FYI Posted November 18, 2022 Report Posted November 18, 2022 I've been saying that all along. If nothing worthwhile materializes from Western Europe, then Istanbul is the "wild card". Since, with the exception of South Korea, everything else outside of Europe is either subpar, at best, or doesn't align at all with the strict, current IOC time-window mandate (or both), or is just downright delusional territory. Plus, surely the IOC will want the 2036 edition as far away as possible from the 2032 host. 2 Quote
StefanMUC Posted November 18, 2022 Report Posted November 18, 2022 By 2036, Erdo will be gone most likely. That could be a plus, depending in what state he leaves the country and who comes after him. Which is also begging the question if the IOC would be willing to take the risk of not knowing what will happen once he‘s gone. Quote

AustralianFan Posted December 14, 2022 Author Report Posted December 14, 2022 Not a good look for Turkey’s Olympic hosting chances when the opposition leader and the main rival to the president is arrested for cricising public officials. This is also another huge blow to Istanbul 2036’s chance and is part of a long line of human rights abuses by Erdogan. The timing could not have been worse. With the IOC’s strategic Advisory Committee on Human Rights having just been announced last week following the recent long-awaited official launch of the IOC Human Right’s Framework, here we now have the Mayor of Istanbul and leading the 2036 bid jailed for “insulting public figures” is another sign that Istanbul is as far away as ever from hosting. fatixxx Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 Erdogan says courts will fix any mistakes after Istanbul mayor's sentencing ISTANBUL, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that the courts would correct any mistakes in an appeal process after the jailing of Istanbul's opposition mayor, and in the meantime Turks had no right to ignore legal rulings. In his first direct comments on Wednesday's conviction of Ekrem Imamoglu - a potential challenger to Erdogan who was sentenced to two years and seven months in prison and handed a political ban - Erdogan said he did not care who is the opposition candidate in next year's elections. Imamoğlu was procecuted for insulting public officials in 2019. "There's still no final court decision yet. The case will go to the Court of Appeals and the Court of Cassation," Erdogan said. "If the courts have made a mistake, it will be corrected. They're trying to pull us into this game." "There have been many court rulings that we have harshly criticised ourselves, but that doesn't give anyone the right to insult judges or to ignore court rulings," Erdogan told. source: Erdogan says courts will fix any mistakes after Istanbul mayor's sentencing | Reuters A mayor who is happy after hearing to be sentenced by court..
