Vancouver 2030

Quite amazing news coming out of Lausanne.

Vancouver back in the mix?

Plus upwards of six interested parties in the 2030 or future Winter Games?

Renewed interest in hosting Winter Games ….. Gosh they kept all that under their hat.

Read between the lines. The BC government has still said no to any funding. No money no bid. This is as I said in another thread nothing more than PR stunt by the IOC to make it sound like there's a viable alternative to giving Salt Lake City the 2030 Olympics.

And I buy the argument about six interested parties as credible as the IOC's "we are postponing the decision on 2030 due to climate change." If you really have six interested candidates, there's no need to hide them. It's another ploy to get SLC to come down on the asking price. The IOC is like the poker player at the table with a pair of tens and the opponent has a full house.

It must be horrible to be so naive.

The IOC have just announced to the world’s media that 6 plus parties are interested in the 2030+ plus Winter Games.

This renewed interest is likely, according to the IOC, as a result of the pause and major review into the Winter Games including a possible rotating pool of hosts plus other climate benchmarks as announced in the December IOC EB Meeting.

If you would like to keep up to date with all this @ulu,  is up to you.

But the next IOC EB media conference is expected late tonight Australian time.

Six interesting parties and a growing list is what they have announced as a result of the December changes they are considering to the Olympic Winter Games.

This includes renewed interest from Canada which they have specifically named.

So please back off with the trolling comments.

Uhmm . . . You know that hosting an Olympics is not free right? You know the money has to come from somewhere. If you even read my previous post you'd know the BC government has said no to funding another Vancouver Olympics snd they said the decision was final. So I'm genuinely asking you where you think the money will come from. To have a credible bid you have to have financial backing.

Perhaps you should first read, or Watch the media conference, the actual Journalists Questions and the IOC Answers, transpripts of which just posted in

Why not just say "from Alberta" or "from Quebec" then, instead of being so vague. So I happen to agree that this is basically just from the COC, & that is what the "renewed interest (from Canada)" is really all about. It's just the IOC's way of not saying; "we're back at square one".

Actually, another province isn't it. Dubi confirmed that Vancouver is the one that "could be back at the (2030) table".

Sounds like the COC is back at the table which they've been ever since BC said no to funding and then there was the gaslighting of the BC folks by both the First Nations and COC for not funding it claiming it was an insult to the First Nations. Interesting that there's been no comment from Vancouver or the provincial government in Victoria. I interpret the lack of the silence that the COC would like a Vancouver bid but no one is budging as far as opening up the checkbook.

IOC official still talking with Canadian Olympic Committee about hosting another Winter Olympics

Christophe Dubi, Olympic Games Executive Director, 29 March 2023:

“Our understanding is that conversations will take place again between the COC and the local authorities. So this is during the next few weeks,” Dubi said during a webconference with reporters. “So until then, no further work to be done either from us or COC. But we understand that discussions will take place, so we look forward to hearing the result of these.”

IOC claim Vancouver "still at the table" to host Winter Olympics even after collapse of 2030 bid

“Dubi would not be drawn on whether he expects these discussions to focus on the 2030 Winter Games or another future edition.”

"I would be more comfortable if they do respond to this very question," Dubi added”.

"What I can tell you is there was a project with an economical situation that was discussed between the parties and they should confirm whether it's for one specific edition or a longer-term perspective."

For Canada they are still at the table as an interested party.

This past week, the IOC has indicated above Canada are considering the “economical situation around either a specific edition of the Games or from a long term perspective”.

For me, that’s the clearest indication yet that Canada’s renewed interest in the Winter Games is highly likely around the potential economic opportunities should they participate in a rotating host pool if that pool was adopted by the IOC.

This is in a ‘Vancouver 2030’ thread, but this latest development is more “Canada general” at this early stage and no assumptions that it will always be about Vancouver.

Dubi should resign from the IOC. He's just as guilty as Bach for pushing a return of Russia and Belarus, not to mention I think his PR skills with the press are so bad, I almost feel sorry for the guy.

Vancouver is NOT at the table. The COC is. They understandably want Vancouver and the folks in Victoria to have a change of heart, but this is like the teenager who asks his or her parents for money to go out on Saturday night, gets told no, then goes back and begs and pleads. That's exactly what the COC is doing. There has been no official communication from either Vancouver (one would expect this day in age that either their official website or Twitter account would be updated following this) or their would be some kind of press release from either Vancouver, Victoria, or even the First Nations. We've had none of that and given Vancouver's dismal approval numbers when the bid was shelved, I'd be highly skeptical this is nothing more than begging and pleading.

Again, the IOC is trying desperately to avoid paying off the SLC and USOPC.

Now the one thing and only thing Dubi says here that is just slightly credible is the possibility of a future WOGs bid, likely either 2034 (assuming SLC gets 2030) or beyond that.
