York is part of Toronto right? so why doesn't Toronto just bid? Seem stupid if you ask me. It's like why would Waitakere bid but not all of Auckland or Penrith and not Sydney?

Well, it is a suburb of Toronto (or collection of suburbs). However, suburbs in Toronto fancy themselves separate, distinct cities from Toronto.

The City of Ottawa has filed a letter with Commonwealth Games Canada, expressing its interest in becoming the Canadian bidder for the 2014 games.

The deadline for municipalities to file their letters of interest for the games was yesterday. So far Ottawa, Hamilton, Halifax and the Regional Municipality of York -- which includes Newmarket, Aurora and Markham -- have been confirmed as expressing interest in hosting the games.

Commonwealth Games Canada will now begin the process of reviewing cities that have expressed interest. In December, the organization will announce which city it will support in its bid for the 2014 games.

Ottawa's letter leaves the door open for the city to begin organizing an official bid for the games. If the letter had not been submitted, it would no longer have had the option of competing for the games.

The city now must open a debate at city council to see whether Ottawa will create a bid committee and set aside a budget to compete for the sporting event.

Ottawa is already playing catchup. Hamilton, which lost its bid to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games to India, has already approved creation of a bid team and set aside $400,000 for its campaign. The Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats have also signed on to help boost the city in its attempt to host the event.

Ottawa last tried for the Commonwealth Games in 1994. The city was eliminated when the selection committee decided Hamilton, Halifax and Montreal would continue through to the final round of selection.

Knowing Ottawa my bet is that there gonna screw this up some how lol.

Hey guys from Calgary you got any way to confirm Calgary did send a letter of intent? Because according to some news article it said it hasn't sent a letters of interest. There making Calgary bid look shady.

I was told directly(via email) by some big khauna at city hall that they submitted the letter of intent last week, and also have had this backup by two realiable sources. We`ll have to wait and see I guess....

Interesting, the CGC "Call for bids" documents says the $5000 deposit is "non-refundable".

As of now Hamilton and Halifax both has an approved bid through city council and also an approved budget. So that's the two cities that are completely officially in the bid.

Calgary, Ottawa and York Region still has to get an approval from city council and set up a budget. That should be done within a week or two since all candidates will have to attend a bid city conference next month.

As well if we look through past domestic Commonwealth Games bid it's usually a maximum of 3 cities that are made to the final round. So we'll likely see a shortlist developed by Commonwealth Games Canada.

Take for example during the 1994 domestic bid. Ottawa was eliminated when the selection committee decided Hamilton, Halifax and Montreal would continue through to the final round of selection.

No the 1994 domestic bid was for the 2002 Games, Manchester won that bid.

Ottawa has submitted to the CGC that they too are wanting to be a bid city.  However the Ottawa City Council has yet to ratify any plans.

I remembered reading a Calgary Hearld article stating that Ottawa MAY be bidding for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Don't forget: it already hosted the 2001 FRANCOPHONE Games. Still, I don't know whether it really go for it. Also, if it does goes ahead with it, it could go against Calgary AGAIN for an international event. It wanted Expo 2005, but lost nationally to Calgary.

HAMILTON - We'll find out today which Canadian cities Hamilton is up against in its bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Cities interested in hosting the event had until Friday to deliver a letter of intent.

But the names won't be released until later today.

We do know Ottawa and York region have submitted bids.

And it's believed Halifax and Calgary may have done so as well.

The city that wins the Canadian bid will then go up against other cities within the Commonwealth for the rights to host the games.

The buzz is positive for 2014 Commonwealth Games

Hamilton’s Commonwealth Games bid group will know today who is lined up against it in the Canadian stage of the chase for the 2014 showcase.

Cities interested in the 72-nation sports festival had until 5 p.m. Friday to deliver a letter of intent, but the CEO of Commonwealth Games Canada, Tom Jones, said the organization would not release details until today.

“I can tell you our office is rockin’ and rollin’ and there has been interest from more than four groups, but not how many we’ve received.”

Ottawa and York Region have submitted bids and if Calgary carries through with its declared interest, those municipalities would join Hamilton and Halifax, the two cities which battled to win the domestic nod to go after the 2010 Games.

Hamilton won that, then lost to New Delhi, India, in late 2003.

The increased interest this time is probably due to a better understanding of the value of staging the Games, said Hamilton bid leader Jagoda Pike. “There is a much more positive buzz this time because Hamilton raised the profile of the Games with the effort we made going after the 2010 Games.”

The Hamilton Spectator publisher noted the competitive field for the domestic endorsement could shrink.

Calgary doesn’t have political approval for the bid and its cost to pull together a domestic proposal for the Nov. 1 deadline.

Hamilton’s initiative is budgeted at $400,000, with $275,000 coming from the city.

Pike said it’s possible some of the competitors could look hard at the scope of the bidding process and fold.

“It’s a lot of work, a lot of detail.”

Still, the rewards can be great, noted city businessman Ron Foxcroft, one of the private sector backers of the bid.

“I just returned from Melbourne (March 2006 Games host) and people there say having the Games and new facilities and investment has moved the city 10 years ahead of where it would be otherwise.”

On the global level, Glasgow has been selected as Scotland’s candidate city and Nigeria has indicated it would try for the 2014 events.

Whichever group here wins, the domestic blessing will have an extra year this time to lobby at the international level. Hamilton started in December, 2002, towards a November, 2003, vote. The bidding for 2014 will come to a head in late 2007.

“I think that’s wise,” said Ottawa’s Bruce Robertson, a member of the executive board of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

“Melbourne was well out in front to win the 2006 Games and this time Glasgow has an early start.”

Robertson has been active in a review of bid guidelines, which will go to the federation executive board at its September meeting.

The vote for the 2010 Games ended in controversy when India pledged $100,000 US, no strings attached, to the voting delegates.

Robertson couldn’t offer details on the substance of the review.

Now that Ottawa is interested in 2014, I would think they stand the best chance of winning.  As the national capital, they offer more prestige.  It would also position them with sporting facilities that are lacking in the city.  Their stadium is pathetic.

Ottawa is the most prestigious Canadian city in a position to run for the Commonwealth Games - Toronto has Olympic Dreams, Vancouver and Montreal both have Olympics and besides Montreal is too French to be all that interested.  Calgary could be on par, but the West gets more than its fair share of International sporting competitions (Winnipeg, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton have all had major Games).

Ottawa is clean, secure, attractive and centrally located between the two largest cities in Canada.  They offer more international presence than Hamilton, more money than Halifax and unlike Calgary, they would not be another Western Canada Games.  And sorry York region...but you are a suburb of Toronto.
