterday, maybe they could be a good "back-up plan" if nothing else solid from Europe materializes. But that's still a long ways off, though, since the IOC still has yet to get a 2030 host to sign on the dotted line.

I think they have a great opportunity to host the 2027 European Games and the 2036 Olympics and Paralympic Games. If Istanbul wins 2036, it would be four years after Turkey co-hosts the UEFA Euro 2032 with Italy.

Can't imagine saying something like that if not being serious, or they're just trolling. Either way, though, it's in bad taste. Totally sounds like something a chumpanzee would say.

Apart from that, Iceman’s been a pretty decent poster here, so I’m prepared to give the benefit of the doubt.

Nevertheless, that’s poisonous Nazi crap and was right to be called out.

So the opposition was victorious in local elections yesterday, including keeping the mayor of Istanbul.

There’s hope for a democratic post-Erdo Tu/ürk/iye/ey after all.

I was reading an article last night, how Istanbul has been ranked as being the "least livable major city" in Europe, due to it's unsustainable growth, chaotic traffic, along with very poor urban planning. And if officials don't act soon, Istanbul could wind up looking like New Delhi, with heaps of trash everywhere. Not very good points if you're a city wanting to mount a(nother) Olympic bid.

The traffic is diabolical.  Straight up diabolical.  I've ridden/driven in plenty of cities, but Istanbul is head and heels above the worst.  Yet, I never saw any accidents the whole time I was there.  Plenty of near misses, but no fender benders.  The metro, which is slammed in itself, is still a godsend in comparison.  Surprisingly efficient.  And given the price gauging of Turkish taxi drivers, you'd almost be a fool to not take the metro regardless of circumstances.  I was there in 2017 when it was like 8 TL to the dollar and I thought I was getting away with highway robbery.  I........was wrong, lol.  Im a big history buff but after 10 days it was time to go.  That said.......still think itd be a nice option for 2036.  They've been bridesmaid for awhile.

And still they got the European Games with the swimming and gymnastic events.

Now going to the other spot, the chaos of Istanbul is "understandable" considering the quick development of both the city and Turkey in recent years (Economic growth, the hub of immigration, the population migration and growth). They need to resolve this soon.

It helped changing of leader from the CHP. Having a perennial loser like Kilicdaroglu after losing 15 consecutive elections (If i'm right) only hurt the party (For 13 years he was in the chair lol)

Eh . . . after WC 2030 - 1/3rd of that in a muslim country.

Then 2034, an entire WC back in another conservative muslim country . . .

Will Olympics 2036 survive a 3rd muslim-set (and VERY EARTHQUAKE-prone) country?

u missed a point. Turkiye is not a muslim country. we dont have a state religion like saudi or qatar, we are a secular country. and if we win it wont be the same as they did with Fifa bribes (coughing). lol

Well till 2036 most probably the earthquake may happen and the city will safe and wont have any risks, yet already many of the neighbourhoods are ready for that disaster ( yet not enough if u think Istanbul is 20 million people metropolis). it would be an amazing opportunity to rebuild it with olympics also ( like Tokyo use it as a trumphcard)

also on the contrary of europe we have been ruled by conservatives for 25 years but now the polls and local elections shows the socialists and democratics getting favor and this will be last election of Erdoğan so u can say bye to those ruling party guys. Also another nice timing to say and welcome Turkiye by west, but not sure if we wanna get that train again. Most probably we will be a nation like a Nato member also a Brics with in EU Customs but doing business with others also. Thats the natural role of Turkiye, balance the poles of the world.

And i know u like ceremonies. What may be better then to see an opening ceremony in a stadium open to Bosphorus and all atractions will be held both places. A athlete friendly but city wide one..

++ we have the best baklava and doner.. lol

Yet i dont see the rich arabs will be happy about Istanbul doing this before them. So they may invest like 100 Billions usd at 36 games to get it before.

A bit cynical to hope for an earthquake where likely tens of thousands could die to happen so that you can rebuild the city.

cause otherwise its impossible to make Istanbul to liveable city. for 25 years govenment push Istanbul edges to make it bigger for money now it becomes an unbearble place to live. And only the valuable areas just renovated. Also they blame the Municipilty president for not making the city ready while they rule 20 years in Istanbul and 25 in country. We call it political İslam hypocricy

++not tens. but 100s thousands.

He stated that Istanbul will be promoted for the 2036 Olympics. Ekrem İmamoğlu said, "We will tell the story of Istanbul's sports journey in this building. We have exhibitions inside, we have an exhibition that tells the story of a beautiful Istanbul's sports and Olympic past. We have another exhibition where our valuable artists living in Paris take place. We also have a venue that tells the story of the infrastructure process in Istanbul." Istanbul house' in Paris to promote 2036 Olympic bid

Also the first promotional film for Istanbul's 2036 Olympics to be used in international campaigns has been shared. The short film, which uses the slogan "The Door Opening to the Future", depicts different places and moments from Istanbul. Not much about sports and olympics ( probably cause of not being an official candidate yet and ristrictions ) but i find it cute, especially seeing an orange stray cat gives me a big smile :D

Enjoy.
