Yeah, that’s basically the situation in a nutshell. Any hopes, as slight as they are, that an alternative plan to QSAC will get up will only happen after October - and as you say, likely next year as the front running candidate has committed to a final Olympic decision after 100 days. BigVic Posted May 10 Report Posted May 10 11 years is plenty of time. Sydney had 7 years to prepare and had to build a stadium from sratch Quote
FYI Posted May 10 Report Posted May 10 They no longer have 11 years, though. They already wasted three of those, & now have 8 years, & looks like another year is going to be wasted which then gives them 7 years before they might finally know what exactly to do. And unlike Brisbane, Sydney already knew where their stadium was going. So no, it's not as black-&-white as you're trying to paint this mess out to be. Quote

Sydney had 7 years to prepare and had to build a stadium from sratch Sydney had a site (Homebush Bay) set aside and earmarked for use for an Olympic Games since the late 1980s when it was bidding for 1996. It had all the strategic planning sorted a good 15 years ahead of 2000. Design began 1994, Preconstruction/site clearance began in 1995, and construction the following year. The stadium opened in early 1999: a full 18 months ahead of the 2000 Olympics. Brisbane probably won't have that level of prepardness despite having almost doubt the amount of time for preparation. Brisbane still needs to decide on a site, undertake all geotechnical work, design/development, environmental approvals etc. This in itself can take YEARS. Remember, nothing will happen between now and early 2025 as everything rests on the October election and resulting review. 1 Quote
Rob2012 Posted May 10 Report Posted May 10 My point about nothing being settled till early 2025 wasn't me worrying that they might not get the thing built (wherever it is). It was more an exasperated realisation this is going to drag on for quite a bit longer. But they have squandered the luxury of all the extra time they had. They're now back on a more normal schedule and things can get tight if they have many more squabbles over this. At the moment, I'm still in the camp that says it'll be fine. Quote

I think it'll be fine also - just as Melbourne 1956 was fine after its own organisational problems. Quote

FYI Posted May 10 Report Posted May 10 Quote Sydney even had its Aquatic Centre open before it won the Games...Brisbane doesn't even know where it is going to host swimming! And it's not just a matter of the venues, either, but also transport. So if anything, it could be a mad-dash at the last minute, & run crews 24/7 to get everything done in time (ala Athens 2004), & that's where costs will begin to skyrocket - &/or have the athletes, during the Parade of Nations, walk by construction workers clearing up construction debris from a still incomplete Olympic stadium (ala Montreal 1976). But if that's someone's idea of "it'll be fine", then what's another couple of years of just sauntering about over this big shindig then. Quote
capetown2020 Posted May 11 Report Posted May 11 I did these I suppose in 2006, just came across them. 1 Quote

AustralianFan Posted June 21 Author Report Posted June 21 TALKS RE MEGA STADIUM FOR BRISBANE 2032 Just posted on SSC this evening by another member. “Peter Gleeson (radio presenter and journalist) reveals that the LNP are having behind-closed-doors meetings about a possible ‘mega stadium’ for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.” Here’s the link to this report on Radio Station 4BC in Brisbane: >> EXCLUSIVE: Top Level meetings consider mega stadium for Brisbane 2032 << This news is brilliant! A private and public funding partnership for a mega legacy stadium in Brisbane which, as the report says, there are already several stadium examples of this in the USA. I’m surprised its taken this long for business and public monies to come together to create a truly memorable and lasting legacy for AFL, Cricket and the 2032,Olympic and Paralympic Games. Possible stadium sites mentioned in the discussions were Hamilton Wharves or Victoria Park. What sort of public transport infrastructure is at Hamilton wharves? Is that where a Brisbane Metro busway is planned past the Athlete’s Village? Forgive my excitement. Lets hope this private/public stadium funding partnership comes to fruition. Bring it on! 1 Quote

The April 2024 image above is from Brisbane Development.com and indicates a Northshore Hamilton Olympic Park adjacent to the Athletes Village and with an Olympic Park Train Station between the two. This of course pre-dated the private/public discussions re a new “mega stadium” reported just this evening 21 June 2024. Now that this story has been broken, it will be interesting to see if journalists will now turn their attention to both state leaders of the LNP and ALP re their response to all this. 1 Quote
AustralianFan Posted June 22 Author Report Posted June 22 Ok so on the “no-new-stadium” side of all this sits the IOC. Tracey Holmes talked in March about this and also the IOC’s substsntial financial contribution to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games: Quote

Will be a shame to lose the Bellerive, probably the most beautiful major ground in cricket... This is nothing to do really with Brisbane, but interesting nonetheless… Mixed reaction to Hobart's new Macquarie Point stadium design, as architects explain concept A bit SoFi like IMO Quote
yoshi Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 Oh is that the final design? I wasn't expecting it to be fully indoors, would that make it ineligible for Test cricket? I don't like the idea of cricket indoors tbh, obviously it'd stop rain delays but the conditions affect the ball, how it travels etc. Going indoors removes that - hopefully they keep the Bellerive for cricket. From the article: Cricket Tasmania chief executive Dominic Baker told the ABC last week that the International Cricket Council was becoming increasingly interested in the Hobart project, while the Board of Cricket Control in India is also said to be exploring the concept of roofed arenas. Testing would have to occur for Test cricket at the stadium to be green-lit. Quote
yoshi Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 Hmm. Don't think I like it. In the week Jimmy Anderson retires, it's a bit sad to think about a stadium where reverse swing couldn't ever happen... Quote
Victorian Posted July 12 Report Posted July 12 Without a major stadium like what was proposed for the Gabba or Vic Park, when Hobart’s stadium is complete, Brisbane will slip down in the rankings to draw big sporting events and musical acts to the city. FYI Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 Brrrrr, 41F is quite chilly (even at night) for mid-July! The IOC better bring their long-johns!! Quote
