Brisbane 2032

While it is technically true because Queensland couldn't do the Olympics alone, a federal Labor government would've likely done the same if they were in power especially considering there's a Labor government in Queensland.

True.
Both the government and main opposition parties at both state and federal levels support the Brisbane 2032 Olympics/Paralympics.

Gabba Stadium Goes to Market

feVI6lM.jpg

“Set to receive a $100 million facelift, Brisbane’s iconic sporting arena the Gabba is about to go to market for the naming rights to the stadium, raising money for the proposed redevelopment.”

“The word ‘Gabba’ is to remain in the title, with several options already put forward including the ‘Optus Gabba’, ‘Telstra Gabba’ and the ‘Suncorp Gabba’. Set to become the centrepiece of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games, the famous Queensland Sporting Grounds’ extensive revitalisation project will see its’ capacity grow from 42,000 to 50,000 patrons, elevating the arena to the number one cricket and AFL stadium in the world.”

“Although the exact amounts are yet to be confirmed, the Queensland Government will contribute some of the funds toward the design, while the private sector will be able to bid for individual projects within the redevelopment.”

“The venture will incorporate the surrounding areas of the stadium in Brisbane’s once-industrial suburb of Woolloongabba, including the Cross-River Rail Project, an underground rail system that will run from Dutton Park to the RNA showgrounds.”

“A pedestrian bridge from the Gabba Cross River Rail Station will connect directly with the main entry to the stadium, improving accessibility in a high-traffic area.”

“The Gabba Station precinct will comprise a mix of commercial and government offices, green space, residential apartments, restaurants and retail, inspiring a revitalisation of the entire inner-city area. Creating more than 100,000 new employment opportunities, Queensland’s largest infrastructure project in history is estimated to be completed by 2024, with services commencing in 2025. This will tie in with the timeline for the Gabba Stadium renovations, creating a vibrant hub only two kilometres from the Brisbane CBD, accessed via the underground transport service in as little as three minutes.”

“Construction will begin on the Gabba stadium upon completion of the Cross River Rail system, allowing plenty of time before the 2032 Olympic Games. The futuristic arena will feature ground-breaking technology, hosting the opening ceremony, track and field events and then finally the closing ceremony of the highly anticipated Olympic Games.”

”The legacy project will complement existing sporting infrastructure including Suncorp Stadium, the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and the Queensland Tennis Centre, producing a world-class arena that will continue to be utilised by our sport-loving state for generations to come.”

With work on the new stadium not commencing until Cross River Rail / Gabba Train Station is complete, it will be interesting to see what the final design will be inside a tight footprint.

Populous, designers of the last redevelopment of the Gabba and with their Asia-Pacific headquarters in Brisbane opened by the Queensland Premier in 2021, would seem to be likely to be the final designers of the new Stadium

A SoFi Stadium style with a roof extension could give nice weather cover over the pedestrian plaza between the Train Station and the Stadium and the wrap-around walkway. But a roof over the whole lot would add unnecessary cost - so I think it’s safe to say there’ll be no roof.

With the tight stadium footprint, and as much as we want a bigger capacity stadium above 50,000, (eg 60,000) it’s hard to see it being physically possible let alone such a bigger stadium being supported/funded the State Government and the legacy usage of such a bigger capacity Gabba.

With the change of government in the Australian national election overnight, certain positions announced by the outgoing government on the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee may be about to change.

Prime Minister-elect Anthony Albanese’s party has previously announced they would put forward their own nominations if it won government.

Why is this controversial? It was expected that this would occur...

Q: So I guess this is gonna happen whenever there's a change of state or federal government? Did this happen during Sydney preparations? I was too young to care at the time.

Yes, the Sydney Games were won in 1993 with a Conservative State Govt and Labor Federal Govt. By 2000 this had swapped....all went smoothly. The Games were funded by the NSW Govt.

However Brisbane is being financed 50:50 State:Federal- and the Federal Govt demanded equal representation on all Committees. I think it was partly a controlling act by PM Morrison, which has now sort-of backfired!

It’s fairly common for positions on an OCOG to chop and change over the course of its life. As Torchbearer pointed out, SOCOG went through various changes of government at the State and Federal level. Probably the most significant leadership change this brought with SOCOG was when the incoming Labor State Govt appointed Michael Knight as Olympics Minister and put him in charge of SOCOG - it  basically meant he had the political clout and the formal SOCOG position to cut through all the hurdles needed to successfully deliver the 2000 games.

In terms of Brissie, again as Torchbearer pointed out, the 50-50 State-Federal split made this move inevitable. The Courier Mail’s just trying to beat up a poke at Anna rather than it being any real issue. Albo’s likely to appoint the new sports minister Anika Wells to take Colbeck’s spot - the bonus is she’s also from a Brisbane electorate. Gonna be interesting to see who replaces Ted O’Brien, the Sunshine Coast LNP MP who was also dumped. Will Albo appoint another QLD Labor MP, or might they appoint one of the Greens’ new Brisbane MPs?
