The One Thing In The Olympics That Still Lives In The Stone Age

Given how modern technology has advanced virtually everything about the Olympics, including how races are timed, cameras are now all state of the art HD, and equipment and clothing are better than ever before, I would like to know why runners names and numbers are still identified using pieces of white paper attached to their uniforms using SAFETY PINS. This is literally like using diapers from the 1950's. It would be so easy to use any number of high tech methods to do this, yet this prehistoric practice continues.

Because this is the most cost-efficient and most sure-fire way to ensure that the TV cameras can identify who is who in bunched-up situations.  Even if the technoclogy is already there for them to have chips that a computer can then flash their names on the screen --

1.  What assurance do you have that the body is positioned in the right angle for that app to work?

2.  How do you keep track of your outfits which have working chips?  What if you have to change singlets ASAP?  You have to worry about - OMG!  Did  I bring the alternate shirt with the working chip?  Or did I leave that behind?

It still may seem crude but it works right now -- and is one less technical thing to think about when prepping to get into your competition zone.

3.  What about other malfunctions??

They use chips for marathon races so it can't be to hard.

I expect every athlete in every event has a chip on then for timing and tracking. Of course they do.

Why is it such a big deal that they also wear bibs for visual identification? Like watching them in real life or on TV.

*puts on best Boomer voice*  What is it with these millennials. They freak out at anything analog. If they can’t follow it on a smart device, it’s beyond their understanding.
