Interesting. The way that a glass company fits the needs of the media and broadcasters of an Olympic summer games does seem more ambiguous than the way the NBC Universal facilities for the 2028 games will do. But the shell of a large structure at least takes care of the space needs for journalists and the furniture-equipment they depend upon.

Mayor resigns from Brisbane 2032 Board over drink-driving crash

Redland City Council Mayor Karen Williams has resigned from her role on the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee after crashing her car when drink-driving.

Williams said she made an "error of judgement" after getting behind the wheel following "several glasses of wine".

She was reportedly three times over the legal limit when she crashed her car in Cleveland on Thursday (June 23).

An hour before, she had reportedly spoken to families of victims who had been killed in drink-driving incidents.

Police said they were awaiting blood test results and there would be no update on the case until then.

Politicians have called for her resignation as Mayor on top of the Olympic position.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said Williams had informed him that she would be stepping down from the Brisbane role that she had held since April.

"I sincerely thank Mayor Williams who has always been and continues to be a strong advocate for the Games," tweeted Schrinner, a member of the Liberal National Party.

Queensland Member of Parliament Meaghan Scanlon had criticised Williams and called for her to step down from her Olympic position.

Labor MP Don Brown, whose constituency overlaps with Williams, called for her resignation and an investigation into an "after-budget party".

"I think when you look at the fact Karen Williams was on the phone to families who had lost a loved one to drink driving and then an hour later got in the car under the influence, that's pretty untenable," said Scanlon, according to the Brisbane Times.

"I absolutely understand why some of these victims' families are calling for the resignation of that Mayor.

"It's untenable for her to continue in that position given what's occurred."

Scanlon suggested Gold Coast Deputy Mayor Donna Gates as a replacement for Williams on the Brisbane 2032 Board.

An online petition calling for Williams to resign as Mayor, a role she has held for more than 10 years, has more than 2,700 signatures so far.

Yes, I agree,

It’s probably to do with the Gold Coast Mayor’s off again/on again approach to being a part of the South East Queensland Council of Mayors who were behind the 2032 Olympic bid getting off the ground in the first place.    Gold Coast decided to leave the SEQ Council of Mayors in 2018, and did not rejoin until April 2020.

Nevertheless, it’s time now for Gold Coast to be forgiven and have a representative on the 2032 Organising Committee, whoever that may be, even if it might not be the Mayor.

Ceremonies could be at the Gabba and Brisbane River with the Brisbane River to host portions of the artistic display and Gabba to host the formal protocol segment. No doubt organisers will want a ceremony by the Brisbane River similar to Paris 2024 if Paris 2024's river Opening Ceremony is a success.

Yeah but the difference is that seine has plenty of places where the most important parts of the ceremony can take place, and its course will be far larger than brisbane river. For example the most important part in paris will take place au trocadero, which has a pretty bid explanade and can hold big crowds as we saw at paris handover

In brisbane there's not really a place that can hold at least 10k athletes, unless you put seats on the main highway which would inmediately cut city-transit, also its bridges are far smaller in width and the only real place where i see this coming out is south bank. Even with renovations I dont think brisbane river bank will be able to hold thousands of spectators and less of a chance about a parade, cuz there will not be a real finish point. Something they can do is building a temporary stadium over the south bank lagoon and hold the opening ceremony in there

still keep thinking that the river being very large and not really having the capacity to put stands along it can be a pushdown for the river model. So a common stadium ceremony at gabba will be better, cheaper and specially less problematic than the parade.

Could well be on the cards to involve the Brisbane River being so close to the Olympic Stadium.  Given Queensland’s stunning tropical scenery, they may well involve other locations too around the state, “live”,  not recorded as it was for Athens 2004 and the drumming sequence from Olympia.

A singapore 2010 platform could be instaled in the place mentioned before, the only concern for me would be all the trees and buildings placed where there was the expo but surely a platform stadium like in singapore and making a temporary amphiteather could make an astonishing background as like istanbul proposed for 2020. The main concern would be the impact on the price tag but if it is temporary something can be done

Would be very costly to build a temporary structure over water as Singapore did, which is a permanent structure and is still there today, 12 years later.

Singapore’s over-the-water platform performance area was constructed in a very sheltered waterway, compared to the strong current in the Brisbane River which recently swept away one or two river ferry terminals.

That whole Brisbane South Bank area where the 1988 World Expo was held is hosting several 2032 Olympic sports so it can’t really be used for a full Opening Ceremony as well as there isn’t the space like at Trocadero in Paris 2024.
