TorchbearerSydney
Sydney approached organisers with the idea of having the Closing on Sydney Harbor- with athletes on barges near the bridge, a million plus spectators and the worlds largest fireworks display....I think what tripped the idea over in the end is security... Heck, if your setting is Paris, why wouldn't you?! That whole area with the esplanade leading from right under the tower, the bridge, then that big square where the handover was looks like such an amazing venue, and the whole idea of transforming the ceremony into a street or river parade feels so perfectly French somehow. It'll scream THIS IS PARIS far more than anything they could do inside the Stade de France. Aren't venues to be built there?

How else could they have accomplished it without SORCERY, NECROMANCY and the DARK ARTS?? appeared and on cue.

But that doesn't mean that it can't be the reason why he requires it in his intros. To you it may be. But there are millions of first-timers there who do NOT know who he is. The intro gives credentials as to who he is, and why he has the myke. Simple as that. Laughable. Actually, there was nothing out of place with that. Samaranch was the Spanish ambassador to Moscow. "His/Her Excellency" is the proper address for ambassadors. And then JAS moved into the presidency of the IOC, an international body -- and just carried the honorific with it. Nothing inappropriate about that. Since the SLC scandal and „reforms“: 8 years plus possibility for another 4 (which Bach just got in spring, unanimously). Rumour has it Bach‘s troops are aiming at changes again so that he can stay in power after 2025 (cue Putin, Xi…see a pattern?).
AmaniS
I have othing against an open opening ceremony. It would give more people the ability to participate. But I question if Paris can do it. I have no problem with a mix of AR, lights, drones, to entertain. But that hand off was a bad video. There were one or two elements that were nice. The sax in space was cool. But it was a girl on a bike on a green screen. No real stunts. No wow. The other part was a recording of a welcome home celebration film a day before. They couldn't even train him to write Paris 2024 backwards. They had months to redo what they were planning when they knew there would be no foreign spectators. The creativity was not there. I’m pretty sure the bike tour on the rooftops of Paris was NOT green screened. Looked pretty real to me. And it wasn’t meant to be about stunts, but location. Paris itself was the wow. As to the concert, it was advertised as live. Unless you have any other information to the contrary, I assume it was. Any clarification from French members? The only bit I have a doubt about was the shot of Macron atop the Eiffel Tower (could they have a drone or a chopper in the vicinity with the aerial stunt jets about the fly through the space?). As to the suitability of the city to an open, citywide OC, IMO if any city is suited to it, it’s Paris. From the Seine to the magnificence of its boulevards and landmarks, the city is a star in its own right that couldn’t be conveyed as well from within a stadium. Even if they go for a traditional stadium ceremony, I’d say tone your hopes down for a grande histoire and recreations of Madame La Guillotine beheading Louis Capet or Napoleon retreating from Moscow - if the Japanese have developed a reputation for stark minimalist ceremonies, the French have themselves for weirdly avant garde. Anthony
wouldn't the champ de mars make the most sense for an opening? but there will be venues built there.
baron-pierreIV
Nope. An "open" -- no gates; no guards -- OC won't happen. Do you really think the French Secret Service will let this happen? Oh yeah, each and every French citizen and "visitor" is a good person; loves the Olympics and will do NOTHING to harm it.
Sir Rols
I would expect the French, of all people, would be alert to the needs of security and wouldn’t venture the notion if they didn’t think they could secure it. An open ceremony, even with ticketless entry, wouldn’t preclude fenced off, security checked and guarded spectator areas - much like Olympic Live sites are already organised in Olympic (and even non-Olympic) cities. This from just before Tokyo opened: Paris 2024 to reveal city-centre Opening Ceremony locations by "end of the year" That seems to me the plan is pretty close to being confirmed and the “open” aspect is basically that it won’t be in the stadium, but rather a number of discreet controlled locations in the city. I think the only real doubts are mostly wishful longing by the stadium spectacle diehards.

I thought it was beach volleyball, but I saw some other recent reference to weightlifting or wrestling or something. I don’t think that would preclude the area being one used for ceremonies - just as a stadium OC doesn’t preclude athletics using the same venue.
baron-pierreIV
Estanguet talks thru his chapeau. I'll believe his ideas when I see them. Those "street" ceremonies do not provide great drama IMHO. Has he even consulted with the likes of Balich, etc? The organization and logistics alone will be a nightmare to say the least. The French have such great museums but lousy "ceremonial" ideas -- tres, tres bizarre. Remember when Philippe Starck first floated his idea of medals for Paris 2024? Medals that could be cloned 4x? Why should the medals split up? Those are hard-earned valuable things. The IOC shot it down quickly. They just seem to be sooooo DESPERATE for new and innovative ideas, they will try every wacky idea under the sun -- no matter how impractical when you break it down -- just to be tres, tres innovative! Sir Rols
Well, seeing as the ship appears to have sailed already with the city ceremony aboard, maybe we should speculate on how some things will be done. Like, how will they do the parade of nations? Barges? For the flame, what’s the odds the Eiffel Tower will be the cauldron (or rather, have it sit atop)? That’ll solve the visibility issue. Or maybe this discussion should adjourn to the Paris forums.
