Brisbane 2032 moves forward as it draws inspiration for a transformative Olympic and Paralympic Games vision

Credit: IOC Media Release

In the wake of the first on-site visit by the IOC) Coordination Commission, the IOC have advised that BOCOG have just included a public survey to their extensive consultative process.

The purpose of the survey is to help create “an inspiring vision” for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Interviews and workshops with some 1,000 stakeholders directly connected to the Games, including athletes, the sports movement and delivery partners, have already been taking place for a few weeks. Members of the Coordination Commission also contributed their insights in a dedicated session during the meetings.

In the link above is more information on the Public Survey in which Australians and international fans alike are invited to share their views on what Brisbane 2032 should encompass.

The survey is open until 20 June and can be accessed at: brisbane2032.org/vision.

Across three days of meetings of the Coordination Commission, discussions covered topics such as governance, operations, venues, sport, finance and commercial planning. The programme also featured visits to further Games sites in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, community engagement activities, including a dinner with sports, community, political and business leaders from the region, and a reception at Queensland Parliament. In addition, the Commission members visited Victoria Park, where a much-needed new stadium will be built for the long-term use of some of the city’s most popular sports teams, and which will also be used for the Olympic Games.”

“The Commission members were given an outline of key next steps in the Brisbane 2032 organisation. Following the successful conclusion of a 100-day independent review into Games infrastructure, the Queensland Government accepted more than 90 per cent of the recommendations to develop a sports venues delivery plan to benefit communities across the region.“

”This will now be subject to technical assessments from the respective International Sports Federations, the IOC and the International Paralympic Committee to determine venue use at the Olympic Games.”

So what are the citizens of Brisbane called?
- Brisbanese?
- Brisbanians?

- Brisbanites?

According to Wikipedia, the official demonym is Brisbanite, with Brisbanian also sometimes used.

In Sydney (and I expect Melbourne), we’d usually just say “Bloody Queenslanders”

I had a discussion on skyscrapercity about this about a year ago in their Brisbane 2032 thread (before the forum became a Trumpian troll infested shithole), and even Brisbanites couldn't agree what they're called.

America’s National Football League invests heavily in Australian Sporting Market

3 June 2025
“We are very ambitious in our quest to try and get Flag Football into Brisbane 2032”

“Flag Football is to American Football what Oztag is to rugby league — non-contact —

and will have a place in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.”

So the NFL is pushing hard for inclusion in 2032 following tge addition of Flag Football at the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The NFL are also saying that:

  • “ it started as a pilot of 10 schools on the Gold Coast to now having 500 schools around the country playing NFL Flag Football”
  • “it’s one of the world’s fastest growing sports with over 20 million players across the works now, and “it is doubling its numbers in every market we are investing in.”

In a statement by the Seven Network in Australia:

  • an estimated 2.6 million peoole saw part of its NFL Super Bowl broadcast in February when the Philadelphia Eagles played against the Kansas City Chiefs,
  • irs tv coverage  was watched by 892,000, up 11% on 2024,
  • the entire BFL season was watched by 4.7 million people in Australia.

What is NFL Flag Football?

Flag is the non-contact version of American Football where teams of five face-off wearing flag belts to replace the tackling, much like Oztag.

The attacking team gets four attempts to advance the ball over the halfway line either by throwing the ball to a receiver or handing it off to a runner in a bid to reset the down (tag) count while the opposition defends.

Failure to do so results in a turnover but if successful the attacking team will then have three more attempts to score by crossing the touch down line similar to scoring a try in rugby.

Brisbanites.

But the Games are now to be played at more venues than ever across Queensland with the revised delivery plan:

  • Brisbane
  • Gold Coast
  • Sunshine Coast
  • Cairns
  • Mackay
  • Maryborough
  • Rockhampton
  • Toowoomba
  • Townsville
  • Whitsundays

Mount Coot-tha Makeover

Mount Coot-tha is a popular tourist lookout spot with great 360 degree views of Brisbane.

From the Urban Developer is this report about building an eco-tourism complex at Mount Coot-tha in the build-up to the 2032 Games.

Queensland to repeal diversity quotas for Brisbane Olympics board

Typical Liberal National Party stupidity by the Queensland Government.

As the saying goes, you can bring a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.

Anyone know when Brisbane 2032 can start selling merchandise and exploiting the rings? I assume at a minimum after the upcoming winter games.

I've been keeping my eyes open as i get around Brisbane but short of newspaper headlines, you'd not know Brisbane is an olympic city

Not sure when they’ll have a brand/logo worked out for Brisbane 2032.  I’m assuming some time between now and LA2028 starting.

I know BOCOG have recruited Francois-Xavier Bonnaillie as its Chief Commercial Officer. Bonnaillie previously served as the Senior Director of Partnership and Licensing for the Paris 2024 Organising Committee.

So they are going to pick the best people for the job regardless of what is between their legs or what skin colour they identify as?

WHAT AN OUTRAGE!

Gout Gout‘s International Professional Debut Compared with Usain Bolt

Our own Gout Gout’s debut this week onto the international sprintng scene has been compared with Usain Bolt at the same age, same event.

At the age of 17, Gout Gout set a time of 20.02 seconds over 200m, breaking the Australian record again by two one hundredths of a second the the Golden Spike athletics event in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Back in 2006, Usain Bolt ran 20.28 in this same event when he made his international debut in his first 200m race.  As we know, Bolt later went on to win three Olympic 200m Golds and broke the world record at 19.19 seconds.

2032 at his home Olympics is looking good for Gout Gout.

Brisbane Olympic Infrastructure  Laws Passed to Streamline Games Delivery

It’s done.

Just as the NSW Government did for Sydney 2000 in the lead-up to Australia’s last Olympic Games, last night the Queensland Parliament passed the Amendments to streamline and enable delivery of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games infrastructure and governance processes.

This critical step will set-up Brisbane 2032 for success and should have been done a lot earlier than this by the previous Queensland Government.

7 Years To Go - Full Steam Ahead

But its finally done now and with 7 years to go, we now finally have a viable Olympic masterplan backed up by enabling legislation and an Olympic coordination authority.  This critically will make the job of Games preparation a lot easier.

We’re no on a par with where the Sydney 2000 Organising Committee was with 7 years to go and who famously went on to deliver the best Olympic Games ever.

@TorchbearerSydney just wondering if you might apply to be a Torchbearer and/or work at Australia’s next Olympic Games in 2032?   Having carried the Torch in 2000, you’d have a very good chance of carrying it again

I will apply and see how I go- I live in Adelaide now, I carried it into Byron Bay for Sydney 2000.

I am very anti the Brisbane Olympics- it is not an 'Olympic Standard' city (look at the non existent downtown, the sewers of freeways in the river and everywhere, the cold mid-winter dates, the venues spread out over hundreds of kms, the bickering over every cost that will deliver a poor outcome.

Also being gay and Aboriginal I find Queenslanders generally ... problematic.

Excellent, all the best with your application.

I wasn’t a torch bearer like yourself, but I held the extinguished Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 torches after they had passed by.

Brisbane 2032 will create it’s own identity and won’t try to imitate the scale and splendour of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, which as you said was largely co-located in one city.

Times have changed for both the Summer and Winter Games, and its becoming more common for spread out venue locations.

But Brissie still has the bulk of events happening witin its boundaries and will forge its own way.

I worked at the Athebs 2004 Games and hope you see you at Australia’s next Olympic Games in 2032 🍾🎆

For those overseas that have never heard of Brisbane until fairly recently the Olympic link below gives you a incite.

Host City of the Olympics and Paralympics | Brisbane 2032

They have some nice images and very short videos (2-5 sec).

It also gives links to all the cities involved. Click on "more or >" to get to that area, when finished go back.

I have lived in Brisbane for 72 years. Brisbane residence considers the Gold & Sunshine Coast as part of a sprawling city. The drive to both is about 1 to 1.5 hours. The reason why a lot of events will be staged there.

The main tourist destination on the Gold Coast is Surfers Paradise but i prefer the southern part from Burleigh Heads to Cooloongatta

Cooloongatta has an International Airport with connections from all other Australian capital cities.

International direct flights are limited to/from New Zealand cities, Bali Indonesia, Honolulu, LA, San Francisco and Vancouver Canada.

Brisbane International pretty much anywhere be it direct or a connecting flight.

Sunshine Coast has a Domestic airport with international flights only to New Zealand

Population: Greater Brisbane (2.6 mill), Gold Coast (0.75 mill), Sunshine Coast (0.4 mill). Total around 3.75 million

By 2032 Brisbane & Cooloongatta International Airports will be connected by rail (via Brisbane City) with one changeover to light rail needed.
