Melbourne’s the sports-mad city whose citizens would all give their left eyeballs to host another games. Sydney’s more “been there, done that”. Damn. Largest collection of Olympic memorabilia outside of Lausanne, Switzerland. Since the enthusiasm for the summer games was so strong in Sydney, I didn't think Melbourne could be any greater. But I guess it would be.

If the concept of this being always reserved for summer games were implemented, that would be both more green-Earth friendly and sustainable: A bit of construction work isn’t exactly planet destroying. The amount of resources consumed - just daily - to power the internet for people like us to post things or look at cat videos is far more damaging. And anyway, infrastructure gets old and dated. Things always need to be replaced. Sydney Olympic Stadium is already in the midst of a major rebuild/redevelopment. And other growing cities also need amenities for sports etc, and the games are often one way for such cities to fast-track hem.

For technical/symbolic/operational reasons, however, I still like the concept of former host cities being in a constant loop of upcoming games. But that's for certain former host cities, not all of them. The great enthusiasm for the games in Sydney or London, for example, was very different from the way the event was received in Rio. Actually, it was Melbourne that got muscled aside, according to another Aussie member that use to post in the past. But also the IOC's own, current strict July/Aug. hosting time-frame didn't help Melbourne's cause either, since it would be way too cold there for a 'Summer' Olympics in those months. 26 minutes ago, Olympics2028 said: I know in the US, for several years Boston/Chicago/SF/NYC, etc, were treated as default options to holding another games in LA. Since I don't know the culture and politics in Australia, I have only a vague notion of how things work there. My sense was that Sydney is the go-to city for Aussie in general. So its sports scene and, in particular, highly embraced Olympics in 2000 would make it outrank both Melbourne and Brisbane.
Olympics2028
This looks like one of the nicest, friendliest Olympic villages set up for a summer games. It's not along the lines of the "Commie" block style of housing in Tokyo or Rio. I think Paris 2024 is going more for this format. I'm partial to it also because, hey, it looks like a newer neighborhood in southern California. lol

Funny you say that - on a recent episode of House Hunters International, there was a guy moving from Miami to Brisbane. He was the dopey surfer type, & he was saying how much Brisbane reminded him of Miami. But what I meant is more from an international *Olympic* perspective, since Atlanta is an Olympic city. And besides, it's not like Miami, & especially Orlando (which I'm sure even from an international perspective, many would be hard-pressed to find on a map) would be intriguing Olympic options from an international POV. I sometimes think of Miami like our Rio de Janiero, but without the rolling hills & Christ the Redeemer. Very large Brazilian population down there, too. But I think the weather there during the July/Aug. time-frame is also it's negative. Like Houston, & the rest of the U.S. gulf coast during that time, is very much like India's monsoon season. Very hot, humid & lots & lots of rain.

In various ways, I think it or Sydney fit the needs of an Olympic games better than Tokyo, Paris or London do. Cities are like people. Just as certain people have better or different skillsets than others do, certain cities fit a major sports event better than other places do. So-called world capitals in Europe or North America are better for things like the arts, museums, fine dining, old-world architecture. Other cities are better for track and field, baseball, volleyball, swimming, field hockey, football (or futbol), etc.

That doesn't fit the stereotype. I'd think the more sports-oriented cities of a country are judged as more brawn than brains. By contrast, the places where the artiste-intellectual crowd hangs out (and aren't as much into sports) is stereotyped as more brains than brawn. That amount is a contribution from the City Deal agreement including the cross river tunnelling works and pedestrian piazza joining the station to the stadium. The entire Cross River Rail project, of which the Gabba Stadium Train Station is one part, includes several other stations along that line under the Brisbane River and on both sides of it. The cost of the stadium rebuild itself is separate around $1b or so and has been previously announced.

This $450million is going directly into the Gabba Metro Starion which is (Deputy Premier Miles) quote: “going to be much more than a new station, it's a major new transport interchange linking our flagship cross-river rail, heavy rail upgrades with the Brisbane City Council's flagship Metro project." "People will be able to change from Metro to trains here, access our new train station and of course get to and from the fantastic Olympics venue, the Gabba that will be rebuilt." “The Gabba Station is the centrepiece of the deal.”
