PikyoK
What a milestone! 10 years to go until Brisbane 2032. This must be the first time in Olympic History that we celebrate a decade until an Olympic Games (correct me if I'm wrong). BTW Nice graphic @Bear

AustralianFan
“The government said it wanted the Olympic Games to "accelerate delivery of existing long-term plans" on the Northshore Hamilton area and the development plan for the area would be amended to deliver "new residential, commercial, retail and mixed-use development opportunities". “But unlike the Sydney Games, there are currently no plans to use modular or relocatable housing.”

ulu
Quote brisbanetimes.com.au Gabba ‘locked in’ despite potential Olympic cost blow-out Cameron Atfield 3-4 minutes National Queensland Road to Brisbane 2032 The Queensland government will push on with plans to demolish and rebuild the Gabba for the 2032 Olympic Games, even if required changes to the precinct’s critical infrastructure cause a cost blow-out. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the project was “locked in” despite concerns about the site footprint being too small to accommodate a 50,000-seat Olympic stadium. The Gabba will be rebuilt for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.Credit:Queensland Government - Artists’ impression There have been suggestions Vulture and Stanley streets may need to be converted to tunnels to allow the stadium to be built, while there were heritage concerns around East Brisbane State School, which sits on the same block and would be encroached by any expansion. Such work, beyond the scope of the stadium itself, could significantly add to a bill already estimated at about $1 billion. Palaszczuk would not be drawn on potential cost blow-outs on Monday. “We are very comfortable with the proposal for the Gabba that we put to the International Olympic Committee,” she said. “There is a lot of consultation to happen and when we have the final decisions, we will release those final, final decisions to the public. “We’ve got 10 years to go.” Pushed on the suitability of the Gabba site, despite a possibly inadequate site footprint, Palaszczuk stood firm. “Can I just say the International Olympic Committee is very excited about the Gabba, so we are locked in there,” she said. Opposition Olympics spokesman Jarrod Bleijie said it demonstrated that Olympics infrastructure needed to be delivered by an independent body, not the state government. “Last week, the Palaszczuk government said it was ‘stabbing in the dark’ when it came to redeveloping the Gabba,” he said, referring to comments made by Education Minister Grace Grace in budget estimates. “Now there are reports that infrastructure projects could already be blowing out by $1 billion before we’ve even seen a shovel in the ground.” The location of another major Olympic venue, the Brisbane Live arena, also remained uncertain. Related Article Brisbane Times revealed last month that the arena, which had been mooted for above train lines adjacent to Roma Street station, could be shifted across the street. That would require the demolition of the Queensland Police Service headquarters. “There is a whole lot of consultation that needs to happen before our final, final decisions are made,” Palaszczuk said. “But there will be a Brisbane Live arena in that vicinity, so we’ll work through all of those issues and when we are ready to make an announcement, we will make an announcement.” Bleijie said Palaszczuk’s government needed to release its Olympics infrastructure schedule so Queenslanders could “ensure what was promised will be delivered”. “The infrastructure schedule should include the list of projects, the costings plan and delivery timelines that Queenslanders were promised last year,” he said. “The Olympics is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver a vision for our state. It is not a vanity project.” https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/gabba-locked-in-despite-potential-olympic-cost-blow-out-20220801-p5b69p.html Most interesting part: Quote There have been suggestions Vulture and Stanley streets may need to be converted to tunnels to allow the stadium to be built, while there were heritage concerns around East Brisbane State School, which sits on the same block and would be encroached by any expansion. yoshi
Hmm at which point will the Gabba renovation become projected to be more expensive than a completely new stadium would be. Hopefully before it's too late to change course. It’s not a renovation. Effectively a new stadium will be built after demolition of the existing Gabba Stadium. The problem is the cost of doing this in a very tight space.
yoshi
Yeah that's kinda the point I'm making... don't you have any free sites for a new stadium that'd be cheaper than the Gabba? And possibly even a little bit bigger? You've got cricket and I think AFL, so it's not like there's no market. The site of the Gabba would probably be pretty lucrative too. I get the history and how close to the city it is, but from (a long way) afar, it just strikes as less bang for your buck than you could get...
