Palette86
Quote Japanese Crown Prince Akishino to attend Tokyo Olympics closing ceremony Japanese Crown Prince Akishino will attend the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics in place of Emperor Naruhito, the Imperial Household Agency said Friday. The emperor's younger brother will attend the event at the National Stadium, to be held without spectators due to COVID-19 concerns, on Aug. 8. The emperor, who serves as the honorary patron of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, declared the start of the games at the opening ceremony on July 23 in accordance with the Olympic Charter's rule that stipulates the role be given to the host nation's head of state. The International Olympic Committee prescribes the closing ceremony be attended by the head of state or someone chosen by them, according to the agency. At the previous Tokyo Olympics in 1964, Emperor Hirohito, the current monarch's grandfather, attended both the opening and closing ceremonies. Emperor Naruhito's opening declaration delivered last week in Japanese -- "I hereby declare the opening of the Tokyo Games commemorating the 32nd Olympiad of the modern era" -- became the subject of scrutiny for saying "commemorating" in place of the traditionally used "celebrating." The change in wording drew speculation that the emperor and officials at the agency had sought to reflect mixed feelings among the Japanese public about hosting the Olympics during a global pandemic. Ikarus360
Regarding the "commemorating" thing, Naruhito wasn't the only one who did that. Gustavo Diaz (former mexican president) also used the word when opening the Mexico 1968 Olympics. Not sure which were the reasons, but its possible that because of the controversial massacre of students in Tlatelolco which happened just days before the opening, he decided to avoid the word "celebrating" as well. The more you know, the more you realize massive anti-Olympics demonstrations are far from being new. At least Japan didn't screwed up and killed their own protesters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tlatelolco_massacre Quote Following a summer of increasingly large demonstrations protesting against the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City, the Mexican Armed Forces opened fire on 2 October 1968 on unarmed civilians, killing an undetermined number, in the hundreds. It occurred in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in the Tlatelolco section of Mexico City. The events are considered part of the Mexican Dirty War, when the US-backed PRI regime violently repressed political and social opposition. The massacre occurred 10 days before the Olympics' opening ceremony.
Olympian2005
Will there be any athletes at all attending the closing? I thought that they left Tokyo as soon as their competition was over. If so, with the Paris presentation not in the stadium and no athletes, will make for an even worse ceremony than the opening

The winning teams in Basketball, Volleyball, soccer, boxing, etc., other teams sports will also PROBABLY be there since their competition ends this weekend PLUS the Japanese and CHinese athletes will be there to save face (China to probably hand out and drum up hoopla for Beijing 2022). So there might be a few hundred.
SkiFreak
Yikes 5am Calgary time. I think I'll just watch the replay. CBC has Olympic coverage on until around 5pm or so and then sayonara! until the paralympics start. At least we only have to wait 6 months until the winter games. Nacholympic
Just few hours to the closing ceremony (and no excitment about it at al!) ABOUT THE PARIS 2024 HANDOVER: - It will be broadcasted from Paris. No handover in the Olympic stadium will be made. - They will show some sports in different and rare places of Paris - They will raise the biggest flag in history. They want to break the world record for the biggest flag ever. It will be raised at the Effel Tower - Some airplanes with athletes inside will pass thorugh Paris sky during the segment. - It will last 12 minutes

TorchbearerSydney
Q: We all know France is the birthplace of Baron de Coubertin, so maybe they are doing a homage to him. Well known rascist, misogynist and elitist....maybe not.... "He considered the "civilized part" of mankind threatened by moral and physical degeneration, while he saw the rest still in a state of "primitive" and inferior civilization. In his publications, we can reveal an ambiguous, racist period from 1900 to the end of the First World War, with many racist statements claiming the innate inferiority of non-whites on the one hand and on the other hand statements considering the educability of "races" other than the white race." Tatsh
I'll watch the OC on internet. Getting up early and knowing that this will be dull, doesn't deserve to watch on tv.

Olympian2004
Hello to everyone who is still joining the closing ceremony live. At least the ceremony starts with a nice montage of the Games' highlights. I must say that (already during Tokyo's handover in Rio) Tokyo delivered some great videos for its ceremonies. Ikarus360
Closing ceremony begins with a montage of some of the best moments of the games. I gotta admit it was a miracle we could still see good sport events, or events happening at all despite all the doom spelled.

Olympian2004
I heard on television that the ceremony will follow a "a day in the park" concept, therefore they have created an aritifical park on the infield.
