BBC's Dan Roan breaking this news now...

Quite radical changes with only athletics and swimming to be compulsory - cut to just 2 from 16.

From the BBC report:

“By restricting the number of mandatory sports to just athletics and swimming, the new roadmap will allow hosts the space to choose the likes of surfing, skateboarding and climbing - all new to the Olympic programme - along with e-sports.”

“Sports that are especially popular in a host country - such as lacrosse in Canada or kabaddi in India - would also be encouraged.”

Interesting to see these points:

• Allow and encourage innovative co-hosting proposals, across multiple cities, regions, countries

• Only in exceptional cases, allow co-hosting to be inclusive of non-Commonwealth hosts

• Continue to explore impact and potential of Youth Games and links, if any, to main Games

• Develop a proactive Commonwealth Championships strategy

• Commonwealth Masters Event

Doesn't really elaborate on these points. Would be interested to see how a Commonwealth Championships fit in within the current Games

Well this is...weird. What's with the core sports list, haven't they gone and it's seemingly every sport for itself bar the two? Didn't know about the being inclusive of non-Commonwealth hosts - where could that be useful? Belfast/Dublin? Vancouver/Seattle? This seems like a very strange approach to making the games attractive, I get that they have a lack of bidders problem but would cutting minimum capacities &/or allowing multi city hosting solve that without drastic surgery like this?

When I first saw non-Commonwealth hosts maybe that is America but your suggestions seem more likely especially the Belfast/Dublin proposal. Belfast would not be able to host alone but could host with Dublin and even Cardiff together.

Having the multiple nations bidding I think too could be of a benefit. You could have a Pacific Islands bid or even get PNG and New Zealand to host together? Same thing about African nations joining together and a Caribbean bid too. Singapore and Malaysia although they would be able to host alone might join together to host if it will make them save money?

Just two cores sports would kill it off ultimately IMO.   It largely only remains really relevant in the UK and Australia so catering to their core events is necessary too.

What I think is an issue, and this is partly due to the UK and Australia dominating hosting, is the Commonwealth Games isn't seen as a springboard to hosting other multinational events.   Really it should be the stepping stone for many countries to show they could step up to the Olympics (though India really screwed that up!) or at least major international events.

OK, it has to change otherwise it will die but must admit that if Europe got it's act together and sorted out a proper Eurolympics I wouldn't be too gutted should the Commonwealth Games come to an end now, even though it is one of the few non-team events where we can see Welsh athletes compete as Wales.

Aren't the european games, the "eurolympics"?

Not really - the top tier sports are luke warm to them and if they are included it's with secondary events or under 23s.    They've set up their own rival European Sports Championship which actually worked quite well in Glasgow but looks like some sports won't return for 2022.
