Victorian
Australian sports and government officials are formulating plans to bid for the 2030 or 2034 men’s soccer World Cup. It's part of a strategy to bring a string of major events to Australia, before and after the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane https://www.theaustralian.com.au/subscribe/news/1/?sourceCode=TAWEB_WRE170_a_TWT&dest=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theaustralian.com.au%2Fsport%2Ffootball%2Faustralia-set-to-prepare-bid-for-fifa-world-cup%2Fnews-story%2Ffb3630df8b7ddc7651f73b86cb478aa8&memtype=registered&mode=premium Is anyone able to read this article? iceman530
I would be happy to see it. The A-League needs a real shot in the arm to help survive. World Cup would absolutely keep and maintain interest

I have high hopes that Channel 10 can turn soccer around like they did for the BBL and the great job they did with the AFL.
Rob2012
Meh, didn't like it when Brazil had both a World Cup and Olympics within two years. So it's a no from me. And I say that as someone who supported the Ozzie 2022 bid.
AustralianFan
All for it. What a great boost it will be for football and Olympic sports in Australia to have the Men’s and Women’s World Cups and the Olymoic Games within around 10 years of each other. Rob2012
Just about. It's very arguable they took on too much and each negatively impacted the other. I kind of wish they'd had a breather after 2014, and put in a bid for an Olympics in the 2020s. Everything was so frenzied for Brazil in the middle of the 2010s; they put way too much pressure on themselves (and so did the world) and you could tell. Having the world's media spotlight on them for that long must've been draining as well. As soon as 2014 was done they couldn't relax and take it all in, it was onto the next one. The timing and politics at the time didn't help either event, either. I'm not convinced Brazil enjoyed its Olympics as much as it could've. Personal preference as well - and I know I had arguments with @Sir Rols about this at the time - but I don't like them being too close together in the same country. I was all Brazilled out after 2014 so 2016 didn't feel as amazing, I was full on Chinese after 2008, a South Africa Olympics straight after 2010 would've felt like too much whereas now (in an ideal world) it would be great, and let's see how I feel after America's World Cup in 2026, but I'm not sure I won't be too full of America by then either. Bloody hell, that was a rambling post. Basically, there's no point having a Brazillian and having another one straight after.

Read my post again, more slowly this time. I'll spell it out for you. The implication was - clearly - that I'm not sure LA28 will feel as amazing after a full-helping of USA USA USA only two years earlier. Obviously I won't be able to tell until it happens though. Scotguy II
What makes it worse Rols is a potential 2026 comms then potential 2030 wc then a 2032 Olympics. Not sure where the Australian government going to get all this cash for these events. But i am with you, can have too much in a short period of time. The thing is the 2026 CWG is NSW with Olympics in Queensland. They are different governments. World Cup too will be shared considering games will be right across the country. Sir Rols
FA CEO James Johnson says Australia is not bidding for the FIFA World Cup, but points to 2034 as next opening
iceman530
hey, Id be all for an England 2030, Aus/NZ 2034, lets get it to happen
Sir Rols
I really do hope England gets its act together for 2030. But regarding Oz/NZ 2034 if that happens - would FIFA really countenance three predominantly “Anglo” WCs in a row?

After that wembley incident in the UEFA Euro 2020 final, I dont think UK will get the cup in 2030, instead I believe spain and portugal will have the biggest chance to be host against the south american sentimental bid, somewhat like athens in 1996. Also we must remember that the other likely candidate for 2034 cup is China, and comparing stadiums and overall infrastructure I dont think China will have any rival by then
Sir Rols
Ugh, yeah, China…
iceman530
au contraire, we knock out two birds with one stone on the Anglo-themed cup. Here's the fun curveball. Look at it from a FIFA perspective here. Australia is ASIAN in the eyes of FIFA (plays Japan, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Qatar, India, China). They qualify through Asia. FIFA would be giving the region of ASIA a shot at the world cup. And that "Asian" country instantly becomes more appealing than a China bid. So, you get your Europe bid with England, and then your Asia bid with Australia.

Errr...frankly, it's FIFA who need to get their act together. We'll bid again (likely a four of five nation bid), but there's no way we should be pussyfooting around FIFA's apparent sensibilities this time. Not after they were happy to give it to a slave state. Any lazy suggestions of English arrogance emanating from FIFA should be met with a simple "**** you". The last bid was incredibly careful not to repeat the mistakes of the previous one. It was, if anything, too meek and modest as a result. But in truth, it wasn't corrupt enough to win with the FIFA ExCo. We should present our plan and be done with it. If that's not enough, move on. In truth, we don't need a world cup. It'd be nice. But if it means kowtowing to FIFA too much then nah. Edited August 15, 2021 by Rob.
