An Absolutely Crushing Blow to Halifax's commonwealth games bid.

On the Abuja2014.org site is an Endorsement by FIFA President Joseph Sepp Blatter. For the uneducated Halifax people on this forum Mr. Blatter is in charge of

Soccer Worldwide and has in recent history been in talks with Mike Fennell about having a commonwealth games soccer competition.

The Nigerian government with a Chinese construction company is renovating and upgrading Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt, Nigeria to host international matches. You don't suppose they are upgrading to FIFA standards like Ghana for next years 2008 African Nations Cup? The African Nations Cup 2008 in Ghana just happens to have Nigeria's Second largest Cellphone (MTN) company as title sponsor that contest.

You might as well have Jacques Rogge's stamp of approval on the Abuja Bid because it does not get much better then Sepp Blatter.

Lets think here Mike Fennell is quoted as saying "Abuja and Nigeria are ready now to host the commonwealth games"

Mike Fennell says in Glasgow "Glasgow is a world class city with sport facilities to match"

and in Halifax Fennell said "Halifax is a nice little city"

Yes it is very apparent where the games are going to.

High power endorsements usually help a great deal along with business relations between voting member states.

IE a Nigerian owned ISP is one of Trinidad and Tobago's ISPs.

IE 2 A large Malaysian Company is an business partner and contractor for a billion dollar theme park in Abuja

IE 3 Globacom the largest cell phone company in Nigeria is investing in telecommunications infrastructure in India

Then there is the membership in Opec Nigeria shares with Brunei a oil rich kingdom in southeast asia.

And gee Ghana just happens to be a African country in the British Commonwealth who is having a major Nigerian Company sponsoring their FIFA soccer festival next year , the African Nation Cup , I wonder who they will vote for to host he commonwealth games . One guess to hit the side of a barn

ROTFLMAO. Yes Mr. Blatter we will help Ghana our Africa brother with your FIFA match next year could you please help us with our commonwealth game bid LOL

Jim, that really belongs in the Abuja 2014 thread. just because you call it a "crushing blow" to Halifax's bid, doesnt mean it belongs in here. Oh and funny you didnt mention the article that was on SSC, seeing as how you like to be completely biased towards things that bring the bid down. perhaps I'll post it...

The Daily News

COMMONWEALTH GAMES – When Halifax 2014 bid committee CEO Scott Logan meets with members of all three levels of government today to discuss the budget for the Commonwealth Games, he’ll have three more bargaining chips on his side.

The Halifax 2014 bid has three new corporate sponsors backing the city’s bid to win the rights to host the Commonwealth Games.

The Daily News and parent company Transcontinental Media are the second “Founding Partner” supporting Halifax’s bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Transcontinental’s support is valued at $500,000.

In November, Keith’s Brewery became the first “Founding Partner” of the Games bid when it pledged to donate to the bid $1 from every case of beer sold in the province up to $500,000.

Law firm McInnis Cooper and RCR Hospitality Group each pledged $50,000 to the Games bid.

Fred MacGillivray, president and chairman of the Halifax 2014 bid committee, said winning corporate support for the Games is a key element of the bid.

‘Great messages’

“It sends great messages to our three levels of government partners — the corporate community is also very interested in this, as well as the general public,” he said.

Winning over the latest corporate sponsors could pave the way for more interest from the business community.

The bid to win the Games will cost $14.3 million, more than 30 per cent paid for by business sponsors.

“When we have support like this, it’s a huge asset,” said MacGillivray.

The international Commonwealth Games Federation has no rules about the level of corporate support in the bidding process.

Daily News publisher Jamie Thomson said the Games represent great things for HRM.

“Winning the rights to the Games could be one of the most exciting opportunities we’ve ever had,” he said.

RCR vice-president Elizabeth ****** said winning the right to host the Games will put Halifax in a new world arena.

“The legacy of these Games will be forever,” she said.

The Games have been projected to cost $785 million to build sports facilities and housing. But Games officials warned last week that figure could change as more detail is worked into the final bid.

The bid committee wants to construct facilities, including an athletes’ village, on land in the former military-housing area called Shannon Park in Dartmouth.

Halifax is competing against Abuja, Nigeria, and Glasgow, Scotland, for the rights to host the 2014 Games.

The decision will be made in Sri Lanka on Nov. 9.

Wow empressive . Yes the commitment once again has gotten 500,000 dollar worth of goods in kind. Half a million dollars is nothing compared to having one of the most power men in the sport administration world behind you like Sepp Blatter. Abuja is gaining the upper hand as if they had not back in 2005 at the commonwealth nations annual conference in Malta which our former prime minister was a no show. It turns out however the president of nigeria was there and took every opportunity to lobby commonwalth states to support Abuja's bid. Gee I wonder how many times it was mentioned that Africa as a continent had never hosted and that Canada had hosted 4 times , Great Britian 6 , new zelanad 3 and australia 4 times.

Yes a 500,000 dollar commitment that again will most likely not be cashed in because the bid will be unsuccessful if not shortlisted LOL.

Well, jim jones, Alberta may be "debt free", but don't say that to some Albertans who had to use the provincial health care system lately. It is at the point where people could be living in "third world conditions", if they do become sick because of not enough beds and health care staff. In fact, the infamous "blow up" of the former Calgary General Hospital that was being played yesterday by the local news seems to be the highlights of that day. Back then, the "friends of Medicare" had a field day and did predict that the Tory government will pay heavily for that "red-neck act." This could be one of the big downsides of the Klein government, as some people have mentioned here in the past. When I used to live in NYC, the saying about health care goes like this: "We have the best health care system in the world, just as long as we don't get sick." Alberta's current scenario could be heading that way, too, because of the general and major cutbacks of the 1990s and, one has to admit this to a degree, that public health care funding is not really "a size fits all solution." I should find out more information about this, but the "best health care systems in the world" according to the UN has pointed out that Canada's HC system is not as great as it claims to be. In fact, some third-world countries are ranked even higher than Canada and some of them don't have nearly as much resources as such. Of course, these kind of statistics will always in dispute. And, Ralph Klein did have a point about "out of control provincial health expenses."

As for trying to lure Maritime workers back home by using their various common ideas made by the 4 premiers, my local news have commented about how some of them could be heading back with Alberta cash, but I know personally of a lot of them that would rather stay in Alberta, despite the high costs of living in the province. That is most especially so in the Calgary and surrounding areas, where I know of a couple them that got promotions "very quickly" after getting hired by the various companies. Of course, there will always be those who want to go back to their roots when the opportunity is right, but it seems that they are torn between that and having the freedom to make money by working in Alberta.

The thing is people do come back usually at retirement. I think what keeps people in alberta besides the money is core fiscal responsibility that the province shows in regards to what it spends and how it spends. Lurking maritimers back is a joke to be very honest. Lurking them back to make half as much and be taxed to death for a commonwealth games or other airy fairy ideas is really a problem . People especially in Halifax get this idea that all these distractions surrounding things people dont need is a sure fire way to economic salvation. It is the opposite. Years ago it was the mad rush to put up movie studios. well that industry is short lived and people grew tried of the novelity and started to do what people naturally do to a brand news cash cow . They butchered it. The Actra strike could easily kill that business as the screen writers guild strike in the states had a gold rush in the summer of 2001 for canada. The biggest sector for employment now outside government in nova scotia is now retail and working at wal mart, tim hortons or sobeys make for a person who can pay a mortgage of any size and the taxes that go along with property ownership. When you lose skilled workers to a mammouth project like the tar sands in fort mc money it is hard to get that back .

"Fort McMoney" is the most direct description you can get in this regard. It is unknown what will happen there with both the interim of new federal income trust rules and the world overall crude oil market for this year, but the direct investments from domestic and international parties to the oil sands alone could literally wipe out all the provincial deficits and debts of the 4 combined Maritime provinces easily. I mean, the last few years gave the province so much potential investment there that it overshadowed some sectors of the Alberta economy. Of course, with the environment issue coming back into the political fold, it might scare away some of those investors.

In any case, I will have to look at the local news tonight for more news from the meeting between the 4 premiers and Ed Stelmach. Kind of funny in a way in that I do not recall them doing this, when Klein was in power. I think they wanted to see how Stelmach will react to their ideas, since he is an unknown to them.

The increase of maritimers going to fort mc money and other places in alberta gone from 1 foot waves on the ocean to a wave rivaling a tsunami. That is why they are out there because it is going to effect tax revenues here. Considering what is going on in the annaplois valley with both the poultry and hog industries I can see that part of the province becoming depopulated. The Apple Industry was fairly big argi business there and the farmers are not even bothering to get pickers , then cant even get mexican migrant workers it is that bad.

The income trust thing is not slowing down development in the tar sands. The only thing that would slow it is 30 dollar a barrell oil and that will never happen again with china and india in the energy demand formula . There is just not enough oil and gas excluding expensive sources like the tar sands to keep up with chinese growth in demand which is probably double digit percentages of growth in demand.

thn you have the united states running to nearly the end of the north slope of alaska in the coming decades with the demand in america increasing.

Oil Stocks bought in 2000 at the low would be very sweet for debit ends and profits.

Told you so: AG's office

Tory government was warned years ago about user fees

By AMY SMITH Provincial Reporter

The Nova Scotia government was warned six years ago that it could be taken to court over user fees.

In 2001, then-auditor general Roy Salmon said it appeared a court challenge of the user fees could be successful because the fees aren't legislated.

At that time, Alan Horgan, then-senior audit director, said in most cases, the province didn't know the full cost of its services and, as a result, might not be able to prove there was a foundation for the fees it was charging.

"The problem is, if they are challenged on a fee, and this fee is not set by legislation, the government may be called to show that the fee is reasonable," Mr. Horgan testified before the legislature's public accounts committee in 2001. He is now the assistant auditor general.

The auditor general's 2000 report, released in March 2001, said the level of fees must meet the cost of providing the service or it could be classified as a tax.

I find it confusing when unethical people like Michel Samson call unethical people like Micheel Baker out....anyway I think until these paybacks for liquor establishments are legally settled and paid the bid should be suspended. The province owes too much money out to those wrongfully 'taxes/levied/charged'.....

Do we have a list of names of the CG bid team in HRM?

Also, sorry no link, heard yesterday that this BIDTEAM is still REFUSING to make the budget public and this making NS people and some politicians angry....Now how much more needs to take place for the FEDERATION to pay attention to the dysfunction from HRM?

Clearly the bid was not submitted REPESENTING the majority of Nova Scotians. People have a right to know where their money is going. I must have slept through the referedum for the GAMES being hosted here........again government should always be transparent if not then suspect something illegal and unethical.....the news said the BIDTEAM says they willnot disclose the budget as not to give the opposition an unfair advantage....well when you pick yourself up from the floor laughing.....unfair advantage...my gosh...there are so many advantages... that why stop at a budget issue......

MY gosh they ARE delusional...

Hey wait a minute! Who the heck approved that the BIDTEAM could go to any CW countries ..who approved that budget that we do not have?

My gosh this is beyond offensive!

All this money to beg others to come to our party??.....

HAVE SOME SHAME ABOUT YOURSELF!

If HRM was all that then it would speak for itself...the fact that the HRM BIDTEAM must now go grovel.....my gosh I am ashamed to be in NOVA SCOTIA right now...so ashamed..... who should I send my therapist bill to? the BIDTEAM???

FEDERATION : you are out of control letting any bidders misspend money to grovel...that should not be allowed.......You are in comtempt FEDERATION!

To date and I am sure I am missing some things:

the FEDERATION does not mind:

-rapists in council

-rogue sociopathic police departments

-dangerous cities

-corrupt and unethical provincial government

-a fabricated budget

-no public confidence on bid

-misspending of public money to grovel

Hey, Outraged. My local news yesterday showed some "Come to Nova Scotia" billboards, when the Saskatchewan premier and his entourage came to Calgary to promote the idea of wooing the city's businesses and, no surprise, workers who may be "fed up with the big city experience" to set up shop in his province. Their billboards are right beside the Nova Scotia one in downtown. Earlier, your NS premier joined in that other trip to Alberta, with 3 other Maritime premiers, to say about the same thing. You know, this could get ugly.

-misspending of public money to grovel

The bid team for Halifax is a seperate private non profit society that I personally hope travels to every commonwealth country making a big collective ass of themselves in the process. Actually trying to explain to the minister of sport of trinidad and tobago how a country like Canada with an annual GDP per capita over 35,000 dollars or over double the Annual Per capita GDP of T&T (16,800 us dollars ) is sending a crew from a little regional city without the stadium Port of Spain has. Halifax does not have a Hasely Crawford stadium of 25000 and brand new as of 2001 and has not hosted Fifa U 17 match like port of spain a city of 265,000 people.

The committee will further embrass itself in Kingston, Jamiaca , Georgetown Guyanna, Bridgetown Barbados, Saint Johns Antigua, Basseterre Saint Kitts (which I have been to personally) Saint Georges Grenada and Castries Saint Lucia when they try to convince these places with Brand new Cricket stadiums for the 2007 cricket world cup that they should vote against their black brothers in africa for a place without a stadium in a small regional centre of the martimes province of canada. The absence of a stadium in halifax in light that these carribbean nations atleast have that or two stadiums on these islands of fewer people then the city of halifax raise confidence in the hlaifa bid ROTFLMAO.

Jim, thanks for that info....though quite confusing that they call themselves non-profit...and yes now that you put it that way they will make a buttocks of themselves....but who is funding them? all private donations? do I smell an audit coming on..wishful thinking perhaps..

Yes Jim all the countries should shake their heads at the sheer nerve of HRM thinking to play in the big leagues.....I think the realism of racial politics in HRM will finally be outed to the greater masses......they have no clue and to have no clue places HRM at a great disadvantage....and may I add though not trying to be offensive to those less fortunate.....HRM powers that be reek of that mentality of those never outside of the province....I hope this will slap them in the face AND kick them in the buttocks.

we should do T-shirts ...

Please feel sorry for me I live in HRM :(

I will buy 3......

Ugly is right, Outraged. It seems that there is quite a bit of regional jealousy and envy going around in Canada. Most of it aimed at the western half of the country in general, but more squarely at Alberta. I mean, I do not recall whatsoever that Alberta's former premier, Ralph Klein, had any of these such meetings before. Now that he's gone and Ed Stelmach is the new premier, they all are clamouring for his attention. Hmm.... <_<

And, to make things interesting, the CBC has an article out stating that Halifax will host the 2011 Canada Winter Games. Ok, that is just small fry to what the city is trying to get now, but I'll put the link here so that you can see it for yourself.

G, thanks for posting that link. I had that link and lost it posting the slew of news articles on the other thread, I should have started a new thread for just related news articles on why HRM should be disqualified... ....maybe this is a good omen in that HRM has been thrown a bone to shut them up as they will not get the CWG bids....I hope so I hope so...LOL

See when HRM is BANKRUPT from winter games, it cannot justify the bid for CWG...The moderator felt my news articles of poverty and abuse and corruption and unethical govt practices of NS was off topic.....

I have no issue with friendly competition amongst equals...however there is nothing friendly about what is going on..in fact it is down right disturbing...like a bunch of silly willies in a cat fight....tsk tsk.....

It was going to the province anyway, and Halifax's competition was Truro and Antigonish. Gee, I wonder who was going to win this one  . It's hardly a bone to shut us up. The province of Nova Scotia was chosen before this CWG stuff ever became a debate.

What a bunch of B.S...bankrupt from the Canada games are you for really! don't make me laugh.

This can only help in the CWG's bid and make are prospects of winning stronger. You're really grasping at straws aren't you. Pretty sad!

What will you do when Halifax wins the bid outraged ? what will you do?

Gee I would agree with you on the first point that the Canada games would hardly bankrupt the province or city but the second point WILL

that Halifax would be helped by winning the bid for the Canada games is absolutely False.

Halifax Losing the Canada games bid would end the commonwealth games bid and the Antigonish- Port Hawkesbury bid was very good. Two of the newest arenas in the province with three ice surfaces built in the 2000s, a brand new set of dorms on the campus of STFX and a ski hill at Kepoch that has the elevation of martock but much closer to the games village in Antigonish then downtown Halifax is to Martock. Truro probably lost for the very reason Halifax will lose the CWGs bid. Lack of the Main Venue ,a modern ice hockey rink,in the case of a Canada Winter Games. A case of Political interference is certainly at play in the awarding just like it was with Halifax winning the domestic bid for the CWG's. Political influence Halifax and Canada does not have in regards to the November 2007 CWG meeting in Sri Lanka. Any influence Canada had went up in smoke with Paul Martin Standing up the 2005 Heads of Commonwealth Nations conference in Malta. The Australians certainly have grounds to not vote for Canada because Canada was the last holdout to sign a broadcast deal with the Melbourne 2006 committee which is rumored to have been the committee paying the CBC to broadcast a one hour high light show during the Melbourne games to keep up the sponsorship promises to companies like Microsoft and Cadbury Scwhepps of TV coverage across the commonwealth. having a blackout of CWGs in 2006 in Canada would have effected the sponsorship deals as Canada is one of the few major consumer markets in the commonwealth.

And Where is the Field house for the Canada Games Located???

In the Clayton Park area outside the Halifax Commonwealth Games bid area for venues. Why are you pro-games people not building that facility in Shannon Park and using the Canada games field house for the commonwealth games bid??? The reason is very simple the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing and does not wish to share resources towards their collective goals. That has always been a problem in the HRM forever and shows the inept thinking surrounding the HRM and province house.

With Scott Logan's salary now in the open as twice the amount of the one man school board Howard Windsor in Halifax the general thought that these games are far from sensible in approach grows . Howard Windsor will handle more in a HRM education Budget then the 14 million dollars the commonwealth games bid is worth and the bid budget is twice as much as Hamilton 2010 which is mind blowing. These glaring facts show that we are in for a giant surprize if we were to be unfortunate to actually be awarded the CWGs.

So WILL ,AKA Yes Halifax, Bruce Devenne has told me you still haven't accepted the invitation by rick howe to debate the commonwealth games on the rick howe show on Tuesday. Whats the problem the committee WILL not let you come out to play???

If you are so in favor of these games you would have automatically said yes to Rick Howe but hey I understand you are afraid of the CJCH Hotline person of the year Bruce Devenne LOL. I have to wonder why you were not nominated After all you are the big deal business guy aren't you who graces the show with pro-games propaganda , based in airy fairy concepts to try to snow the public which has been the same tactic for generations pro-sports festivals elements use. Your on the Rick Howe show with the commonwealth games fairy tails as Devenne is on the line with actual facts LOL. That is why Devenne gets voted by overwhelming numbers the CJCH hotline person of the year over Gloria Mac Cluskey, Fred Mac Gillirvay , and Premier Rodney Mac Donald.

WILL do you have to get permission from your handlers the Halifax commonwealth games bid committee???? And Why does Rick have to ask a bum boy to represent the pro games side? Scott Logan and company know that the truth is on the anti-games side backed up by history??? The Committee is Chicken not only

with the Rick Howe show and debating against Anti-games people there but also in other HRM bodies that have requested committee representatives to debate Devenne and company. They know their possible arguements don't hold water against decades of documented third party historic facts.

Yes I can hear it now WILL , Rick and Bruce playing the modern version of the Three Stooges . You know WILL would be Curley the stooge that will be constantly wacked in the head with hammer of historical fact from Moe , played by Bruce Devenne , the stooge who wacked Larry and Curley constantly ROTFLMAO.

IF you really want the games why didn't you buy some of David Hensbee's bonds he wants to issue to pay for the games? I hear they are going like hotcakes like the scratch tickets and the special addition keith's beer ROTFLMAO @ WILL.

Wishblade. I was going to post that very thing.....your first two sentences....it reminds me of how PETER KELLY got re-elected....no one really 'knew' the other people (venues)....so we pick the devil we know. Heck even I voted for PK ..I didnot know 2 guys and VS is not my choice for equal representation....unless you have a drinking problem...

I can assure you just because it was not on papers does not mean it is not being discussed....it is bone... have no doubt...

HRM winning the winter bid over TRURO and ANTIGONISH is akin to bringing a gun to a knife fight.
